The NWT is almost readable now (some random thoughts)
by slimboyfat ini guess there will be lots of interesting little changes, but perhaps the most significant change in the new version of the nwt is overall readability.
there were many, many passages of the old nwt that were virtually incomprehensible unless you had read some watchtower commentary explaining what on earth they were trying to say.
take 1 cor 7:36 in the old nwt for example:.

Psalm 90:10
Old translation
In themselves the days of our years are seventy years;+ And if because of special mightiness they are eighty years,+ Yet their insistence is on trouble and hurtful things;+ For it must quickly pass by, and away we fly.+
New translation
The span of our life is 70 years,
Or 80 if one is especially strong.
But they are filled with trouble and sorrow;
They quickly pass by, and away we fly."Because of special mightiness" is given as an alternative in a footnote.

"You're worthless without us. In fact, if you leave us, you don't deserve to live. You aren't doing enough for us - you need to do more personal study and field ministry. If you are obedient enough to us, doing everything we say, we may let you live at Armageddon." Tone it down it a bit and that's essentially the position. The whole religion is a bully.

Watchtower Real Estate Fire Sale = Comfort for the Jews?
by Calebs Airplane inhas anyone noticed that all the watchtower buildings in brooklyn are (so far) being sold to real estate investment companies owned and operated by orthodox jews?
seriously, i couldnt identify one single watchtower building in brooklyn that went to a non-jewish real estate firm.. is the rothschild family finally cashing in on the initial investment they made in the watchtower at the end of the 19th century?
i have to wonder if they foresee a collapse or mass exodus in the near future and want to cash in their chips before these lose any more value..

It's probably just reflective of the amount of real estate companies owned or run by Jews in New York.

What I think about the "We just love this idea" of David Splane
by Gorbatchov inthe jw.org video about the annual meeting contains david splane saying "we just love this idea", when talking about the adjusted fds doctrine.
"we just love this idea"????
when it becomes one of the fundament teachings of the organisational part of a religion, the rank-and-file witnesses are expected to be convinced about these kind of doctrines.

Link to video for reference: http://www.jw.org/en/news/events-activities/video-clip-2012-annual-meeting-program/
Thoughts on viewing this video: I'm seeing it very much as an outsider, whereas once I would have identified with it. There are many symbols of the religion, from the suits they're wearing, to the style of music which is playing in the background or the words they use ("serving at Bethel"). These symbols are completely empty in themselves, and they could signify anything or any organization. Much adherence to the religion is generated by these symbols, because they remind people of what they like about it, which is nothing specific to Jehovah's Witnesses themselves, but things like fellowship and excitement. I'm detached enough now that these don't pull me back in. The sense I get is warmth within, but stony coldness to outsiders.
Quibbling over the definition of "domestics" is really stupid, as it was just an illustration, not a prophecy.

GOOD NEWS. UK Charity Commisssion; "No presumption that religion is for the public benefit"
by nicolaou ini tweeted this link a couple of days ago but forgot to post it here .
the uk charity commission has refused to renew the charitable status of the plymouth brethren, a cultlike sect similar to the watchtower in so many ways.
as a result, some members of parliament are claiming that the commissions action is a "suppression of religion".

I found a reference in an old thread (http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/scandals/215119/1/Is-the-IBSAs-charitable-status-in-the-UK-vulnerable) which links to a government memo from July 2004 which mentions Jehovah's Witnesses along with the Brethren. (http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/jt200304/jtselect/jtchar/167/4061625.htm).
