one of the first things that i realized after i left the organization was that i could actually have human heroes who weren't bible characters.
now this will give you an idea of how much of a nerd i am, but the first person i began to idolize as a 17-18 year old teenager was richard p. feynman, the mid 20th century theoretical physicist.
of course, now i'm on my way to becoming a physicist myself, although i'm going into the experimental side instead of theory.
Ok ok, I'll bite...someone *has* to say
My Dad.
I also devoured books by Asimov and Herbert as a teenager. Classic sci-fi made me think beyond the walls of my bedroom, especially the Dune series. Think of a 13 year old kid reading about geopolitics and environmentalism set in a world 10,000 years distant. That blew my mind.
.
thanks to all the people that contributed!

jw......do you realize that you are making other jw's look like fools with your comments? Try not to react. Think slowly, logically.
i am researching cutting and self-mutilation because i have a close family member who is doing this--she burned her arm last week and it's bad.
i was wondering--i found an article on the internet that talks about support for the person and how some people get relief by using other methods like icing the skin with ice cubs or flicking themselves with rubber bands.. this person is in therapy and in the care of a psyciatrist too but i just wondered how common this is.
her diagnosis isn't even for sure--could be adhd or depression.. any comments on experience with this would be helpful.
My wife did this as a teenager. She talks about her experience to anyone who will listen.
She did this to relieve emotional pain, she could 'feel' the bad thoughts and experiences bleeding from her body when she cut. It was a piece of her life she had total control over, no one could take it away from her.
How did she stop? At her lowest point, after seeing doctors, taking pills, trying a lot of different things, she prayed intently and gave herself over to God. She has related this to imagining in your mind a garbage bag into which you put your problems...then you throw that mentally to God. It gave her the piece of mind to sleep at night.
I know that method doesn't help everyone, and I strongly encourage anyone experiencing this to seek help from trained medical doctors. Cutting may always be a part of her makeup, and she still has those thoughts during low periods....but she has found a coping mechanism in God, and through my support.
has anyone studied the bible with the archaeological study bible published by zondervan?
the niv translation is used with cross-references and footnotes along with a ton of archaeological, historical, and geographical essays/factoids relating to the text of the bible.
bought it at my local bookstore.
Mary, I saw that magazine at Borders as well. I will probably subscribe to it in the future.
Narkissos, I am coming to a similar conclusion about this study bible. Doctrinal issues are not discussed, the emphasis is on current scholarly thinking...which changes.

You can download and mail in a $10 rebate if you purchase the book before, I believe, June 1st. Just go to the publishers website I linked to in a previous post.
Looking through the book closer today, I began to get the feeling that the authors who contributed to the book treated the bible as literature, written by uninspired humans. This means the framework other commentaries and study bibles work within is missing. I'm not saying that is a good or bad thing, just how I percieve it. Overall, I find it well balanced, very objective.

That is the one VM. Zondervan has a website up for the Bible, you can download Genesis in pdf format:
http://www.archaeologicalstudybible.com/
Just click on 'Sampler' near the top of the page.
So far, I've found that the publishers have avoided doctrinal issues in favor of simply presenting the facts. Critical viewpoints are discussed too. I wish they would have used a literal, verses dynamic, translation. I realize the NIV is reader friendly, but I feel a study Bible should try to render the original text as close as possible. Sacrifice easy reading for superior wording.

I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the historicity of the Bible who isn't overly concerned with doctrinal issues.
well it looks like my plan to fade might not work after all.
yesterday afternoon i was in my office when two elders stopped by for a visit.
they came into my job and began to question me in front of my boss and my new assistant!
Sorry that happened lola. I can't imagine that happening in my congo.
I have been instructed as an attendant to stand at the exit door when someone weak who hasn't attended meetings in months shows up. I was instructed to try and talk to them so they don't leave before the elders could pull em in the back for a talk. Thinking about it now makes me a little ill.
i have to say it is richie rich!!
!
Anyone who is seaching for answers.
