If you say Jehovah's Witnesses very quickly you get Joe's Witnesses, which is closer to the truth.
As for what Jesus said? When he was asked to pray it was Our Father in heaven, not Jehovah or even Jah.
Good to see you too, onacruise!
i used to find the overuse of gods name at the kingdom hall irritating.
in particular, one brother must have used "jehovah" twenty-plus times whenever he said the opening or closing prayer to any meeting.. why did this bother me?
two reasons: it is absolutely not the right way of saying gods name.

To illustrate. Let’s say that our benefactor’s name is Sean (pronounced Shawn). Let’s also say that we didn’t know how to pronounce it correctly, so we read it as See-Ann. Then as time goes by we realize this is wrong and that we should be thanking our benefactor Shawn, not See-Ann. If we know this and continue referring to him as See-Ann, wouldn’t that piss him off?
Now the WTS has been johnny-on-the-spot when it comes to other changes. You can get disfellowshipped for all kinds of things that the WTS has now determined to be wrong. Take smoking cigarettes. Up til 1972 or so it was frowned upon, then it becomes a disfellowshipping offence. Why isn’t the abuse of the name Jehovah a disfellowshipping offence when Jah’ve and Yahweh are more appropriate.
Isn’t it worse to knowingly call God by the wrong name than smoke a couple of ciggies?

PS - Had a very nice time at the Portland Oregon meet-up yesterday. Great to meet you all and I look forward to seeing you again next month!
now that a new hampshire judge has opened the way for the elders to be sued in the berry molestation case, it's relieving to know that you can't be sued because you're an "untrained volunteer" elder.
i wonder if these guys smugly think that since the watchtower society is defending them, god will make sure they will not get into any trouble.
Jim,
Hmmm. That caught my eye too. It was a very open discussion with our CO, now a GB newboy. He was always quite straightforward. He said the Society was doing that To protect themselves against worldly authorities who are out to stop the preaching work in this time of the end, or something close to that. And that was said to local elders and minnservs. Of course, no one would ever think that this also put the provebial turd into the local elders' pockets. I think that sucks. I liked most of the elders I knew. They deserve better too.

my kids were 16 and 15 when we left, they are 21 & 20 this year, still living at home and we get on fine-ish.
i have apologized to my son for the way i scolded him when we were part of the collective.
maybe not so much taught by the wts, but it is sure as hell accepted or expected.
Francois, we have responded b4 actually, I just changed my picture. How are you? I don't post that often, but of recent I have been doing some research for a JW-Math.com idea I have. Since the love of statistics is important to our former friends in the religious publishing empire, my goal is to respond empirically, using WTS publications. It flares up as a continued hobby. Hopefully it may amount to something. If not, well, as an accountant by trade (www.greenstead.com) I find the math appealing.
We are all doing quite well. It's been four years, almost to the day that someone (a Bethelite) indirectly referred me to Randy Watters. It was a bumpy ride for the first month as my wife was quite loyal. The kids had no interest in any more WT specifics, and are doing there own thing. My wife is only lightly interested as it pisses her off for being so stupid, her words not mine.
Mathmatically I have heard (Bergman) that if you take the number of years you were in the collective and double them, then take the square root of that number, that's the number of years it takes to rid yourself to Borg implants, or words to that effect. For me that was 18. we were adult converts. So 18x2 = 36, sq rt of = 6 years. So only two to go!
If I recall you are also an ex-pat Brit, yes? We live in the Portland Oregon area but I was born in Ilford in Essex and went to school in Chelmsford.

soon when the unthinkable happens, that is,when there is no more faithful and discreet slave.
(according to the society).it will leave them without anyone capable of receiving "new light".will the watchtower have to disband when this happens?.
the answer is found in the feb,15.
Did this article get scanned in yet?

Sorry, I am not used to the new format and I can't find "edit". I meant to say would NOT let his child die (letting him have a transfusion)

I have apologized to my son for the way I scolded him when we were part of The Collective. Maybe not so much taught by the WTS, but it is sure as hell accepted or expected. But the shame came with this:
I was talking to my son Dan about 3 years ago and said that I would have let him have a blood transfusion if he needed it, no matter what. As far as I am concerned the elder that studied first (1981) with us lied about what would happen if a JW were to let his child die. He said nothing would happen. After indoctrinated I confronted him with and he said, well you needed to get past that, the truth is about everyday living and not blood transfusions. I was vested in the Borg by then and he was/is the PO. It is one of the 30 nails in my JW coffin.
The look of relief on Dan's face and the thank God for that! expression really got to me. I hadn't considered how he had felt. He was drifting away, even before we were. How must you feel if you think that your parents would sacrifice you to Jah've the Volcano God, as explained by one of the most deceptive christian sects on the planet?
I apologized for that too.
Oh, I am so happy to be out!
Love, peace etc.

Nice piece, Dogpatch! I'll have to save this one when someone gets a copy available. Deleted.
morning all.. this is very much a work-in-progress.
if you would like the excel file that currently has about 150 words/phrases and 150 scriptures sorted according to usage from the russell years compared to 1950-1992 and 1993-1999 please email me.
i am still looking for a full range of scriptures and key/loaded words.
SW,
I was hoping that by putting in the verse and counting up the references I could get a rough sense of where the scriptural emphasis was heading, that was taking me about 20 references per hours . But you are absolutely right. In the case of Luke 21:8 the bulk of the references are for Luke 21 in general. This is gonna create a lot more work, and take too much time. Unless there's a way of dumping the whole database on the hard drive and doing some "word search" there. I don't know how to do that. So I am in rethink mode as it relates to the Scriptures. I feel more comfortable on the Key Words search so I will concentrate on that for a while, since the emphasis I am looking for right now relates to Organizational terms to prove through its own literature that the WTS is solely responsible for the suffering that continues due to its policies. Thanks for sleuthing the specifics!

SW,
Good suggestions, I have been seeing the gap as I have been sorting through (I am currently going through my wife's pioneer book for the Scriptures emphasized - she was such a good Witness!) As for Luke 21:8 (Do not be misled, many come on basis of my name) - it had 161 references in the 50 years of the WTS CD, and down 37% in the 93-99 period over 50-92, annual average.
What's been interesting is the relative usage, or lack thereof:
The ever-popular Matt 24:14 (preaching work) has 1,964 references in 50 years - thus supporting the literature sales program whereas 1 Cor. 7:23 (the admonition to not be slaves of men) gets a whopping 74 references!
Glen
PS, I'll try to incorporate your other suggestions in Part 3.
