Jankyn, I love your take on WWJD, LOL!
Speaking of which, since Jesus did associate with "sinners" and tax collectors, your WWJD question is relevant indeed.
does anyone know when the practice of disfellowshipping by the jws started?
i doubt that it was done from the very beginning.
i was asked that question this morning and it is not something i have ever thought about before.. target

did anyone catch primetime (or was it dateline) the other night about how the islamic militants build terrorists?
the focus was on a special school somewhere in pakistan, i think.. the way the indoctrination was carried out was eerily similar to the way jw children are raised.
the islamic children heard a constant chorus of how 'right' the muslims are and how wrong the rest of the world is.. when the reporter asked the children the simplest of questions, the brainwashing came through loud and clear.
Lisa, I did not see the program to which you are referring, but the comparison can be made. Of course, there are other religions which do the same thing, but yeah, I see the correlation. Thanks for the post!
for sure!
dung beetles new signature is the best one ive seen for the new year!if you haven`t seen it yet check it out!..lol...outlaw
I like so many of the siggys at the bottom. Jayhawk, I dig the "hand me the whisky, I need to consult the spirit" statement! But so many others are good too. Outlaw's is good, but I did hear it in the Disney movie Aladdin, so it loses some luster, but it's still cool. I need to find a good one for myself.
Battman's "the only informed Witness is a former Witness" is also very cool. I wish I could think of some of the others that really strike me as being cool. There are many of them. Keep up the good work, peeps.
tonite's news report on the fires which are devastating sydney and much of new south wales includes this scary item:.
bushfires have trapped coastal residents on nsw beaches for a second day as authorities called for two more 'elvis' helitankers to help battle the raging infernos devastating nsw.. about 2,000 residents from bendalong and berringer lake on the nsw south coast were evacuated to the beach as a fire that destroyed about up to 20 houses on wednesday night in nearby sussex inlet headed their way.. they were trapped on the beach with wildfires cutting off all road access, according to shoalhaven rural fire service spokeswoman june webster.. "there's only one road out to the highway and that's ringed with fire.
they can't get out," she said.. on wednesday night 5,000 residents of sussex inlet were forced to huddle on the beach as parts of their town were turned to ashes by the same fire.
Prisca, thanks for your reply to this thread, I was concerned about you after reading ozzie's post. Hopefully, these fires will be under control and put out soon.
did anyone happen to catch the show on the cable tv discovery health channel this past weekend about blood?
i tuned in mid-way through it, just in time to see them covering bloodless surgery planned for a jw woman.
the patient was a very heavy, diabetic woman who needed heart surgery.. what i found interesting was that the patient refered to herself as a "jehovah witness" (sic) while the narrator of the program used the correct pronounciation.
I have heard it mispronounced many times, by jws as well as non-dubs.
Some people of certain ethnic or racial extractions have trouble with some of the terms; i.e. "Jehover", "Revelations" (the Bible book), and also "Jehovah Witness"
i read someone's commment about the pagan origins of pretzels, which i didn't know.
i'd like to share with my kids other items or customs that are also pagan in origin, like wedding rings and the wedding cake.
i want them to see that christmas isn't the only tradition with roots in pagan religion that have changed meaning over the years.. any others out there?
Uh oh, I just ate some pretzels (the "Thins"...must be skinny people with arms folded in prayer).
I have always felt that as time goes by, many traditions and holidays with so-called pagan origins take on a different meaning. Example: saying "God bless you" or simply "bless you" to someone who has sneezed...no one who says those words these days thinks of their supposed superstitious origin. Rather, the person is simply trying to be nice.
on page 18, there is an article entitled, 'religious persecution in georgia-how much longer?
' for those of you current with the situation in georgia, you know that the witnesses there have been receiving many physical attacks.
you also know that the key player leading the attacks is vasili mkalavishvili, the defrocked orthodox priest.
The irony appears clear. Good observation Bigsy.
i know there's a million more out there, so post 'em!.
whilst speaking with pops last night, i asked how he felt about not getting his subscription any more.
he was trying his best to be chipper about it.
I must agree that money is the main consideration here, and I cannot understand why an organization which always seemed to pride itself on feeding people spiritually has seemed to put money ahead of that. I said this before on an earlier post...the US Postal Service gets to every home in the USA, and to me, that is a very efficient and effective way to get "spritual food" to people.
In fact, the reason why Fed Ex recently entered into joint ventures with the Postal Service is that their "penetration" to homes in the USA is unparalled. Fed Ex saw that such reach could not be duplicated, so they signed on with the Postal Service instead. And here's the WTBS, doing just the opposite. And of course, the WTBS says they have something far more valuable to deliver. Go figure.
my wife went into my email and found out i have been looking at porn and chatting with other women she went to the elders and told them i go before them on sunday.

Richie, I agree with you 100 percent. What I am asking here is, is cyber-sex considered pornea/fornication? I do realize that it would be considered lewd conduct and that indeed, what is usually happening is a verbal/typed stimulation of another person, in order to arouse a sexual response. However, for the purpose of establishing pornea, and hence, the possiblity of a scriptural grounds for divorce, I still wonder, because the fact is, there is no physical contact. Even so, I am making no attempt to downplay the matter. One thing that had come to mind is that the elders could try to catagorize this under "loose conduct" and if it presisted and the guy is keeping it up despite his wife's protests, then they may perhaps feel that dfing might be warranted. As you mentioned, such a matter is complex indeed. One thing taht bugs me here: the wife went right to the elders instead of talking with her husband first. Typical borgish response, but really, she should have talked to him first, as should all jws who witness or come to know of serious offenses. They should go to the person involved first. All too often, they run to the elders, and while the matter does get handled, it often ends up hurting more than it has to.

You are correct, Valis, but I don't think that dfing would result in this case. I did serve as an elder for quite some time, and in no case was a person df'd for thinking wrong thoughts. The bottom line is, something has to actually happen, in this case actual physical contact.
