I don't know if you are interested in a 'easier' subject, but you might consider something with your kids.
Either involve them in the 'experiment', or use them as the object.
Perhaps hypothesize about an outcome if you changed something in the way you interact with them and guess what their response/behavior will be. (I'd make it a positive change - LOL) It might be fun for all of you. (ie: Would they be more willing to try new foods if they themselves participated in cooking?)
The religion thing might be a bit too heavy with everything else you have going on right now...???
It's just a thought.
I involved kids a few times in my school projects. The kids remember them and we had alot of fun together.

Hi FreedomFrog -
Cool!! I'm glad you're taking classes. I need to get my butt back into a classroom...
I think you need to be clearer on what the objective of the essay is.
www.dictionary.com defines hypothesis as:
- A tentative explanation for an observation, phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested by further investigation.
- Something taken to be true for the purpose of argument or investigation; an assumption.
- The antecedent of a conditional statement.
Typically what happens is that you make a preliminary guess about an outcome. In High School this was usually done in science lab. Before doing experiments we would write a paper detailing what we THOUGHT would happen based on the details we already knew. (Scientific Method: A procedure used by scientists to test hypotheses by making predictions about the outcome of an experiment before the experiment is performed. The results provide support or refutation of the hypothesis. [definition from biochem.northwestern.edu]) Sooo... After you are clear on the formula they want you to use in our essay, you might find that the controlling religion scenario would work. You could take the position of an outsider (householder) who thinks that JWs (or other) are just nice, loving devout people....
Then again, maybe *I* don't really know just what it is that you are supposed to do...!!
Let us know more as you start outlining your Hypothesis.

The formatting is messed up... The quote from dictionary.com only had 3 definitions. When I put in quotes, it changed the numbering from 1.2.3. to 2.3.4. Sorry for confusion...
i was just wondering what constitutes as being brought up in the truth.
my mom was baptized when i was 7 and my dad got dunked when i was 11. right now i don't really consider myself as being fully raised in the truth because even though i've been going to meetings since i was 6 i just slept/doodled through them.
my mom didn't study with us kids and my dad didn't start the family study until i was 12. i'm turning 20 in a few weeks... i've known life before the truth and it was much bettter, everyone was soo much happier.
... and what serendipity said. She's wiser than me.

How about a compromise? You were partly raised in 'the truth'.
Does it really matter? It was their decision. You were just dragged along for the ride.
I wish I had waited until I was 20 before getting baptized. If I had waited, I don't think I would have done it. Congratulations!
This sounds totally creepy:
..and he keeps going on about how fornication is at first soo enjoyable b/c god made us to enjoy sex and on and on about it..i think he thinks i've done somthing..but i havent!! i felt so sick and uneasy because who talks to a 19 year old girl like this??? alone in a car
OMG!! How insane is that? How can you possibly concentrate on the ministry while having this sort of a conversation with that man? (It would be weird enough if it was a girlfriend or older 'sister'.)
Keep your distance. Get an education.

the reverend down the street has made friends with my son ...... yesterday we came down hard on our 18 yr old son because he has not gotten a job since graduation , and can not pay for his share of the cell phone or car insurance .
so we took these privileges away until he can pay .
well he must of went over to the rev's last night and the guy offered to give him $100.
As soon as my daughter turned 18 I told her to go to bartending school.
I've heard this from a few people and think it's a really good idea.
Trouble is, in many states, the legal drinking age is 21.
Still a great idea, though. A really good, versatile fall-back option.

I didn't read that you were too poor to pay for your son's cell phone and car insurance. My assumption was that you are trying to teach your son financial responsibility.
Someone offering to give him - or advance him - the money, is disrespecting your role as a parent.
Simply working odd jobs for the priest - I would think that would be your son's call. Good experience for him. And *if* the priest pulls any shenanigans, your son will handle it as best he can. And learn something in the process. (Of course, you can always pop in on him unannounced, too.)
Working for the band? What a blast!! I think it's important to give kids an opportunity to spread their wings and if they fall, have a nice warm place for them to come home and heal a little before heading out again. He's only just 18. Gotta live a little. I like the comment from the poster who said he could work with band, be poor AND get an education. No real reason not to try to get some college under his belt.
The comment about 'temp agencies being just for secretarial work'. HMMMM... Well, they are not just for that. And, besides, why couldn't he spend a few days answering phones for a busy company? Surely that's not just women's work. Is it?
Back to your first comment about taking his cell phone and access to the car because he doesn't have the money. BIG Kudos to you. It's really hard to teach kids how to save and budget. I had a very tearful discussion about this with a 22 year old who hadn't learned yet. If he wants to be poor, that's his decision. But to expect other people to subsidize his 'luxuries' is wrong. It doesn't take too awfully much to earn $400 per month (about $300 after taxes). [I'm figuring that a cell phone and insurance and gas would come to about $300 a month for an 18-year-old.] But it does take self-control to budget that money to cover all necessary expenses and even save some so he can still pay his bills when he's not working. Better to learn this lesson now when real necessary expenses are relatively small.
Good luck to both of you. I really hope he has a blast with the band!

ok, seriously people, can anyone here say they honestly enjoy las vegas?
what an utterly depressing place.
my wife and i went there for a "wedding".
I've been a few times (and to other gambling destinations) and generally feel the same way - the place starts to close in on me after a few days.
However, the last time I went to Vegas was 2 years ago. It was a bonus for special achievement at work. We stayed at a decent hotel and ate at wonderful restaurants. Also saw one of the headliner shows. And we were each given $500 in spending cash.
I think it made a big difference that there were so many varied activities.
Prior to the work trip, I had mostly just ate, drank and gambled. All the lights and bells just get to be too much after 2.75 days (as someone else posted).
Also, it's not so cheap anymore. Even meals are expensive.
Still an easy-to-get-to destination for most people, with a little something for almost everyone.

I was going to post that Phil Volk is/was a witness (he attended my parents congregation). Phil was a member of the 70's group 'Paul Revere and the Raiders'. In the group, his nickname was "Fang".
I didn't know he was connected to the famous Nelson Family.
