dumb versus ignorant
by larc inafter a person leaves the religion, they can say "why was i so dumb".
dumb implies a lack of intelligence.
however, there are many witnesses that are very intelligent.

Regardless of what JW will tell you, joining the Watchtower is an emotional decision for most, if not all JW's. Your emotions make you want to believe it, sort of like falling in love.
The intelligent ones spend the rest of their life constructing their thinking to validate the emotional decision that they made. Simple as that.
I think that the intelligent JW's are very narcissistic (OK I'm on a narcissism kick lately and I see it in everything) in that they are too proud and vain to realize that it's all a hoax.

What the hell was I thinking?
by joannadandy inhave any of you ever had a moment your life you replay in your mind?
over and over, and thwack your head against the wall saying "what the hell was i thinking?
" or going along just fine, and then have something remind you of the time you were a total loser--and you blush uncontrollably (for no reason at all the outside world seems to think) and rush for the nearest brick wall to commence with the "what the hell was i thinking" battery?

Joanna, that is a hilarious story. The guy should've worn a ring, you really don't have anything to be embarrassed about.
My book of 'dumbass things I've done' would put yours to shame, guaranteed, don't argue.

Proselytizing is more a passionate search for something not yet found than a desire to bestow upon the world something we already have. It is a search for a final and irrefutable demonstration that our absolute truth is indeed the one and only truth. The proselytizing fanatic strengthens his own faith by converting others. - Eric Hoffer

A question of race
by teejay insince i was a believer from the earliest of my memories, i spent my formative academic years not thinking or caring much about my future.
although 1975 (armageddon / the end of the world / jehovah's judgment) was still a year away, as a naive, dumbass teenager it was looming very large on my radar screen.
besides *that*, my best jw buddy got baptized in february of that year.

Interesting post.
I have a jobby-job too, customer service. Hey, somebody has to answer the phone when Penn State bookstore calls and asks us why we sent them 50 copies of a 7th grade math text instead of the advanced financial accounting book they ordered.
You know, prejudice comes in all shapes and SIZES.
I am white, but I am small for a man, 5'7" and maybe 135 lbs., very slight build. Also, even though I am almost 32 years old, I look quite young, almost boyish.
Sometimes when I get shitty treatment, I feel like, if I was 6'3" 230 lbs. you wouldn't have treated me that way you asshole.
But, I find that the more conscious I am of my small stature, the more sensitive I am to this sort of thing. I am much happier when I forget about my lack of stature, or my mediocre looks. I used to spend much time looking into the mirror, analyzing, criticizing, very narcissistic behavior. Now I avoid looking at reflections of myself except when I'm shaving or something. And I am much more at peace.
Along the same lines, I think the more conscious a black person is of their blackness, the more they are going to see the deck as being stacked against them and every real or imagined slight will have racist underpinnings to them.
Please don't take that to mean that I think racism is in the mind of the beholder. Oh yeah there's some white assholes out there who treat black persons like shit because they're black, no doubt about that.

Welcome to the board! It's nice to know you're not alone, isn't it?
This board can become your life if you let it
Have you read Crisis of Conscience? It's required reading for continued membership on this forum.
I don't know what your situation is, but if I can give you any advice, it would be - don't be to quick to DA or reveal your apostate leanings. Play it cool.

I suppose many thought the great depression and WWII were the end of the world
Oh yeah, Joe Rutherfraud milked WWII for all it was worth.
Good topic. The WT cult made a lot of us into fearful, emotional cripples. One night last summer, a severe thunderstorm rolled through, tornado sirens blaring and the whole nine yards, it happened in the middle of the night. It hit my fear button pretty hard.
The economy is a big fear factor for me also. I think it is possible that someday the U.S. is going to have to default on the debt. 7 trillion dollars is a joke, it will never be paid. And that will be the end of prosperity and American dominance of world affairs. We'll see what goes down then.
