Hmm, clearly a 3 second delay ... like in the superbowl, just to make sure there were no malfunctions??

Why not baptize at the kingdom hall?
by Mysterious inlots of churches baptize those willing right at the church why do you think the jws don't do the same?
would it be too "discouraging" in congregations where there were no new ones baptized for a long time.
maybe they are trying for a bandwagon effect?

They use to, at least for the KH that they built. There was one in Zion, IL years ago that had a pool in the platform and in the olden days people were bapt'd there. When they built their new hall, they took that feature out.

Disfellowshipping smokers is an outrage!
by yaddayadda inhow does the society scripturally justify taking the ultra-harsh measure of disfellowshipping and shunning persons who merely enjoy smoking a few cigarettes a day?
in what way is mild smoking a gross sin that is deserving of such a harsh punishment?
how on earth does the society make the connection between the scriptural exhortation to 'cleanse ourselves of every defilement of flesh and spirit' (2 cor 7:1 & 2) to taking the extremely harsh measure of denying a smoker the right to any contact with their fellow congregation members, friends, and jw family?

I think that was why my dad was df'd, but we never discussed it. I wish it had worked, he may not have died from lung cancer. But then again, considering he continued to smoke thru his treatment, I get the impression nothing was going to stop him from smoking.

A question for Elders or MS currently on the inside
by loosie ini sent some info about the lawsuit settlements to a friend who still goes to the meetings.
she said that years ago the abuse incidents were not reported to the authorities, but now they are reported to the authorities.. is that true?
did the organization change their reporting policy?.

I remember last year my mother telling me a story about the change. My mother's claim to fame about the "change" in the rules was that last year a new JW husband was reported to the cops for molesting his step kids. From what I understand the new wifey found out when her oldest guy said something a littler disturbing and she looked into the matter further. She told the elders who immediately got the cops involved. He pleaded guilty AND THEN HE WAS DISFELLOWSHIPPED. I still go the impression that if he had not entered a guilty plea that they would not have disfellowshipped him because of the 2 witness rule. But to my mother it showed that the WTBTS had started to change their policy about how things are handled and once again "jah took care of it in proper time".

Is there a big "push" going on right now?
by robhic ina couple of jws just left my door.
they started out by trying to give me an invitation to an upcoming convention.. i politely declined and said it was difficult and that i didn't get out much, anyway.
we didn't spend much time talking but i almost felt sorry for the poor man (it was a husband & wife) because he really, really wanted to give away some literature!

Johnny & SK, I will leave the street fighting to you two, as I cannot be bothered. To me the victory is in not caring. My personal view is that if I get all worked up that indicates that they still have their "hooks" in me. The best part about not being a JW is that each person's view and approach to a matter is up to them as there is no right or wrong way any more, as it is truly TO EACH THEIR OWN.

Johnny - I thought the same thing ... summer push. However, other then the two guys just standing there holding their magz up for people to see, the women on Kinzie and LaSalle were actually approaching people. But their words were too much like a few of our homeless here "do you have a minute, can I ask you a question" as they walk along with you. That is why we all have ipods and listen to music on our walk into work, so we can just pretend like we don't hear them.

Specific banned shows, songs, etc...?
by AllAlongTheWatchtower ini know the society tells people not to listen to rock n roll cause its from teh satan, not to watch r rated movies because they're "worldly", etc.
but i was wondering if folks had any specific instances where one song, one show, one movie, or whatever was singled out as being particularly 'evil', and banned on an individual basis?
i was never a jw, but was in the worldwide church of god...the two are rather similar, i've seen many (and made quite a few myself) comparisons on the board; and i can remember as a child that every once in a while certain things would get brought up as being more evil and worldly than others.. examples of specific bans:.

The Twilight Zone was a no-no.
Charles Angels because it was pretty much glorified porn.
I also remember a CO saying that watching Magnum PI was wrong because one of the guys on the show use to be a JW and was df'd, so it was like inviting a DF'd person into your home.
Soap Operas because they promoted sex. And really if you were at home with time to watch soap operas, you should be out in service.
Cartoons because they promoted violence.
Any heavy metal at all was an absolute no-no.
Dungeons and Dragons. Any war game of any kind.

I felt so rushed before when I did go to all the mtgs and out in service. That when I stopped it was actually nice. But now I have just managed to cram that much more into my life, so that I once again feel rushed all the time. I have often wondered how JWs do it, considering I generally leave the house by 7 and don't get home til after 7, if I went to the mtgs I would never see the light of day.
