K, the day is here. No cravings yet. I've got plenty to keep me busy today too: xmas shopping; house cleaning; helping my mom put up her tree; etc.
Thanks everybody for your encouragement. I'll be checking in here a couple of times today just to keep myself honest.

Quitting smoking (again)
by DanTheMan ini managed to stay off the bloody things for over 2 1/2 yrs but alas i fell off the wagon in september.
my plan is to ramp-down today by only having a cig every two hours or so, then cold turkey tomorrow.
i have a hard time holding myself to 'quit days' when i'm the only one who knows what day it is, hence i'm making it public so that i feel more accountable.

Noni I think i can get by without the patch, I've done it before. So far so good on the ramp-down, the two hour intervals are just right.

Oreos were always my favorite, I could eat a whole package of them in a single sitting. I also used to like to put peanut butter on them, a practice that I had to hide from my autistic brother as it made him very angry, as did mixing Coke with 7-Up.

Purps, yah I don't think I look cool when I smoke (or when I'm doing anything else for that matter!)
Mulan and Noni, I've never tried the patch but I have used Nicorette gum in the past. I just became really addicted to the gum. -

Is Watchtower Leadership Burnt Out and UnMotivated?
by metatron inthere is an expression "phoning it in" and that pretty much sums up the way watchtower leadership looks to me across the past several .
years.
the first clue i got was when they didn't bother to start any witch hunt against obvious 'apostate' problems in the organization.

The WTS tries hard to paint its history as being something other than a series of successive personality cults, but in truth this is all it has ever been. Since Freddie died, there is no larger-than-life personality at the high levels of the org that the r&f ooh and ahh over. Brooklyn is nothing but a faceless, Orwellian "Ministry of Truth".
For most of my JW tenure (1990's), I couldn't even imagine trying to bring somebody else into such a colorless, petrified religion. And it keeps becoming ever more so.

Rebel8, my ramp-down really started yesterday so I'm not going from full-on to zero in one day. I'm sure tomorrow isn't going to be a lot of fun. The nicotine cravings tend to come in waves, and when a wave hits...well if you've been a smoker then you know how strong the urge is and how torturous it is to fight it.
Lisa, I'm not working today so no prob on the two hour intervals.
FD, yep, I've quit smoking a number of times, probably at least 20, seriously. Every time I've been off of them for a while, I get the notion that 'wouldn't it be nice to have just one cigarette' and then I'm hooked again. -

Help him understand that email, craigslist, etc. are just electronic versions of things he is already very familiar with. An email account is like a street address. Craigslist is like the classified section of a newspaper.
In my experience, people who have little or no experience with computers and the internet tend to think of them together as being this strange, incomprehensible other-world that is completely different from the analog world that they're used to, and thus it's very scary to them. If they can be helped to understand that the internet is just like a huge filing cabinet, with all kinds of different folders (websites) and papers (web pages), I would think this would help to calm their fears. -

These days he seems more like Bush Sr. than the brash GWB of 2000. I'm not sure he was ever a true fundy, but it's hard to imagine that the past eight years could have drawn him closer to that. Age and real-world experience mellows all but the most stubbornly self-deluded.
