Golden Age Goodies
by Leolaia inrecently i had the pleasure to examine a stash of 1920s and 1930s golden age magazines, among the rarest of watchtower publications.
i thought it would be a fun idea to have a thread in which i share with you some of the amazing, ridiculous, hilarious things contained therein.
hence, this is the first post of a series of excerpts, scans, etc.

So Rutherford was a conspiracy theorist, and used the Society and all its distribution channels as a mouthpiece to dispense his theories. Fascinating.
For me the blatant propoganda in the first composite cartoon is so utterly convincing--I'd like to believe that if, when I was still a Witness, I had read that, it would have knocked me right out of the organization. Though, to be honest, it's not terribly different than the propogandist techniques that the Society uses today (replacing "Rutherford" with "The FDS").
On another note, is the general crappiness of the art direction, especially in that first full-page cartoon, typical of the period, or was the Golden Age extrasupercrappy compared to other contemporary works?
And lastly--I referred to this in a previous comment and nobody seemed interested but I'm really curious. The martyr cartoon refers to early Christians being crucified. Was this prior to the Society's rejection of "stauros equals cross?" Or was this an editorial slip? Or were they using the word "crucifixion" to refer to being attached to an upright stake? -

"Slogging" - the top speed at which JWs go door to door
by LovesDubs ini know this topic has been beat to death probably in here...but i was watching some of the "friends" going down my street the other day (and they categorically skip my house because satan and i are tight you know) and it reminded me so much of how much i hated going door to door and how i prayed when it was my turn to knock that nobody was home.
and we walked down those streets with our little territory cards in hand, making anywhere from meticulous to rediculous notes about the house we were just at...and moving our feet as slowly as we possibly could to maintain a forward motion at all, to eat up the time we were forced to (yes i said forced to) report every month.
field service was what you called the time you spent between when you were at mcdonalds and dunkin donuts.

Blidersoff, good point, and I make no doubt that the practice does happen. But it was rare-to-unheard-of among elders and ministerial servants I was acquainted with (I was an MS for a couple years and my father was an elder for virtually my entire life) to count time for ministering to the flock. In fact it was occasionaly a bone of contention--many "servants" felt that they should be able to count time for that activity.

The "hoopla" has not gone away. In the US, beards and long hair as as frowned upon now as they were back in the day. Mustaches are acceptable in most US areas, though.
Goatees and/or beards are more acceptable for Witnesses in other cultures, though if you go into the Bethel track in any area you will be expected to hold to corporate norms. -

I'm confused by the reference to the Hierarchy "considering... the flag their own (since Roosevelt)". What is that all about? Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but was there some Rutherfordian notion that the flag didn't belong to the Hierarchy, and that Roosevelt started such a concept?

Daniel-p, you can't count time for calling on or studying with people who are baptized. It's unlikely those "servants" were doing that and counting the time.

Joe, I'm gonna go with Alzhiemer's.
Really it was an edited, dumbed-down rehash of material written by Fred Franz and is an excellent Platonic ideal of its type. Antitypical this, Greater that. -

I've never considered myself overly attractive, so I have no illusions to slowly deconstruct as I age. The things that have attracted members of the opposite sex have always been internal. That's always in flux, too--I am not the same person that I was ten or even five years ago. But my wife and I have changed together; any time I look at her and think "she's not the person I married," another voice says "well, you're not the same person she married, either."
However I am not comfortable with my own mortality, not at all. Sometimes I really comprehend the oblivion staring at me, and it fills me with dread. That was the point that the Witness training used to kick in, and thoughts of either the New System or the Resurrection would comfort me. No longer--now I just have the dread. -

Do you feel as if you're losing your liberties you once had?
by JH in.
i went to the bank today, just to change 50$ canadian to us money.. they needed my name, address, bank number and so on....... i told them, why do you need all this information?.
i remember not many years ago, where i could have changed 1000$ canadian for us money and no questions asked.. it just seems that big brother is everywhere and wants to know everything you do.. i was just wondering if i'm the only one being bothered by this.. sarcastically, i asked the girl at the bank, "if i changed 1 dollar for 4 quarters, would you have asked me all those questions...... .

--->The only way Congress can do anytrhing about anything is to makes laws.
Forscher, that's not EXACTLY true. There is also impeachment. Congress is supposed to be an equally powerful arm of government to the executive branch.
What Bush has said is that even if Congress passes a law, and the Judiciary rules that Bush is in violation of a law, Bush doesn't have to follow the law.
