Why do ex-witnesses / apostates who have left "the Truth bacause they feel that a certain doctrine or belief is untrue then resort to "porkies" to try to mislead others , like the Philip Morris lie? I always find this very puzzling. Why substitute falsehoods for falsehoods?

Does WTBTS still own the _Phillips-Morris cigarette stock?
by lighthouse1956 inmy wife was hopping mad about being df for smoking (and being told she would die at armageddon if she was not reinstated by the time it came.
he actualy called her "wicked").
she quit smoking, got reinstated and never went back to the hall.

How much does it cost to be a JW
by osmosis inok the story i get from my jw relatives is that borg "isn't making money off them", but that never sat well with me.
i've always wondered how much money she contributed to the borg.. since i don't have the nerve to ask them, and they probably won't tell me the "truth" if i do, i'm asking you folks.. how much money does the average jw contribute to the cause?
how much do those silly magazines cost anyway?

The accounts of JWs are on public record where required , including the Charity commission in the UK. Even the dumbest & most virulent opposer could hardly claim that JWs were worth more than ten times BP ($78 billion). I told a family relative who works in the City of London that some apostates were claiming that the WTS was worth over $700 billion and they couldn't believe the breathtaking stupidity and naivity of believing such nonsense.
Re Rand & others - As you are aware , and even many apostates acknowledge , the WTS has no control over blind trusts in favour of the society. I could buy shares today in any stock you wished , place them in a blind trust with the WTS as the registered beneficary and only the independent trustees would have any say over the holding.

Many Scottish witnesses know the family from Stirling congregation whose child was shot and very badly injured in this hideous crime (the article was published in the Awake). You can only imagine what all the parents who lost their children have gone through.

"The point is that this org became very wealthy, being now worth hundreds of billions"
The organisation is not worth "hundreds of billions" as your fellow posters have admitted. http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/11/109093/1.ashx It is an untruth for apostates / ex-witnesses to continue claiming this.

I reckon being a JW is fiscally neutral. Savings on financially destructive habits like smoking , gambling & drinking and rampant materialism is offset by lower earnings from lifetime employment.
I tend to factor assembly costs into my overall holiday budget. On average , the typical member of my cong donates £20 per month towards the KH expenses and the WWW which I do not think is excessive (it costs more for a Sky TV subscription).

"Total # Baprized World Wide: 247,631 Increase over last year: 81,675 Total New Appostates: 165,956"
Heroic assumptions ...
(1) No JW died during the year (statistically 0.8% or 48,000 would have died if JW demographics mirror the population at large).
(2) All who left became "apostates" - people leave (& return) for many reasons. Only a small percentage would describe themselves as "apostates" in that they disagree fundamentally with a point of principle or doctrine. Most would still describe themselves as witnesses - the numerous "I know it's the truth , but..."
(3) "I could not help noticing that the chart says they spent $104 million in caring for the special pioneers, travelling overseers and missionaries. They achieved an increase of just 81675 publishers. So each one cost them over a million dollars ! I wonder how the accountants in Brooklyn like that?"
The basis and premise is flawed , but hopefully the accountants would realise that each one cost over a thousand dollars , rather than a million! Not a bad return on investment.
I often travel on work related business to a small town where I used to work in an office & lost my job in very bitter circumstances. Everytime I go there , I drive past the office block hoping that it is all boarded up and has gone out of business. Sadly , the company seems to be progressing - last time I went , an extension was being built. Bit of a sickener - I can relate to how you guys must feel.....

Why wouldn't they reinstate them?
by hamsterbait ini am just thinking about all those df over issues which are now notorious for flip flopping.. when the wt has to change on the 607 thing - that is coming up i am sure - will those who disagreed with 607 be reinstated without further ado?.
does anybody know of people df for taking transplants who are reinstated now after the flop, or would it be a flip?.
when the now obviously imploding blood policy finally changes, how likely are those shunned for having a transfusion to be forgiven without them being the ones who have to grovel to the reptiles in brothel?.

In reality - has anyone been disfellowshipped for outspoken lack of belief in one ( & one only) doctrine? If this was so , I would guess that they would have excellent grounds for reinstatement if the doctrine was revised. For example , those witnesses who accept the "Truth" but cannot accept the blood doctrine - if this was downgraded to a conscience matter then I would expect a straighforward reinstatement "amnesty".
A far more typical example is Raymond Franz. His belief structure is very different than when he was a witness - he now disagrees on numerous points of doctrine. I guess a revision on 607 (for example) would have little effect.

As a JW how do/did you feel about 6 billion people being destroyed?
by jwfacts inhow else can a person justify that jehovah will destroy 6 billion people, innocent children included?
i could never accept that i deserved salvation whereas almost no one else did.
it put me on permanent spiritual edge because i thought the slave is right so the doctrine of destruction must be, but my heart always knew it was wrong.

When I ask "born-again" Christians about their belief that 6 billion (or more , including those that had died already) will be tortured forever in hellfire they always seemed quite relaxed about this - the usual answer (if they bothered to answer) is along the lines that "this was God's will & who are we to judge the Almighty" so in comparison , the JW doctrine is very mild!
Having said that - most JWs I know do struggle with this concept - I do. I know at least one brother who left the truth because he could not understand why God would destroy his family (they were not JWs). Many (privately) think that not all will be destroyed. It is very difficult to rationalise a belief in a loving , just God with the central bible doctrine that Jesus will return and all who took "no note" or who are "wicked" will be destroyed.

It is as impossible to "prove" 607 than it is to "prove" 586 or 587 & I guess the guy knows that. The arguments in favour or against these years have long been covered here & we essentially make our judgement clouded by our prejudices and beliefs. The only real proof would be to go back in a time machine to 607 or 586/7 and see what happens.
Oh - & still no reply (2nd email)...........

Can you advise the WTS on what to do about travelling overseers?
by ozziepost inyep, metatron's thread got me thinking.. http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/109442/1.ashx.
let's apply some lateral thinking to this situation.
ever thought of that?

The structure in the 1st Century was broadly like the JWs today - Revelation implies a circuit (of sorts) in Asia Minor. Incidentally , the CO has no power to replace or discipline elders (although he may have an input) - this is organised centrally. Paul seemed to be quite hands-on & asked Titus & Timothy to make appointments of elders in congregations - I suppose these are more of an equivalent today - Paul was more of a pioneer in the sense that he started congregations & focused on evangelising.
Most COs seem to retire in their 60's - it is a hard life on the road and there always seems to be aged parents to care for. They are looked after - there is usually a KH flat available if they don't have any arrangements. As far as CO's wives are concerned , they always seem to have a wide circle of friends - both in their "home" area (where their accommodation is) & amongst the brothers in general.
