I don't think that you need to get into the 'cult' conversation at this point - if ever. *Maybe* when they are in their teens and you can talk about some other 'high-control-group' type religion. I would avoid the word 'cult' if you still have relatives 'in'.
Regarding the why question. Saying that work is more important than god might be teaching wrong priorities.
I think a better approach may be to do like nugget (and others in various JWN threads) suggested. Tell them that after careful thought and prayer, you are feeling uncomfortable with some things that are being done or taught. You think that maybe you were wrong to not celebrate the gift of life - and the gift of your children - so now you want to celebrate things like birthdays because you are so happy. You also want to spend more time appreciating nature, other people, etc.
Admitting you were wrong and have now made a change, is a powerful example to your kids.
I'm missing a key idea that someone else in your position had a few years ago. Hopefully others will give some more insight and suggestions.
If she is missing a few friends, maybe encourage her to contact them. (Might not work if you are fading, as 6-year-olds are likely to blurt out things that you'd rather keep quiet - and you don't want her to have to censor herself too carefully.) Also, I fully agree with Blondie - help her keep making new friends and learning new skills and exploring new talents. Maybe do a little of this before contacting the JW friends.
Good job!

According to Wikipedia - let the reader use discernment -
Bloodless surgery is a term that was popularized at the beginning of the 20th century by the practice of an internationally famous orthopedic surgeon, Adolf Lorenz, who was known as "the bloodless surgeon of Vienna."
The above wiki quote references early 1900's as the time period of innovation in 'bloodless' surgery, however, it wasn't until the 1950's or 1960's that the witnesses made their stand against blood.
So who really was the 'pioneer' here.
Also, while the Jehovah's Witnesses may have advanced the cause, they are not the pioneers as it's doubtful that they did the actual scientific research. They took a stand, and humanitarian physician scientists took up the cause to find an effective way to treat the challenging patient.
The physicians who took on the challenge are the ones who pioneered the practice.

Oh, by the way...
Sab wrote: designed in such a way that would incite an emotional response
I would say that in most cases, the act of shopping for a casket in and of itself is an *emotional experience* that would elicit an emotional response - no matter what the casket looks like or where it is located.

Not unethical at all. It would be unethical if the highest priced product was made of cheap materials.
The placement and presentation of the 3 similar products of varying quality and price is all a part of sales and marketing.
Very common technique.
Some people actually *do* want the cheapest available - no matter what.
Others want the most elaborate, expensive - no matter what.
I think most settle for the middle-of-the road - and like to see what details the alternatives present.

Because the editor, despite those reported "millions" of hours of preaching over the past 130 years, still doesn't know who JWs are. Or doesn't think his readers do. This is yet another example of how small a dent dubs have made in the grand scheme of things.
I don't think that's the reason. People do know that it's mostly Jehovah's Witnesses who knock on doors. It seems that it was actually *in* the original article. Also, it was mentioned on the air and also was the *only* story that they used to promo the news during the preceeding show. It looked like it was intended to be the lead story on the 11:00 news until there was a hit-and-run on a motorcycle cop.
I'm thinking someone asked him to edit it out of the summary article.
Maybe local elders - not wanting to lose momentum for the 'Special Month of Activity'??
