1988 was a momentous year in my life.
About this time 20 years ago, I was in college
at the University of North Florida. I had at this
point never talked to another gay person.
Sometime around the middle of April of that year,
it was the end of term. There was a guy in my
class that I thought was gay. On the last night
of class I asked him if he wanted to go to the
student center and have a coke.
His name was Ira. He was the first gay person
I had ever communicated with gay to gay. He
would become my first tiny step out of the closet.
He became my best friend. He died 5 years later
of AIDS. I was holding his hand when he died.
He was a miracle.

Missed college when you were younger? Here's a good solution!
by Awakened at Gilead inat my age i didn't want to spend the next 4-10 years going to college classes after work.
i have mentioned this in a few popsts but wanted to share this on a new thread so that everyone can find out how easy and cheap it can be to go to college.. i am studying online with cuny (city university of ny).
tuition is $2165 per semester if you take 4 or more classes.

Oh yes, this is good advice. I CLEP'ed my way out of about 1 year
of college. They are fun to study for and take. Of all the ones i took,
i only failed 2, Calculus and Chemistry. They were long shots but
the tests are so inexpensive I thought it was worth a try.
I Clep'ed
College Algebra
College Trigonometry
English Composition 1 & 2
Humanities
Accounting 1
US History 1 and 2
Political Science
Biology
Elementary Physics
World History
They have great study guides. I also bought old text books and read
through them.
And I was 45 when I finally graduated. Do it! -

What Careers, Opportunities Did you Have to Sacrifice - to be a Witness ?
by flipper ini know this may be an annoying subject .
but if you did have to give up doing what you wanted in a career or opportunity - what was it ?
how controlling was the organization over you, and were you counseled by elders or higher ups to not pursue certain jobs, opportunities, college , etc - so that you stayed in the witnesses for awhile ; not doing what you wanted?

I was very good at Math and dreamed of becoming a Math Professor
and researcher at a University. I dated a witness girl once who turned down
a scholarship to Juliard where she was going to study to become
an opera singer.

How is your circle of friends?
by AK - Jeff ini have been blessed to come to know several posters here personally, and to be able to count them as friends.
i have phone conversations with several here from time to time also.
most of these are 'long distance relationships' due to the nature of the xjw beast, geographically, at least for me.

as my life continues to evolve so do my circle of friends
the grass is always greener on the other side so I tend
to envy people like my partner Mitch who has had the same
set of close friends his whole life.
however, as my interests change i find myself drifting
away from some friendships and forming others.
for me, the positive in this is that i get to know a
lot of people, but do not share years of experiences with
them, other than Mitch. -

I am a firm believer that pride defined as self esteem
or being aware of one's self worth is extremely important
to finding satisfaction and happiness in life.
People get mixed messages about pride. Pride is a sin.
Pride cometh before the fall. But this pride refers to
an arrogance that causes someone to feel self important,
not open to outside stimulus. These are isolated people
who are destined for dissatisfaction.
There is no self esteem building mechanism within the
teachings of the Watchtower. We are simply tools of
Jehovah through the society.
Self esteem comes from being happy with who one is. This
is accomplished by acceptance of both our strengths and
our weaknesses. I think its actually easier to accept
our weaknesses. This is because they are typically easier
to identify and because others constantly point them
out to us.
But it is more important to identify and accept our
strengths and be proud of them. They are incredibly
customized to the individual. Physical, intellectual,
metaphysical, emotional, social etc. strengths are
abundant in all of us.
Make a list of your strengths. Think about how
interesting they make you as an individual. Think
about how you can use them to build self esteem
and to meet your goals in life.
