Well, I haven't wore a suit and tie in months. Although this is the case, I actually like wearing a suit and tie once in a while, in fact when I start visiting different churches, I will dress up formally. I don't view this as jdub garb.

The NY Brewfest presented by Heartland Brewery will be held on Friday September 8th 2006 from 5:00PM until 10:00PM in New York City at South Street Seaport’s Pier 16 & 17. The festival is a celebration to recognize the NYS Beer Trail and showcase samplings from New York State’s 58 outstanding breweries. We have also partnered with the Pride of NY to showcase food and wine producers from New York State.
The festival is sanctioned by the NYS Brewers Association and endorsed by the NYS Department to Agriculture and Markets’ – The Pride of New York Farmers’ Marketplace. This is a sampling festival. A commemorative 4-ounce glass is given to all patrons at the Information Booth/Entrance. Admission allows samplings from over 200 styles of hand crafted NYS Beers, NYS Wines and NYS Foods. Four unique and eclectic NYS bands will perform throughout the evening. The event is a venerable gumbo of New York’s creativity.
The booth spaces are tented and much of the area is covered in the event of inclement weather. Over fifty master brewers and brewery representatives will be on hand to answer brewing related questions. Likewise, food producer and winery representatives will be on hand to educate patrons. This festival is designed for mature adults. No one under the age of 21 will be served and legal identification will be enforced. No one without proper glass and wrist band credentials will be served.
Tickets are $40 and are available on-line through PayPal at: www.nybrewfest.com beginning August 1st. Tickets are also available at any one of the five Heartland Brewery locations in New York City. A limited amount of tickets may also be sold at the gate but are based solely on availability. We encourage interested parties to purchase tickets in advance; we do anticipate a sell out.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the New York State Brewers Association a NYS 501(c) 6 Not-For-Profit Corporation. -

But what if they're right............still the Truth?
by ScoobySnax inthis will probably apply to few here, but to me it'll always be that way.
it's the what if syndrome maybe, but it's always there.
i still think that as a core belief system the jw's have it right, even if their delivery isn't always right.

Scooby, if the bible is your standard, then you need to be a serious bible student. I noticed you said "...but none of them seem to have the ring of truth that I remember from the Kingdom Hall. You can call it indoctrination maybe, but it's just how I feel...". From what you said and I may be wrong, but it seems to me that you don't want to do serious research on the topic but rather go by what other people say, going with the argument that sounds the best at the time. That's like saying 'well this sounds plausible, so therefore its most likely right' (incidentally, doesn't the evidence suggests that this is the modus operandi of the organization? That would explain the many changes) Where is the caution in such thinking? It is absolutely disgusting how so many were misled by these self appointed prophets. If they were honest disciples, they would constantly point toward the Christ, not overstepping the boundaries that he set.
There are many doctrines that the witnesses teach that really are personal interpretations and don't stand up to scholarly or biblical light when examined carefully. Why do you think the society has to constantly change doctrine? Why do you think they actively discourage people from checking their history? Why do you think they actively discourage checking out other scholarly works? Although the organization tries to explain away their predictions, why do you think Jesus warned his disciples to stay away from such groups. (Luke 21:8) The truths found in the bible come from Christ and not the society. The fact that they use the bible and point to some of its truth does not make them God organization or spokesman. They self appointed themselves as do so many other religions.
By the way, have you read Crisis of Conscience? also 'in search of Christian freedom? If you haven't, then you have homework. If you want to have a active understanding of what you believe in, there are no shortcuts, you have to do the work.
I also suggest you read 'Combatting Cult mind control' by Steve Hassan. I am not suggesting that the Jdubs are a cult but read the book anyway and see if you notice any thing similar between what members of cults experience and what you may have experienced with the witnesses. By the way, before I read the book I thought that people were going a little extreme in comparing the witnesses with a cult, but you need to do the research and then evaluate the question under this new information.
One more thing, if you haven't attended a university, I suggest you do. I went to my first class yesterday and the professor of my media studies class stressed the importance of intellectual honesty and that he would grab us kicking and screaming into the arena of honest thought. Sounds like a interesting class huh... ;-)

End of August, no more bethel elders
by thecarpenter init was posted here a few months ago that bethel was getting rid of the bethel elder arrangement.
i was wondering if this happened already?
or is it tomorrow?
-
thecarpenter
the bethel family has its own elder arrangement. Even though someone is appointed a elder in their regular congregation, it apparently doesn't count in bethel. (sort of like being appointed a elder in one congregation doesn't give you authority in another congregation.) So bethel came up with its own arrangement where a brother is appointed a elder in the bethel family arrangement. This has been the arrangement for decades and it was posted here several months ago that bethel was getting rid of that arrangement and I was wondering if it happened already. Does anyone know?

I posted this in another post
That's remarkable. I was wondering about that, ex-jw's seem to carry the burden of the mind control in the lives for a while. I sometimes think that is because some of what they were taught still resonates with them. (I can see this in myself at times and have to reinterpret the trigger situation in my mind) I can see that the same phenomenon also exists with other Christian control groups. This would be a interesting psychological study.

The other control groups that likewise felt this was was the Huttite, Mennonite, and so on. I know during times of disaster, many people flock back to the church they abandon out of fear and familarity. Personally, I look at the witnesses as just another bible group with some good things and bad things. I still haven't investigated other religions yet, but I will coming this summer 07'.

Dr Phil - Mennonites/Hutterites - brainwashing
by Scully indid anyone see the last 2 episodes of dr phil concerning the abduction of two girls by their father into the remote mennonite communities in belize?.
it was interesting to hear dr phil describe the girls' affect as being "flat" and that something just wasn't right.
the mother believes the girls have been brainwashed into the "plain" lifestyle.

Instead of going to the assembly.....
by Dawn inlast year i seriously thought of going to the summer district convention for a day or two just to listen to the information once again now that i've been out so long.
i thought it would be interesting to hear it "as an outsider" - but i just could not make myself go.
i found too many other things that i would much rather spend my time at during the summer months.. so i thought it would be fun to list a few of the things i have actually done now instead of going to assemblies, meetings, or field service:boating/water skiingfishingcampingstudy dance (i danced in my first public performance this past summer!

Well lets see, I started doing these things progressively more as I faded away and now I'm doing these things all the time
- Spend more time with my non-jw family
- I read more non-jdub books
- I associate more with my coworkers/neighbors
- I am teaching myself more programs on the computer
- I do more side jobs for cash
- Exercise more / have a better diet
- I joined a dance class to make more friends (meet 'worldly' chicks)
- I'm back in college part-time (finally going to finish my degree)
Here are some things I plan to do by next year (As you can see, I don't have a fear of heights)
- Skydiving (one time... maybe twice, airstrip is in NJ and I will do this in the spring)
- Scuba diving (Want to get my certification)
- Hand gliding / para-sailing (Always wanted to try, there is this club in NY that goes regularly)
- Travel to Europe for the first time (Summer vacation)
- Ballooning (anyone from NY or NJ want to come with me, let me know... the place is in NJ and I will go this spring)
It is nice to finally do some of the things I always wanted to do, have the time to do it and not worry about what people will say.

New Blood Info
by chappy innot sure if this has been posted before but:.
american medical association researchers have made a remarkable discovery.
it seems that some patients needing blood transfusions may benefit from receiving chicken blood rather than human blood.

that was funny, I'll tell it to some ex-jw's I know.
