I caught this on a link from a link from a link The group known as the Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses disavowed corporal punishment as an acceptable way to discipline children, said J.R. Brown, a national spokesman for the Jehovah's Witnesses.
"It has nothing to do with the religion,'' Brown said. "It isn't even biblical teaching . . . Taking the life of another is a sin. Being cruel and abusive is a sin.''

Seems like some confusion there. Brown's comment is clearly about taking the life of another: capital punishment. The newspaper has applied his comments to corporal punishment, which, as far as I know, is still an approved method of discipline by the JW's.
Could be Expat, I didn't look at it like that. I assumed he made a few comments, and they only quoted the one condeming the murder. I may be wrong. Nice to get another's take on it though. BTW are ya feeling better today? wendy
as you can see from the story ..these two were extremely fat..so we can conclude that the mentality they had is one of low self esteem and frustration. burn em fast and hard.
I think you're right about him making a few comments, and them using just the one. His comment was basically trying to wash the WT's hands of the whole thing, and the newspaper applied it specifically to corporal punishment.
I can't believe the WT would suddenly ditch corporal punishment. Too useful a method of inducing fear and control.
The Witnesses view corporal punishment as something that is up to the parents, though recently they have stressed that the "rod" of discipline encourages other methods of discipline.
When I was at a meeting a few months back, a woman slapped her daughter in the face, and all she was doing was trying to keep her younger brother quiet. I was upset at such a lack of self-control on the part of the woman. The Witnesses have, over the years, developed a justified reputation of being child-beaters at their meetings, and they have been trying to clean up that reputation to some degree.
Interestingly, there is no mention of this on the JW media site. * http://www.jw-media.org However, they are up to date with what happened on 11-12 in AREMENIA. I wonder how long it will take them to put this story up, and if they'll change it 5 times like the did the press release about the 09/11 tragedy.
