  remember back in the 80s when olive oil was all the rage?

  you had to cook or douse everything with it.

  then the tv chefs started to notice its shortcomings - that extra virgin wasn't very good for frying (but great for dressings) or for use in mayonnaise.. remember when you could only cook with polyunsaturated or monounsaturated oils, otherwise you'd drop dead?

  Why all the secrecy?

  recently, my fleshly brother, who thinks he's a jw(apologist), handed my somewhat naive wife the tract "the end of false religion is near".....he was being somewhat covert she told me.

  he told her don't tell anyone where she got it from, not to tell even me (which she did)...why all the secrecy?

  he was acting like he was handing over some secret documents or something, this is nothing new.

  when i joined the jws, racial issues were not really discussed much, other than some mention in the material given to me during my bible study in the "truth" book.

  our kingdom hall had only one dark skinned individual, who is portguese, and one of the anointed.

  i believe that he is now deceased.

  "thought i'd start a thread about deconversion and invite some senior ex-cs to give their thoughts on the process.

  i've noticed that a lot of recent threads are about the problems newbies are having, from doubts, fear of hell, alienation from family members, losing old friends, etc.

  some long-time deconvertees especially seem to have had a hard time adjusting to life on the 'outside'.".

  What you call "deconversion" I term "debrainwashing"....it takes longer for some than others, everyone comes out thinking the very same thoughts you mentioned in your post. Myself, growing up in the religion, never baptised, but having a very strict JW mother who still is "in" along with three siblings, I still have a very hard time getting away from it all, because it is still "in my face" so to speak, everytime I see them. My suggestion to those that want to leave for good is get away from it completely, even if you have to remove yourself from family members. Forums such as these help to look at the religion in a clear view, not muddled with the WT rhetoric, but please research what you're reading. In other words, if someone on here yells "the tower is burning, the tower is burning!" don't belive it until you see it for yourself.

  we knew a jw couple who applied every year to bethel and giliad until the age cut-off (age 35 or 40?).

  Coming from a family where there is still four out of nine in the "religion"....I seem to hear the phrase "we sure need that new system" quite a bit lately. The last time I heard one of my sisters say this, I replied, "yeah I'm due for a new computer myself"...lol.

  I've known many JW's the use the word "fortunate" in place of the word "lucky"....very ironic because both mean the very same thing......And by the way the this thread should be re-named "Words and expressions a JW can't say around other JW's"... because I've heard witlesses say just about everyone of the words and expressions brought up on this thread when other so called "strong" JW's arent around...........well maybe not "merry christmas" thats even a hard one for for former JW's to spit out, lol.

  New Urban Legend! Anyone heard about Hormel?

  a member of another conservative cult (calls itself a bible fellowship) where i work told me that hormel, the makers of canned chili and other foods, is run by homosexuals, and that i shouldn't buy or eat their products.

  i asked how the bedroom practices of the company owners or employees affected the quality of the food?

  their reply was that "everything gives off something" and that the food would be tainted by some kind of deviant unnatural vibes because the owners/employees were deviant and following an unnatural lifestyle.

  After Armegeddon Whats the plan?

  from the beginning of the jw experiance, i wondered what the plan was going to be after armegeddon.

  we are to expect so much destruction, billions of people destroyed (how many birds does it take to eat 6 billion people in a timely manner?

  ) with the massive deaths and stuff to clean up........peoples bones for one, rebuiling and resurrecting the millions and millions that have died.....teaching them, and working to clean up the planet.

  Let us not forget both domesticated and wild animals that survive armageddon will be fighting for the same food that the JW's will need to live. I wonder who would win in a battle over that last bowl of JW get-together potato salad?. lol
