Two Visits From Jehovah's Witnesses This Past Week
by TMS inmy wife and i were both on ladders painting the exposed boards of our storage shed on a weekday when a car pulled into the driveway across the street.
mr. and mrs. gomez were not at home.
like most of the homeowners in this community, they use these homes only on weekends or holidays.

If the Society decides to challenge it it will go down. They have won identical claims in the past, there is a preponderance of accumulated caselaw at this point.
I hate to say it but I agree with that decision. Being bugged by JWs is an acceptable side effect of living in a free (lower case) society. -

Got the call today
by LennyinBluemont inwell, after fading for 5 1/2 years, keeping a low profile, hoping to keep the lines of communication open with the ones we loved for the last three decades, i got the phone call today.
they let me know it was two elders on the phone and they needed to talk with me about a judicial matter in that some serious accusations were made against me.. background: in march of 2005 i was contacted via email by a "sister" we have known for 25 years who we have always felt very close to.
i'll call her julie, because that's her real name.

No such thing as friend.
--Riddick
...at least when it comes to matters like this. I have had "the ultimatum" myself, and only managed to talk my way out of it by the skin of my teeth. IT sounds like you're gonna be okay, though. -

I wonder if the Watchtower Society is going to issue a public statement or remain tight lipped.
They will say absolutely nothing other than the confirmation of membership they've already offered. They have nothing to gain from making a statement.

Look at this, ibid:
Spanish-language Bible Teach Book sitting there in a police evidence box, alongside proof of the man's pedophiliac tendencies. On the evening news.

- Ask her to stop.
- If she doesn't stop, tell her that she needs to stop harassing you.
- If she keeps harassing you, tell her you can't see her anymore if she can't guarantee that she won't harass you.

Golden Age Goodies
by Leolaia inrecently i had the pleasure to examine a stash of 1920s and 1930s golden age magazines, among the rarest of watchtower publications.
i thought it would be a fun idea to have a thread in which i share with you some of the amazing, ridiculous, hilarious things contained therein.
hence, this is the first post of a series of excerpts, scans, etc.

Nicholas Delucca Vaccinated Nicholas Delucca, 6, of Coatesville, Pa., was vaccinated, so that he could go to school and learn, and grow up and be a big man. But he won't grow up; not now, anyway. Reason: He died of lockjaw, a victim of one of the most vicious superstitions ever practiced upon the people.
Nice! A menagerie of fallacy, logical and otherwise.
- The general thrust is an appeal to emotion. Using a six-year-old and specifically citing his future possibilities--learn, grow up, be a big man (and including "big man" in childlike language)--constitutes a general appeal to emotion. This poor trusting kid with so much hope and promise was KILLED!
- The literary device of irony is used. Nicholas was being vaccinated against tetanus, but the treatment supposedly caused him to die of tetanus. Throwing this in heightens the repeatability of the anecdote.
- No evidence that the vaccination caused Nicholas' death is offered, which makes this a good example of post hoc ergo propter hoc--Nicholas was vaccinated against tetanus, Nicholas later died of tetanus, therefore Nicholas was killed by his vaccination. As a matter of fact it's highly unlikely that this is the case, though unsterile conditions during the prick (such as a dirty needle) could concievably have caused it.
- Even if Nicholas' vaccination caused his death, implicit in the anecdote is a hasty generalization. The argument goes: Nicholas Delucca was killed by his vaccination. Therefore, all tetanus vaccinations are fatal.
- This causes the whole anecdote to take on the character of an appeal to fear.
