I thought my mom said to me that all books that were hard bound were switched over to soft (makes it easier for witness in jail to hand out to other inmates) and that the bound volumes were discontinued altogether. But I could be wrong about it because after a few minutes of the update I do start to hear "blah, blah, blah, ginger"

There was a case in the states of parents who starved their baby, but they got off w/ prob. The courts determined that they did not have "intent" but it was based on their strict religious beliefs of being vegan and only eating things. I am a bit ignorant as to what religion they are or what it exactly involved, but it sounded like they believed in the raw food diet. Anyways the baby died, she had health issues and she was not get the right dietary needs so she essentially starved to death. I could not believe that the court put the parent on prob. and gave them back their kids w/ the condition that the kids be allowed to eat meat. A bit of a mixed message. But then again, a history of puritan religion allows many in the US to get away with things that are just BAD on the ground of religious freedom.

Just wondering what you think
by beaches ini am on my journey of discovery, and have lots of ideas going through my head abou the bible.
i am just wondering what different people on this board have come to the conclusion or what stage of thinking are they at about what role the bible plays in our lives.. my random floating thoughts and ideas:.
1) is inspired and gods message to us, but nt cancels all "laws" and we are just to follow jesus and god and be true christians not part of any religion.. 2) bible is book of stories that people way-back-when wrote in order to pass down verbalized morals and illustrations in ot.

I agree with no 3. Christianity is just another religion. Why should I think that a religion that was born and given birth to many other sects the right religion when there are other beliefs that have been out there a lot longer. I think if you study them all and get a general over view you will come to your own conclusion and that will most likely not fit within the confines of one particular religion.

Wombat - as for what the elder said good on 'im. They should look in their rearview mirrors.
Yeah, you would think they would want a soft approach, but I think they figure if they scream "the end is coming, the end is coming" while beating people upside the head with the Bible, it will cause more people to have blind panic and rush into the hall. But I could be wrong.

Yeah, that I know is true. My mom said it was because it was getting too expensive and now with the library on dvd they were not as heavily used. But I always wondered about the people who did not have a computer, unheard of I know! It just encourages people to become pack rats. Those poor JWs in Africa, they will have to start lining their grass huts with the mags in order to have room to live in their hut.

How Headlines Drive Our Fears
by Sunnygal41 inhow headlines drive our fears
by charles downey
if you watch the news, you're probably afraid of being shot by another driver in a burst of road rage or of your children being gunned down in school.

No one is saying we the viewers are not also responsible for the craze. I think the point was that as a society we all have become the South Park episode where they talk about global warming. That episode in particular was very funny but dead on. It said in a funny way what sunnygal41 pointed out.

Hmm, I had heard they were going to phase it out altogether. I wonder if it is once a month today only to be done away with later. Actually, it was like reading the "reader's digest" as one poster said and it was the one mag I did not mind reading. I think it gave JWs a bad imagine because for the most part it was about nature and personal experience and not doomsday enough.

WT May 15/06 How important we are
by blindersoff inpage 31. the "empty thing" they keep "muttering," or meditating on, is the continuation of their own sovereignty.
nothing shakes them more than any threat to their rulership.
.. the worldwide preaching of the established kingdom of god done by jehovah's witnesses has become just such a threat to the nations.

Come on guys, this is nothing new they have been saying this for YEARS. Especially when they feel something big has just happened. Remember the peace and security uproar. They kept saying we told you, we told you. You told us what that someone day someone in politics will say "peace and security" hmmm, not much of a stretch is it.
As for fear in the "nations" because of the doomsday message, well guess what if you check back issues you will find that same subject matter has been reprinted with the "churches", the "apostates", the [fill in the blank here]. Give em some slack, its gotta be tough coming out with a new fire and brimestone message that puts them on high every month.
