  Archaeological Study Bible

  has anyone studied the bible with the archaeological study bible published by zondervan?

  the niv translation is used with cross-references and footnotes along with a ton of archaeological, historical, and geographical essays/factoids relating to the text of the bible.

  bought it at my local bookstore.

  That is the one VM. Zondervan has a website up for the Bible, you can download Genesis in pdf format:

  Just click on 'Sampler' near the top of the page.

  So far, I've found that the publishers have avoided doctrinal issues in favor of simply presenting the facts. Critical viewpoints are discussed too. I wish they would have used a literal, verses dynamic, translation. I realize the NIV is reader friendly, but I feel a study Bible should try to render the original text as close as possible. Sacrifice easy reading for superior wording.

  I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the historicity of the Bible who isn't overly concerned with doctrinal issues.

  well it looks like my plan to fade might not work after all.

  yesterday afternoon i was in my office when two elders stopped by for a visit.

  they came into my job and began to question me in front of my boss and my new assistant!

  Sorry that happened lola. I can't imagine that happening in my congo.

  I have been instructed as an attendant to stand at the exit door when someone weak who hasn't attended meetings in months shows up. I was instructed to try and talk to them so they don't leave before the elders could pull em in the back for a talk. Thinking about it now makes me a little ill.

  well, got a call from my sound assistant...to see how i am doing.. this brother suffers from frequent feelings of low self-worth and is actually one of the people my wife and i feel comfortable talking with.

  he asked where i have been...i said taking care of my wife.

  i told him that my wife has expressed the very real possibility she will hurt herself to me...and that i couldn't live with myself if i was giving a talk at the congo and that happened.

  Satan is no longer testing you? I wonder where the scriptural proof for that statement is.

  It could very well be this brother goes to the elders with concerns about me. That's ok. They will hear the exact same thing from me this weekend, with my wife supporting me.

  I have to admit, my biggest fear right now is losing family..hurting them, especially my wife. I think I would try to stay in the religion just to support her if that is what would make her happy. We will see.

  Ya, I was very aware that anything I say can and will be used against me in a JC of law. I think he was trying to encourage me in some weird way by telling me his struggle with it all.
  

  I did share this conversation with my wife, she really didn't have too much to say about it. She already knew a lot of what this guy is going though and feels. She is open to talking honestly about this situation, even with me telling her my faith has been damaged. I'm not going to push things though, she isn't ready to hear this from me, not right now.

  Also, I was supposed to read the WT this weekend, but my name was scratched off for this brother instead!

  It can sure be a shock when people you think are solid as rocks in the org come out of the closet.

  I think the entire congo is shocked right now. They don't know what to do. Also, I assure you Kate, the depression is real....too real.

  hehe i hope thats how its spelt.. if you had family members that were elders did you ever notice the paranoia they had????

  or maybe its my dad in particular?????.

  they things he accused me off was unbelievable, we were never allowed to do anything to ruin his standing as an elder.

  Well, my parents threw away an Atari game called "Combat" circa 1984. The game involved two pixelated tanks shooting square cannonballs at each other.

  They were fairly strict parents, but in a good way. I could have ended up far worse. Overall, they did the best they could and I love em for it.

He didn't know how bad this was.

  Then he said that there are times when he just wants to give up and stop being a JW! But he always reasons his way out of it. When I started to miss the meetings, an elder told him "we can't use Mavie for the sound (as the overseer), you will have to do it." Well, this brother didn't like that...more responsibility. That is the reason he wants me back, he doesn't want to be an MS...at least not right now.

  Then he began to pour his guts out to me about wanting to quit sometimes, and not wanting to fake a smile and conversation when feeling down at the meeting.

  I was pretty open with him, as he was with me. We will see how this develops.
