Time demands of the Jehovah's Witness religion compared with other religions?
by stapler99 ini've been wondering how other religions, such as other christian denominations, would compare to the jw's in their time demands.. .
i'll lay out the approximate hours per week below.
(i know some of the meeting lengths have changed in recent years, and the bookstudy has been abolished.

July 15th Watchtower - article on Russian court cases
by stapler99 inapologies if a thread has been posted on this already but i didn't see anything.
in view of the other articles in the magazine, about apostasy and shunning, what they have to say about the treatment of jehovah's witnesses in russia takes on a new light and shows the contradiction in their positions.
some choice quotes:.

What proportion of Jehovah's Witnesses will make a convert in their lifetime?
by stapler99 inin another thread it was being discussed how inefficient the door-to-door preaching is, and i thought this raised an interesting question - what proportion of jehovah's witnesses will make a convert in their lifetime?.
in my experience, i can think of two or three people that my parents have studied with and who were later baptized.
but i know of so few baptisms that it is hard for me to think about it.

Development of memory away from cultic thinking
by stapler99 inwhen i left jehovah's witnesses, my opinion of them was not going to change overnight.
my sentiment towards them was integrated into my personality, all the way down to how i reacted to specific words, like "christian.
" when i saw strangers who were jehovah's witnesses, i felt close to them, even though we had nothing in common.

Voting on hall decoration?
by stapler99 ini was just wondering what people's experiences with how the congregation decided how to decorate their hall, colour schemes and so on.
was the decision made by the boe without much consultation?
were many in the congregation upset at the choice?.

Suppose you're a JW and you want your children to stay in...
by stapler99 inwhat would the best strategy be?
i ask this because thinking about my upbringing, i don't believe what the watchtower seems to suggest, that the more spiritual you are, the more bible study you do, the more field service you do, the completer your meeting attendence is, the less worldly association your children have, etc., then the more likely it will be that they will "stay loyal to jehovah" !hurls!
i don't have that many cases to consider, but i have seen youngsters getting baptized whose famailies don't seem to do that much field ministry and miss a lot of meetings.

'street-witnessing' encounter today
by stapler99 inbeen in this town for over a year but the preaching effort was weak enough that today was the first time that some jw tries to 'witness' to me.
(maybe because i'd never been up on saturday morning lol) one middle-aged man, on his own (twould be funny if he was the only one out that morning).
he offers me the watchtower, and starts coming out with his trite 'real meaning of xmas' lines.

What other religions predicted a date for the end of the world?
by stapler99 inthis is an argument that i have had with some jws, who claim that if jehovah hadnt been behind the organisation then the organization would have petered out after doctrinal changes, failed predictions, etc.
the idiotic example of a cult that did this was the peoples temple cult (well what do you explect if all the members commit suicide?).
also it is claimed that the fact that jehovah's witnesses still exist as a religion proves that they were never obsessed with dates for the end of the end of the world (1925, etc), because if they were then everyone would have left.

Iron Maiden rumour
by stapler99 ini wonder if anyone has heard of this, or whether it is completely made up... the story is that iron maiden (the rock band) took pictures from the revelation book and put them on their album covers, and were therefore threatened by the wts lawyer dept., demanding that they sent them the covers to be destroyed.
.
i don't know why im would want to plagarize the smelly revelation book anyway ;-)

John 5:28,29
by stapler99 inthe witnesses understanding of this scripture was one of the things that i could never grasp.
"28 do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.
they believe that the resurrection is the upcoming resurrection, but because death cleansed the resurrected ones of sin, it would be pointless to judge them on their past deeds, so "did good things" actually refers to what they did after their resurrection, and the judgement comes at the end of the 1000 years.
