Valis,
I noticed that you (unlike myself) made the appropriate serious comment to Alan's thread, then you blew it!!!!!!!!!

we ex-jws know very well how much the watchtower society put us under pressure to believe that "armageddon is just around the corner".
they've been doing it in one form or another ever since charles taze russell began publishing his nonsense.
in 1877 he advocated that true christians should believe that christ would "take them home" in 1878. when that didn't happen he moved the event up to 1881. after that he focused on 1914.. the society is still doing pretty much the same thing, building up expectations and then revising them, decade after decade.

i was just sitting here going over my finances and, if murphy's law doesn't come into play.. when i first started this cleaning service, i thought i would never get it built up, and a few times thought i would end up losing my home.
my mom, has on a few occasions, asked me to move to mn to live with her, because she knew my situation.
however, i was determined that i was going to make it on my own.

Dave!!
I was almost ready to start a thread DAVE WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE! So are you dead or alive?
Seriously I was starting to worry that you had run off with Miss Oregon or Miss Deep Rouge River. But I see you are well and as sassy as ever. Good.
Although I wish you would leave your buddy alone. Alan has been offering some pretty good stuff of late. And you know how many year's I tried to ignore the guy (what a lier Iam).
Oh shite I just had to tell you that your big sappy ass is missed around here.

Lilacs,
*** I hope that verse in the bible about "pride going before a fall" doesn't come true, because i'm proud of myself. I stuck to my guns and finally, it's paying off.***
Somehow I think the above proverb has little to do with your pride in a job well done. In fact Iam positive there are many other's that suggest pride in one's accomplishments.
Yipeeee girl! Since all the odds indicate that 3 out of 5 new business fails with in 5 yrs. You are well on your way to beating the trend.
Proud of you.

the following was written by professor johseph d. wilson, d. d., and is about the prophecies and criticism of the book of daniel.
it was published in the four volume book series called "the fundamentals.".
modern objections to the book of daniel were started by german scholars who were prejudiced against the supernatural.
Farkel,
Somehow I had missed this lesson on Daniel 8.
I had to read this comment twice;
***Then, along comes the THEOCRATIC Watchtower Printing Company(tm) and everything falls into place! The major prophet Ezekiel pictured THEM. Isaiah pictured THEM. Jeremiah pictured THEM. Elijah pictured THEM. Elisha pictured THEM. Ruth pictured THEM. Naomi pictured THEM. John the Revelator pictured THEM. The ark that allegedly preserved the human race pictured THEM. Jesus' parables pointed to THEM. Major portions of the Revelation pointed to THEM. The seven mighty trumpet blasts in Revelation pointed to THEM and their puny little gatherings in the 1920's (which no one except themselves cared the least bit about). And on it goes. Here we have a book thousands of years old which everywhere within its pages supposedly "prophesied" about the leaders of a totally insignificant religion that can't get ANY prophecy of its own right, gets into tax trouble, abuses its membership on a daily basis, and hates everyone but themselves, including the governments that have protected and ensured that freedom to hate.***
Although your entire lesson was delightful ( and required a no-dozeto complete), the above statement should be PLASTERED up on the refrigerator of every active jw world wide. They must read this tome at least twice a day, then recite verbatum via phone to you personaly, so that you can verify that thier brain cells got the message.

this is bad.
soooo bad.. .
when i was kid, growing up outside seattle, i had the responsibility of taking care of the family yard.
D8,
While pioneering in Georgia in the late 60's I approached a little cabin sort of in the woods, a huge german shepherd burst out the front door and clamped his jaws on my leg, I used my book bag to beat him off.
The householder came out and saw my leg bleeding through my light gray suit. He looked me square in the eye and asked 'do ya want me to shoot this dog'? I told him that I was ok, and no I didn't want him to shoot the dog, but would he mind if I read Rev 21: 3 and 4 to him.
I should have said yeah shoot the damn dog!

this isn't about the running of silentlambs.org.
this is about the people themselves who have been abused.
this is from someone who has never suffered from abuse, who is trying to understand the needs of those who have.. how can those who have not been abused help those of us here who have, and what can we do that would be really useful to those persons?.
Cassi,
*** I have never been cussed out in so many e-mails. Wait! Perhaps I was able to convey a small point about keeping name calling, "cussing out" and all out nastyness in private e-mail?***
So sorry you had to receive nasty emails, regarding your views. Perhaps that is why so many here lock the link? Yes perhaps you did convey the point to keep the nastiness off the board.
First let me acknowledge that I understood your intent, in fact I thought the post was a very good attempt at trying to be fair. 'Ballsy' a word that can be applied to BB no doubt.
When does being fair, tolerant, actually become enabling, to the offender? When does making excuses for abhorent behaviour, further entice reckless repition of bad conduct?
How much damage can an individual do to other's reputations, career's, before the 'light bulb' fires? Must EVERYONE who supports BB go through what Rev Malk experienced, before having thier eye's opened? It really amuses me to hear so many suggest taking things private, as if to say, hey this is to dirty for public consumption, let's cover it up, present a unified front. Bah humbug.
I suppose when SL and company made unsubstantiated accusations against a GB member, that didn't qualify for handling in private? What is with this double standard?
We may be a community of survivor's, but I for one, do not see us as some unified organization of jwcom'ers with some sort of mandate. Maybe you do, and that's ok. Those who want to organize and form a BOD more power to them.
I see all of this unfolding in the wide open arena of public view as big positive. Any jw lurker who has watched this whole nasy affair unfold, should at the very least..........give us credit. We as former jw's, just don't roll over and accept any method, any personality, based solely on 'righteousness' of the cause. Instead of making each other feel like outcasts for dissenting, we should be applauding the HS's, Rev Malk's, TH's, IW's, and other's who have stood up to the majority/cheerleader's from the very start. Well it took the good Rev a little while to see the light.
I don't ever want to be viewed by my jw daughter's or other still imprisoned relatives, as not applying the same standards or critique to our issues and various personalities, as we so vehemiently point out the error and ruthlessness of thier organization. Fair is fair, no matter who is involved.
Anyway Cassi, I appreciate your response, and thank you for the opportunity to have my say.
Danny
no - i'm not talking about the pantomime character.
i'm talking about my beliefs.. i really envy those of you who say "there is no god" or "there is a god" because at least you have a belief one way or the other.
some say they believe in the trinity, others say it is rubbish, some say when we die we go to heaven, others say we go to the grave, others say there is no resurrection hope.
Rebel,
Perhaps in comparison to the judgemental, dogmatic, rantings of the WTBS, and other fundementalists, your being 'wishy-washy' is in fact the more honest approach.
When faced with the fact that noone can claim ANY absolute truth, as regards the questions you profer, then you tell me who is in a better frame of mind?
Danny
this whole "reform" nonsense is driving me up the wall.. nothing is going to "reform" the wtbts.
nobody is going to "reform" the wtbts.. crying out loud, be realistic about this.
we have a group of men who have at least some faith & belief that what they do is "divinely" approved, and they have 6 million suckers who follow.
LyinEye's said;
***Isnt it intersting, how concerned God is over their little doctrines and can waste His time,,, on all the GB's petty delusions,,,,yet he will not interceed on the sufferings of man as a whole. The whole WT thing is bullcrap.***
If I were God I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of allowing one single prediction, forecast, the slightest fulfillment! Oh wait a minute, it's true, not one single thing they have ever predicted has come true. I think God if he ever was interested in them probably lost interest sometime over a century ago.
'Bullcrap' is very kind of you Lyin.

Alan,
Iam in the process of reading James Penton's 'Appocolype Delayed' (so far a worthwhile read), his research on Russell's early yrs is very revealing.
He (Russell) was barely in his twenties when getting the Watchtower mag off to it's infamous start. The almost comical marital spats with Maria involving who really is the 'faithful and discreet slave', the non-consumation of thier marriage, all paint a picture not very pretty.
What strikes me more than anything, is the atomosphere surronding all of this history. The symbolisim, the mystical 'crystal ball' like way, Russell and other 'adventists' approached the study of the Bible.
I could imagine vividly these 'sincere' students of the Bible, discecting verse by verse, drawing time line charts, using graphics to dramatize, then declaring thier assertions as 'truth revealed'.
In view of the time, it is easy for me to understand why so many fell duped to follow this man. The Bible having a much more significant role in everyday family activity. In the late 1800's the personal Bible being almost the sole 'keeper' of family tree's, and the source of stories for family entertainment. A book much more revered than it is today.
Russell's original 'guess' at the meaning of scripture, set the stage for all the dogma generated by wtbs. Even to this day (as you so aptly made clear above), the wtbs continue to use words and phrasing that he originated, to assure that the reader's, adherents, mind would give UNDUE credence to what was published. The Watchtower has never changed the formula that works.
