I want to thank all of those who answered my request. It is curious that the score is about 99 to 1 that I owe God nothing. Not that the result is inordinate nor unexpected, but I think I hoped for a bit more rah-rah from the pro factions. SwordOfJah, gave probably the most lengthy and expected response, although others like Apostae kate gave personal (and therefore) most eloquently beautiful reasons for. I asked the question because it was indeed most important and unknown to me. You see, you can argue the Bible in its correctness, its timeliness, how archeologically precise, how faith inspiring it may be, you can hawk the Koran, the Bishido Gavida, and any other religious doctrine, treatise, guess, or what have you, but the question that you have answered make anything that any God who has ever existed absolutely meaningless.
Now, imagine 11am saturday, the door bell sounds, and you stumble to find two pretty, cheery faced 16 year old JWs smiling hopefully at you thru the yawning doorway. With an exuberance that can only come from certain ignorance they launch into the monthly pitch as to why you, personally, must obtain, ingest, and forever heed their magazine. Born of the half-hangover and subsequent impatience you surely earned, you stop them in mid sentnece with an upraised hand. Partially fearful, but also expectantly, their sweet, wide eyes wait for you. Then you ask them, "Tell me, why do I owe God anything?"
"Because He is so good!" they reply.
"Hey," you belch, "Barry Bonds hit 71 homers. You want me to worship him?"

in an organization who "equates disagreement with disloyalty" it seems that almost every one in the congregation down deep is harboring something that they disagree with about the organization, but they know better than to let anyone know, except their closest friends, and even then their words are well chosen and spoken in guarded terms.
"please don't repeat what i just said to anybody" is the usual caution.

Good piece. Kevin Phillips made the statement that "history repeats itself in outline." and I have to agree with him. I wondered if it was irony, or just curious coincidence, that your words about love, and purpose, and community within the the WTS are really a modernizing, a paraphrasing, of Jesus and his merry band of followers, about Israel in the first century. It has been an amusement for me, over the past few weeks, to hear the people on this site relay their experiences with JCs and pompous ass Elders, that are instant replays of Jesus being accused of blasphemy by the Sanhedrin. But nobody seems to notice. Your words are chilling because they are so true, but also because we've read them before, just before another sick, dying, evil religious organization bit the big one too.

Can't speak for anyone else, but, maybe, you should be a JW. For me, that was the point. You have the freedom to choose, until you become a JW, and then you lose that freedom. You do not trade freedoms, as you gain nothing by becomming a JW, because the "truth" does NOT set you free of anything, in fact, you will only gain (if "gain" is the correct word to use here) guilt and fear which will be used to chain you to someone else's choices. If you like studying the Bible, thinking on spiritual things, and generally trying to understand the universe around you then you must have the freedom to explore all things in all ways. If you don't believe me, then ask Copernicus, or Gallileo, or even Martin Luther. If that is the case, then the WTS is not for you.

You give them too much respect. If they were there to help you or your son or your situation, they wouldn't tell you to come to their place. Their purpose is not to help you, but to find a cheap and easy way to salve their conscious as to why they haven't been helping you like they know they were supposed to be. (Okay, let's all do a rousing chorus of "Balsaam In Gilead, And F*uck Everybody Else.") They have not, nor will not be of any help to you. Unless you are just curious to see how it comes down, stay away. This is just like walking down a street and having some bum catch your attention with, "Psst, hey buddy, c'mere."

First off I want everyone to understand that I am in way enamored with God, Joe Hober, or the concept of religion in general. I don't think I got hosed any less by the WTS than anyone else here. But I'm a little taken aback by the response to SoJ's rather excellent post. I'm seeing a very reasonable, logical, well presented set of arguments being met with unabashed emotion. Which is a reaction I got rather tired of in my stint with the WTS. Scully, in particular, your answer seems to sum up the replies, "there is no excuse for killing innocent children." And to that statement, all things being equal, you are absolutely 100% correct. As a matter of fact, there is no real reason to kill anybody, regardless of guilt or innocence. However, there is one aspect of the situation that you do not understand. I dare say (although thankfully so) that there is no way you CAN understand, or even begin to begin to understand that most horrible of terms: war. As a past "warrior" I can tell you that there are very damn few absolutes on this planet, but one that most certainly exists is: THERE ARE NO INNOCENTS IN WAR. Sorry, wish there were, yeah, it would be great if it weren't true, but don't hold your breath. In reality, I feel like your anguish is not necessarily for the Caananites as much as it is for all the results of all wars that ever have been, and to that I agree with you. The only hope that we humans can have is to remove that emotion and to realize that until we slip the shackles of belief in some devine entity giving us permission or being the convenient "cause" of it all, we are just going to keep doing it over and over and over. We did it, Scully, nobody else. It was a human killing a human for a human. Period.

No matter how I imagine it, I always see it revolving into a small riot, with either the vaccuous flock stomping out, or the sincere questioner being thrown out. "Don't confuse us with facts, Goddammit, that's not what we're here for!!!"
