Life Outside the Witnesses
by jgnat ina newbie poster reminded me that jw's considering an exit may not be fully informed of their choices.
what is life like on the outside, and is such a life worth following?.
i'll post a summary of my lifestyle and choices in a minute, but i thought i'd at least get the thread started.

Hi JG- here is my response - I haven't had a lot of time to flesh out my answers:
1...What makes you happy now? Spending time with my family & friends.
2...In a typical week, what kind of community or social interactions do you engage in, and what percentage of your time does it take?
Depends how this is defined - my work involves community interaction & I have a good social life - so 30%
3...Did your financial situation degrade or improve after leaving the society?
Still a JW - financially secure.
4...If you are single, what qualities do you look for in a date?
Married - but GSOH , kind , not thinking too much of self , attractive , interesting (in no particular order). I dated “strong” pioneers before I was married , but they were the antithesis of what I would look for in a mate.
5...If you have a partner, what are the most important principles you try and bring in to the relationship?
Working as a team , emotional support , friendship , based on shared interest & good morals & fidelity.
6...If you have a family, what are the most important principles you try and instill in your children, as their parent?
To enjoy life , respect for others , avoid damaging lifestyles (drugs etc)
7...What guides do you use for your personal moral compass, if any? (It could be a book, concept, religion or quote)
Bible principles and overall moral framework as developed & taught by my parents . -

Sorry - still don't buy into this. Is it a conspiracy or is it a silly botch up - you pay your money & you take your choice. To me , the fact that the UN still had Lloyd Barry as the contact despite the fact that he had died a few years previously tells me that this was an apparently trivial decision made in 1991 , rubber stamped on an annual basis afterward & only when hyped up by apostates did anybody actually realise the implications of the whole NGO business.
I'm sure some loyal witnesses have been adversely affected - those I know who are aware of it and researched the matter (including the whole of my body of elders , including myself (as a sister brought the issue up a couple of years ago after reading "apostate" sites) ) view it as inconsequential. These are professional , intelligent men who are by no means uncritical of the WTS.
Different strokes for different folks......

IP-Sec - if the issue is more with the WTS justification , then I have to agree with you. The WTS should have pre-empted the situation & killed it at birth by holding up their collective hand & saying "Sorry - we botched this one up." They should have addressed the matter in a Question from Readers or in a letter read out to every congregation. We are talking about a small number of elderly institutionalised individuals in NY who have no idea how their actions are perceived in the normal world outside (whether by opposers or by r&f JWs) & who "never apologise , never explain".

In answer to your question , It-Sec , my basic train of thought is that in essence there are 2 issues here -
1... Should the WTS have any dealings with the UN
As far as the issue of “doing business” with the UN is concerned , I don’t see how the WTS has any choice. A few years ago , I was involved as a director of a company working in East Africa (great - blown my cover now to anyone who knows me!) and I saw at first hand how the UN and its agencies are very influential - it would be almost impossible to work independently. JWs , being involved all over the world & dealing with freedom of religion , legal registration & human rights issues they would have no choice but to engage with the UN.
2... Were they caught in an outright lie when “found out”?
I suppose this comes down to trust. For one thing , I know Paul Gillies in London who wrote the reply letter to the Guardian - you couldn’t meet a nicer or more mild individual - he is physically incapable of telling or relaying what would be an outrageous lie. I honestly think the society did not realise the implications of signing up to NGO status - whether they didn’t read through the paperwork initially or the terms changed (or both).
I have read through all the “evidence” relating to Awake articles and such like , but I’m not convinced. There are many articles and quotes favourable to the UN long before the "scandal" broke.

but most I know regard it as an unsubstantive and inconsequential issue.
Yea...You see how stupid and brainwashed they are? That would include some of your fellow JWD posters , then! I'm sure they would appreciate the description.
I think you either buy into the "UN scandal TM" or you don't - it doesn't really do it for me. Different strokes for different folks.

I think the occasional JW is "stumbled" by the UN business , but most I know regard it as an unsubstantive and inconsequential issue. Perhaps at best it illustrates the "never apologise , never explain" policy of the GB that frustrates so many elders.

how do i contact someone?
by ramza414 ini wanted to know how to contact someone to come over and talk about the bible with me.
i can't seem to find anything online as far as contacting anybody.. the reason i ask is that my dad has been talking to someone who just randomly stopped by our house a couple years ago and i have since moved to the other side of the country (i'm in washington now :( .
) he is definately alot happier than he has ever been and seems to really understand the bible now.

I did say "mainly" embittered ex-witnesses - not all. I think it is a fair summary. I'm a disillusioned active witness with doubts & issues. Since you asked , my purpose is:1.. To explore the evidence for arguments against JWs to establish if any are fatal to my beliefs and which would justify my fading or DAing.
2.. To observe the range of new faith , lifestyle and conduct structures that ex-witnesses have chosen to see if a viable alternative exists.
3.. To keep me up-to-date with JW news & gossip.
4... Errr - thats about it.

THE FAMILY THAT WALKS ON ALL FOUR!

there exists in turkey a family that walks on all fours.. i wonder what jws make of the claim that this offers evolutionary insights!

It was a fascinating program , but most of the experts quoted seemed to dispel the idea that it was some kind of evolution "throwback". Essentially they are mentally disturbed , very backward adults who have never grown up.
It always amuses me when scientists desperately look for some proof for evolution. I watched a program regarding the coelacanth , the fish that was supposedly the long ago extinct "missing link" between fish and land creatures millions of years ago until it was discovered happily swimming around the Indian Ocean. A researcher had a fish in a tank and was trying to make it "walk" along the bottom of the tank by placing it in a harness until he reluctantly admitted that it wasn't successful.
The Mars "fossil" http://evolutionoftruth.com/evo/evomars.htm is a similar case & is another in the long list of dubious "proofs" inflicted on gullible people since the days of Piltdown Man.

Try https://watch002.securesites.net/contact/submit.htm or look up Jehovah's witnesses in your phone book or online (eg yell.com).
This forum purports to be a Jehovah's witness discussion forum but is mainly composed of embittered ex-witnesses.
