Joined at 7 years of age. I loved it, because I was an attention and approval whore. Once I had kids it got a lot harder, but I still enjoyed giving talks because I was good at it. In the last couple of years it has gotten very difficult because it frequently requires me to be a hypocrite. I'm thinking of asking that they only assign me Bible Readings from here on out, because that doesn't involve interpretation or expounding on a topic.

Are there still things that were witness no-no's that you refrain from?
by AK - Jeff infor me, after decades as a witness there are quite a few i suppose.
this thread was inspired by min's thread about sex and our attitudes now as opposed to when we were witnesses.. one thing that i have never done - and it might seem somewhat trivial to many - i have never, not once, in my entire life uttered the f word.
i always found it to be utterly vulgar - and i still do.

I assume this only applies to things that are unique to Witnesses.
I still consider nationalism to be poison, and will not salute the flag or stand for the National Anthem.
Other than that? All the other unique Witness stuff... holidays, blood ban, etc... none of that is verboten for me any longer. -

No, there is no single quality that alone makes a person worth knowing.
I value honesty as a personal characteristic more than any other, but as you rightly point out, naked honesty without temperance or compassion can be a negative trait. -

When you were a JW true believer, what were you most afraid of?
by under_believer init's been pretty well established that all religions use fear as a motivator, to some degree.
the jw's have honed this practice to a near art form.
what were you most afraid of when you were a jw?

Anything Jesus-related, because I have this sneaking suspicion things didn't go down quite like is written in the Gospels.
Would love to hear Einstein speaking.

1st post here, on a journey of discovery...
by kerc inso after a very, very slow process, thinking over things that were stored in a little box in a corner of my mind, i've decided to finally confirm or deny all the doubts i've had about the society.
i'm a 34 year-old married man, work as an it consultant, with two kids, ages 9 and 2. i was "born" in the organization.
so i took everything as true, never questioned anything, and did all that was asked from me.

It's a day for first posters, it seems. Welcome to the board. Your situation is similar to mine, only you're much farther along the fading track than I am. Perhaps you can, if time allows someday, post your experiences on how you faded successfully.

It's possible that the data on the computer is salveagable even if the computer itself isn't. Definitely have someone who knows what they're about pull the hard drive and hook it up and see if they can get anything off, especially if there were a lot of digital pictures on there.

Things JW's say: "If I wasn't raised in, I would never have come in."
by under_believer inevery once in a while i hear a jw say "if i hadn't been raised in the truth, i never would have come into the truth.
" have you ever heard that?

I suppose it wasn't fair of me to throw the question out and not answer it myself. I never, ever, ever would have become a Witness if my parents hadn't raised me in it.
For starters, there are logistics problems. I instantly turn away anybody I don't know who calls on my house unsolicited, calls me on the phone unsolicited, or for that matter even tries to start a conversation with me in public.
Secondly, the kind of escapism necessary to look at those pictures of paradise and a) believe they are a real possibility and b) actually want to live there is completely outside of my thought process. Anybody who says they know all the answers is automatically held in deep suspicion by me.
Thirdly, even assuming the first two problems could be surmounted, once I realized how they take all of those prophecies and say it's talking about them personally? Come ON... Do they even know how that looks?
And lastly, I am a bit of a hedonist. I love sex, food, alcohol, travel, playing with children, playing with adults, gardening, etc... all the stuff that is either sinful or should be enjoyed in a "balanced" manner, balanced with repetetive study, meeting attendance, door to door work. That would have been a really tough sell with me.
Only, I WAS raised in it, and now I'm in a trap of sorts. Bugger. -

lovelylil, this is the updated version from the new Teacher book:
*** lr chap. 32 p. 171 How Jesus Was Protected ***
Do you know what they may do to get pleasure for themselves?— Well, they may try to rub your sex organs. Or they will even rub their sex organs against yours. But you should never let anybody play with your penis or vulva. Not even your own brother or sister or your mother or father. These parts of your body are private. As far as the worst and best study books, everyone has already said it, but I'm in agreement. Anything having to do with prophecy at all was bad, but the Revelation book and the Isaiah books are completely detestable--vile, poisonous garbage. Vomit.
The Greatest Man book was okay since it was mainly out of the Gospels. Not much you can do to screw up the Gospels (though they definitely try.)
