I strongly suspect that I will die, and cease to exist.
This is a major disappointment.

To hell and back? Or how to defeat disappointment.
by serendipity inof all the dirt you've learned about jws, and mistreatment and epiphanies experienced, what was the biggest or most painful disappointment?
what did you do to cope with it?
and how long did it take to come to an acceptance of the situation?

I saw The Exorcist last night! ...and no demon problems yet!!! ;)
by Kudra inyee haw!

Scariest movie I ever saw was Jehovah's Witnesses: The Organization Behind The Name. It was easily the most frightening thing I've ever seen. I had nightmares of identically dressed, mask-of-happiness-wearing, sexually repressed young men robotically running printing presses for weeks afterwards. And the music... Oh, God, the music...*breaks down crying*

Real religion?
by I-follow-the-narrow-path inwith all the talk around of people saying they know the real religion... do you (presonally) think that there is a real religion?.
personally, i think that it is hard to argue what the right religion is.
there are so many different translations of the bible.

Witnessing at school
by I-follow-the-narrow-path ini was in class and by these two women (one who was a christian and the other student i am unsure of).
i asked them, randomly, "do you know much about jehovah's witnesses?
" -- they both said "yes" and the non-christian said "i had a jw friend and he really hated it... he disaproved of what they taught" -- i started to talk about shunning and disfellowship.

And also: cross? stake? It's all so effing pointless to discuss this distinction anyways. What matters in that story is the sacrifice itself, not the sacrificial implements.
I have always wondered why the Society cares so much about the cross/stake thing, and the only thing I can come up with is that it was just a "see? we're different!" kind of thing. -

Reading WT & Awake for X years = College Education
by under_believer inhas anybody ever heard any witnesses utter that old saying "reading the magazines for 10 years [or whatever] is equivalent to getting a college education?
" a couple of things are amusing about this.
one is its utter and complete falsehood--what a crock!

Every time I turned in that resume, they asked me what that line item was about. When I said it was as a Full Time Ministerâ„¢ of Jehovah's Witnesses, that would effectively stop that line of questioning. The poor interviewer would change the subject to wombats, or something. Nobody wants to hear about that stuff.

Echoing what Jourles said. There is no question that the Society monitors active exJW boards like this one. If they can get your IP address, it could help them to locate you. It's another clue in the pile of clues they are putting together for you.
That being said Jourles, I don't think it's quite as easy as you say to match server activity up with posts. You will get a hit for every pageview--in many cases there is a 10/1 or even higher ratio of views to posts. I think narrowing addresses down to actual posters with your hosted image trick isn't that feasible. Also, if someone was really worried about that, all major browsers have an option to load images only from the originating web site--your image wouldn't get loaded.
In any case--seriously folks, if you're worried about IP address security and geolocation, even if it's a stretch, use torpark. http://torpark.nfshost.com/index.php. It might be a little slow but it will look like you are in the Netherlands, or Japan, or whatever. -

Hahah speaking of Witness resume padding, I used to put on my resume "199x - 200x: Took part in voluntary worldwide educational community service."

Elder Qualifications
by atypical ini was talking with my wife last night about the structure of the organization, and had a random thought.
i'm not picking on elders, because i know some elders i really like.
this is aimed at the hypocrisy of the performance-based atmosphere at the kingdom hall.. here are some things you do not have to really possess to become an elder:.

No kidding. Have you ever been appointed? You know what they do? They call you in THE DAY OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT. They ask you if there's any reason you're aware of that you shouldn't be appointed. You say "no," they say "ok you're an MS/elder, don't talk to anybody about it until after the announcement tonight."
It's all based on external observation of someone. What they appear to be doing, and what their reputation is. It's all about appearances. -

What did your worldly friends think?
by Fleshybirdfodder inat around 19 years of age i started dating a "worlding" girl and brought her to meetings to get the elders off my back (to no avail of course... i was "marked").
needless to say word got out and some of my other friends decided to check out some of the meetings.
one of my closest friends who had been to many church services (he is a gifted musician and played organ at his church and several others) came to a theocratic ministry school/service meeting.

Fleshy (to continue the OT,) I've seen that happen too. That experience highlights one of the creepiest things about Conventions and Witnesses in general--the flock really isn't thinking about what they're being told. They will respond enthusiastically to ANYTHING THEY ARE GIVEN. The whole rising crescendo + clapping pattern has always blown my mind even when I was a believer. So artificial, fake, contrived... they're trying to follow the Cedar Point, OH model, and other early conventions, when people were really excited and clapped because they actually were moved to.
I haven't clapped at Conventions for years except when a new speaker is introduced, as is only polite.
