I don't know why they don't just say that they recieved some "new light" and that Armagedon has been scheduled for 20XX so everyone get your ass in gear and preach. I mean, they've been wrong every other time they've predicted The End and some people have left, but there's never been enough hurt to bring down the Watchtower (unfortunately).

Brooklyn Says they Need 40,000 qualified Brotheres
by drew sagan ini just mentioned this in another post but thought i would start a new thread about it.
my wife reminded me a few days ago that the bethel speaker at our convention stated that "the organization is in need of more than 40,000 qualified brothers to take the lead".
this basically means that brooklyn is saying that every congregation in the world is down 1 - 1.5 qualified brothers(?

When I was still living in the university housing there would be JWs who would set up tables in the lobby to preach at the students. At one point I actually went to talk to them. I didn't bother to let them know that I used to be a witnessling and they wouldn't have known any of my witness friends or family anyway, since I'm on the other side of the state from them. It was actually a pretty good experience for me, since at the time I was still struggling with a few things from my years in the ranks.

I just got back from visiting family in Arizona where it was 70-80 with 7% humidity even durring the beginning of monsoon season. Now I'm back in Indiana where it's just plain hot and humid in comparison. I actually went outside in the middle of the afternoon today--big mistake.

Sure, things can get scarey. But what you have to realize is that we don't need an intervention by god to make things better. It is possible for humans--just simple, plain old ordinary humans--to change the world for the better. It's happened before, and you and I can do it again now. There will always be bad people in the world, but as long as we all remain consious of this and act accordingly there's really no reason to worry. When I get to feeling pessemistic I find it very comforting to pick up a book from my R. Buckminster Fuller collection--he's one of my favorite humanist writers and led a pretty amazing life.

How long till...
by Quentin in.
.
how long were you "out" of the tower before you realized you had a brain and could use it for yourself...took me about six years...short time...long time...how do you feel now that you can think for yourself?

It's scary to think for yourself, as opposed to letting the collective mindset do it for you.
Yes! When I first left I spent years trying to find easy answers. It took me a very long time to realize that I was never going to find answers to all my questions in a pre-generated doctrine. Eventually, when I learned how to think for myself, I realized that it's okay to not know all the answers to all lifes problems. -

It's all completely arbitrary: "It is obvious that 'obscenity' is not a term capable of exact legal definition; in the practice of the Courts, it means 'anything that shocks the magistrate.'" -- Bertrand Russell

Wikipedia is a wonderful thing. When I get bored I find myself clicking on the "random article" button just to pass the time.

Did u convert to JW because u were ignorant, arrogant or some other reason?
by jwfacts into believe the watchtower story takes a high degree of arrogance.
to think you were so special that god drew you to his organization for salvation.
but 6 billion other humans deserve destruction, is placing huge value on your own importance.. if you converted to being a jw do you think you were sucked in because you did not know the full story (ignorance) or was it because you really wanted to believe you were more special than everyone else (arrogance)?

My family wasn't the slightest bit religious until my mother converted when I was six or seven. I started going to the KH with her, and even believed what I was told there, just so my mom could be happy. That's all I really wanted. Now that I've left I'm sure it's really hard on her, but being a JW was really hard on me.

Oh Dear...College is Bad?

Kudos on graduating! I'll be doing that in a year or so myself, I hope. Before I just gave up and left The Truth(TM), I still was hell-bent on going to school. I had made all these compromises with my mother, all of which were exceedingly stupid. I had to go to a school in the same town where we lived, I had to study something that would have practical applications in the new world, and I had to study something that would equip me for a job market where there aren't a lot of applicants so I'd be guaranteed employment and my degree wouldn't be completely useless. Now I'm going to school on the other side of the state, studying something I love--practical applications not withstanding--and preparing to enter one of the most competetive job markets today. Doesn't mean I still don't get crap from my family. Just hang in there.

What is your town or area's claim to fame?
by free2beme inevery where you live, the local area has something about it that is either famous for something good or something bad.
as an example, you go to one town and it may have the historial site of a famous war battle.
you go to another an it might be the place something was invented, or the birthplace of someone famous.

I live in the future birthplace of Captain Kathryn Janeway of the intrepid class starship USS Voyager (you know... from Star Trek). The 1979 film Breaking Away was also filmed in and about an anual bike race in Bloomington.
