Sunshine, I just read bluesapphire's post on shunning. Just looked her up in the members list then clicked on the smaller sheet icon to read posts she replied to, which was the post on shunning. It was a very interesting reply indeed.

I have two...
1) Post of the year goes to the whole UN/NGO thread. It seemed to elicit the most response, from what I could tell.
2) Weirdest poster of the year award goes to Fredhall. Can there be any other choice?

The Witnesses view corporal punishment as something that is up to the parents, though recently they have stressed that the "rod" of discipline encourages other methods of discipline.
When I was at a meeting a few months back, a woman slapped her daughter in the face, and all she was doing was trying to keep her younger brother quiet. I was upset at such a lack of self-control on the part of the woman. The Witnesses have, over the years, developed a justified reputation of being child-beaters at their meetings, and they have been trying to clean up that reputation to some degree.

a very dear friend has passed away (she happened to be the wife of our po).
I have delivered a couple of funeral talks, and Escargot is right: the outline does mention that the deceased is not to be eulogized, but rather, most of the talk should be used to share the 'hope' that is presented in the Bible. Needless to say, such unfeeling funerals have disturbed at least some of the people who have been present at them over the years.
However, I will say one thing positive about Witness officiating at funerals (and weddings as well)...they do not charge money for them. When an in-law of mine did suddenly and tragically, the church official stipulated that $75 was to be paid for performing the service. In my opinion, that charge should have been waived. It's tough enough having to foot the bill for a funeral, but then the grieving are asked to pay up for a church service. That sucks.
chronic fatigue syndrone, m e, yuppie flu.

i dont know if anyone else has noticed the alarming number of jws who claim to suffer from chronic fatigue syndrone,i mean hear in cornwall there tend to be several sufferers in every congregation,outside the jws out of the many people i know i dont know anyone,although there are obviosly many outside the jws who suffer this illness,percentage wise it seems that jws have a much,much larger occorance of the illness.. for example my brother in law has not worked and been living on invalidity benefits for more than 10 years since his mid twenties,his brother is also in the same boat, an m.e sufferer.. i wonder if anyone has looked into this a bit more?
I certainly do not want to say that some people are faking illness, but I too know of several Witnesses with Chronic Fatigue or Fibromyalgia. Perhaps, by being ill, there is an 'excuse' of sorts that they now have from the demands and rigors of holding to the routine expected of Witnesses. If this is indeed the case, I absolutely cannot blame them. It may be better to be 'ill' than have a congregation of people judging you as 'spiritually weak' because you miss some meetings and/or field service.

we've all seen the scathing things wt has printed about the un over the years but in the last few yrs there has been a change in tone when they speak of the un at times.below i provide an example of this courtesy of dec 8,2000awake.. i made some quotes bold print.as you read notice the complimentary tone and the spots where un photos appear.those were probably obtained as a perk with their membership.. ask your self,is this any way to speak of the scarlet colored wild beast?

my wife and i met with 3 elders for a "judicial hearing".. our crime: simply put, was talking.
i showed a friend the un website where the wts was listed as an ngo which then led to a 2 hour discussion of various doubts that we both have had.
my wife also showed a friend the un thing but also discussed with her a first hand account of a pedophile cover-up that we knew about in our former congregation.
Seems like an obvious attempt to crush dissent by cutting off those who have legit questions and concerns; once again, the jw org exhibits cult-like behavior.
