  Diabetic dog

  my daughter's 7 year old miniature pinscher is a newly diagnosed diabetic.

  she and her husband (they are young newlyweds) were having a rough time trying to care for her, so the dog is now living with me while i try to get her regulated.

  does anyone else here have an insulin dependant pet?

  I just don't have time or inclination to cook special for this little doggie. We have 4 cats and another dog; I work full time AND take care of my disabled husband and my elderly parents, so I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible. Our plan is to allow 'free feeding' of dry food only, and go with her twice a day blood glucose checks to figure out her insulin needs. She doesn't mind the blood testing at all--at least the GOOD GIRL and a tidbit worked for that much.

  Top Hat--she does have early cataracts. Isn't it amazing how animals adapt?

  Alphabeta--I can fully understand needing help with the shots! I had to buy a muzzle. After putting that on, I wrap her in an afghan and practically lie on top of her on the couch to get the shot done. It's crazy, since she lets me check her sugar by pricking the edge of her upper lip!

  As an aside--I am also worried about my 1 year old cat, who broke off a tooth that got infected. Had to have SURGERY last week for the abscess, and it opened up over the weekend, exposing bone. And now my 87 year old mother with the broken shoulders has vomiting and diarrhea!!!!!! I hate to be a wimp, but I'm getting a little overloaded here.

  Frankly, I'm not convinced it is in the dog's best interest, either. I have not committed to doing this indefinitely. Hopefully I can get her blood sugars down and get her a little healthier. She fights the injections so bad; you'd think I was killing her. Other than that 15 seconds twice a day, she seems pretty happy.

  Apparently Miniature Pinschers are prone to diabetes. She was VERY obese (also a risk factor) and she started losing weight, drinking a LOT of water, and urinating huge volumes every few minutes. She even wet herself in her sleep. She is 7 years old.

  A dog's normal blood glucose is 60-110 (like a human). Hers was 585 the first time it was checked. They take NPH insulin (just like some humans). Rather than running back and forth to the vet, I've been using a glucometer at home and phoning in the results and we adjust her dose. It's just really hard to balance diet/exercise/insulin.

  If we do decide to put her down, at least we will know we tried. I just had my 18 year old cat put to sleep two weeks ago. It's a hard thing to do, but sometimes necessary.

  the hospitalist was giving me and my family the run around, not there, not telling us much; so, i fired him.

  Hugs to you, sweety! It's so hard to go through a final illness with someone you love. I hope you and your mom have a decent weekend and that you are all at peace.

  Ambien...Can anyone help?????

  i have a close family member who has been taking ambien for quite some time now, and is trying to get off of it.

  this person is having a tough time, not to mention they cannot sleep at all.

  does anyone have any tips on how to get and stay off, and what to do for sleep in the meantime???

  Ah, Ambien...I have had a lifelong problem with sleeping, and Ambien is the best sleeper I've found. Lunesta left me with a terrible taste in my mouth. But for me, Ambien works great except it wears off early (2 a.m.), and then I'm tempted to take more in the night. Then I could run out too early in the month and not be able to refill my rx.

  I avoid this by taking 1/2 at bedtime and saving back the other half to take if I am awake in the night for any length of time, but no later than 2. (This is with my doctor's full knowledge and approval). He hates for me to be dependant on something for sleep, too, but appreciates that I have to sleep sometime! I have tried lots of herbals and diet changes prior to this regimen. I also tried the Ambien CR formula, but was unimpressed by any difference.

  However, I am wide awake tonight as I am on Mom's couch. She fell and broke her other shoulder so I stay here every other night to help her to the bathroom. That way my dad can take HIS ambien and sleep, and neither one of us go too many nights in a row without!

  i don't know where to begin to say what is all bottled up inside me.

  i may need to be on another forum, but i have come to respect the posts and input of so many here, and trust.....so it may be jumbled, and may take starting a few topics to fully get it out.. i have already posted about my youngest brother committing suicide.

  i have another brother also.. my mother divorced my father i am guessing when i was five or six.

  Wow, Purps, that is a load to carry. To find out what you thought was true all your life is a lie is soul-shaking for everyone. I hope your brother is getting good counsel, including dealing with alcohol. With that strong a family history of suicide, it seems dangerous to add alcohol to the mix, but self-medication is so common. And then your mom playing the role of the admirable pioneer must really push his buttons--any yours. I have no profound advise, but much empathy for the roller coaster insanity of a family with skeletons. Hang in there, and just be glad that your life (and your kids) won't have this trauma. As I am so fond of saying, it stops with our generation. HUGS!

  Funny, my first answer that came to mind was TALLER (I'm 5 ft) and skinnier (I'm #150). Then reading other's answers got me thinking of deeper, more altruistic improvements--ability to heal on touch, wisdom to always say the 'right' thing, maybe a way to peek into the future( i.e. if I make this decision, the results will be...)

  How about a way to have a 'buzz' without any chemical, and turn it on and off at will?

  But TALL and THIN .... WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  I got a cool parallel bible at 'Christian Book Distributors'. It's got King James, NIV, Living, and American Standard all in columns so you can read the scripture from all these sources. 'The Message' is fun to read (It is a paraphrased bible with idioms common in the US) My very first non-witness bible was NIV. (New International Version)

  Special Assembly 2-Day 2,000 delegates and TWO baptisms!

  just got back from the special one day assembly and had to share this important info.

  only two baptisms today; two girls about 15-16 out of 2,000 attendees.. i stumbled more than two with my anti-witnessing.

  i posted un expose material in the bathrooms along with pre and post nov 1995 1914 generation belief.. incidentally, attendance was down almost 25% over last year as well.
