  You could be right. That is why I said maybe the priest made his decision based upon the same thoughts that scully had too. I am viewing it merely as a faith issue. They could very well have broken the rules for once if indeed they were sparing the young child's feelings. The article said they don't really know what the boy understands. I just think common sense was not used here, not even by the mother. I personally would not put my kid's business out there in the papers like that. It was a church issue and she should have kept it that way. Perhaps she rushed to the papers because she did have an axe to grind?

  Well Johnny,

  You said you have associated with the bible students? They are all a little different, some are very nice, some not so much. But I wonder if you ever questioned them about their abnormal devotion to Russell?

  I had made it known to some NJ bible students that I did not agree with Russell's teachings found in the studies in the scriptures, particualarly those about Christ being raised as an invisible spirit and not bodily and that he is Michael the Archangel, the first creation of Jehovah.

  They never asked me why I felt this way or to show them scriptures regarding my beliefs on this. Nor, did they say to me "we would like to suggest", rather they told me this; "unless you accept Russell as the faithful servant and all his teachings as being true, you are not in the body of Christ and cannot claim to have recieved the Holy Spirit". This is verbatum what I was told.

  Maybe the groups you are associated with are more open minded or maybe not. Try questioning Russell's views and see what happens. Like a little experiment if you will. Then you can come back here and tell us how open minded they were to you.

  Since that episode I have been invited to numerous "bible" studies with some very nice bible students but the study is always the same, One of Russell's study in the scriptures books. How many times can you study his books? Why not just pull out the bible for your bible study? I just don't get it.

  like probably everybody else, i have been following along with the whole six-screens mess.. i would just like to say, on a thread all its own, that imho the one person that stands out to me as being the reasonable adult -.

  was our poster lovelylil.. she made her point, and has now been gracious enough to attempt to accept apology where it was given and move on past that nuthouse.. excellent..

  I can agree on that with you James. I was wondering WHY she went so fast to the media about this?

  I still think the church or priest should reverse the decision because niether the Catholic church nor many of the other mainstream ones hold kids to the same standards as the WT does anyway. It is the WT that treats kids like adults. They will even disfellowship a teenager. A communion is not really a big deal it is not a commitment other than saying you wish to join a faith community.

  Some bible student friends of mine insist that Russell never thought of himself as that faithful servant, for he was too humble to do so. But it is obvious by the white bed sheet toga that the man felt he was special. And the way the secretary fawns all over him and treats him as if he is Christ incarnate or something. In a way I can see why Rutherford said some bible students were guilty of "creature" worship because of the way they viewed Russell.

  To this day they still study Russell's old books and have not moved beyond using them to interpret the bible for them. I have been to a convention of theirs and they had some books about Russell laid out for visitors to view. Why? The guy has been dead what 90 years? Let him rest in peace already and study the words of our living Master Christ Jesus.

Legally speaking, some mentally challenged persons do not have the capacity to consent, because they do not comprehend the implied contracts involved in things like taking out a loan at the bank, engaging in sexual activity, and committing to a belief system (to name a few) - all things whereby the person would be at high risk of being taken advantage of by persons who do not have their best interests at heart, but who are seeking their own advantage over someone who will never be their equal. That's why I feel it is unethical, even in cases where the individual wishes to (or is encouraged by their relatives to) submit to these activities.

  I can see your point on that and I can also agree that someone could be taken advantage of in this kids situation. But as a member of a Christian faith community, I can understand how the family feels too. And the poor kid who just wants to belong. I guess I am not as concerned with the consent issue in this case, as I would be if a cult was involved like the jw's or mormons. That is why I have a different view then you. Your view really is all about the legal ramifications and mine are about the faith ramifications. But I am glad you clarified this because I will agree that this is a very valid point that you have raised. And perhaps this is why the Catholic church has taken the position it has.

  These type of things make me so angry at churches that claim they are Christ's but by their actions show they are not. Of course Jesus would not turn away any sick, he welcomed them, even the lepers that everyone else shunned.

  When I grew up in the Catholic church I felt the sense of community that this lady wants for her child, regardless of his disability. The article even said they do not know exactly what his mental level is at this time. Everyone deserves the right to worship God without having to be "perfect" to do it. These type of churches are just legalistic. Maybe I never noticed how bad the Catholic church was because I didn't remain in them as an adult. But of course comparing it to the WT, there really is no comparison. The WT is still worse in my opinion. The shunning thing is the most unloving, unchrist like policy anyone can have. It destroys not only families, but people spiritural souls. And for what? Because someone wants to leave the church?

  In my opinion you cannot compare the Catholic religion to that of the JW religion because the Catholics do not shun members who decide to stop attending church. Also the JW's do not have a "faith community" in any real sense. They belong to a legalistic cult of mainstream chrisitianity that is more concerned with the members obeying thier rules than with fostering community within its ranks.

  So NO I would not feel the same way about this if it were a mentally challenged jw kid. That is my opinion as a mainstream christian who also grew up in the Catholic church and was a JW for a decade. I am viewing this from my experience on all sides of the issue. While You are also entitled to your opinions you must know you and I will never agree on this one.

  While I understand the church's "official" position on this, the church should just bend the rules in this siutation. It is about making a young boy who wants to belong to the church feel like he is part of the faith community. A little common sense should have been applied here.
