What Bible do you like?
by Tristram inhaving read nothing but the nwt all my life, i am interested in getting a couple other translations to see their interpretations of the scriptures.
i really don't have any idea where to start.
i have heard the niv has a distinctly "conservative evangelical" bent which doesn't really interest me, but what translations have you used that you like?

"Like" is way too strong a term for what I feel about any bible now. But I keep a Revised Standard Version on hand for reference purposes.

Where will you go when you die?
by Bstndance inthis is sort of fluff.
one night while i was bored on the internet, i stumbled across some guy's page that was totally devoted to his study of the afterlife.
in it he stated that when people die they go to the afterlife that they believe in.

Yes, I remember fondly the "family presents day" my parents did for us a few years to wean us off Christmas. Such fun.

Thank you, Watchtower, for making me what I am ...
by Fatfreek inskeptical!
you taught me how to trust no religion and to challenge them all about their doctrines and teachings.
i learned for 21 years how to do this and i did it well, according to your standard.

..... a Witness, in the truest sense of the word. A Witness to the carnage a small-minded religion run by small-minded men can inflict on innocent people. I witnessed that carnage, and I will not forget.

If the Watchtower was a brand new religion that didn't deceive yet....
by JH in.
lets imagine that the watchtower was a brand new religion that just started.. and up to now, they didn't make any false prophesy yet, and they would be preaching that the end is soon and they would have the same life style and internal laws.. in other words, their past wouldn't be there to haunt them.. do you think that more people would join it?

***And up to now, they didn't make any false prophesy yet, and they would be preaching that the end is soon and they would have the same life style and internal laws.***
Since the WTS systematically suppresses its discarded doctrine and false prophesies, they present themselves to potential converts as a virtually newly minted religion anyway. So I don't think there would be any real difference.
***In other words, their past wouldn't be there to haunt them.***
Their past doesn't haunt them as long as their JW adherents are content to be spoon-fed WT doctrine without doing any research for themselves.
Even if the WTS religion was brand new, starting today, with its "new light" current doctrines in place, it would immediately start racking up casualties with the blood doctrine, the shunning practices, etc. Within a week, it would have a shameful past to haunt them.
JH, where do you come up with this stuff? LOL! Keeps me thinking! -

WT magazines in different territories
by New Worldly Translation inwhen i was a jw i always had a question that i don't think i ever got to the bottom of.. it was do the jw's in different countries get different versions of the watchtower and awake magazines?.
it always struck me that the magazines were always very america-centric and a lot of the issues addressed wouldn't be applicable to jw's overseas.
living in the uk i found some of the articles to be extremely patronising and i could only imagine what an african or russian jw reading them would be thinking.. there were articles about conserving money by only taking one holiday a year or only having one car in the family.

I can't answer as to whether the mags are altered to suit different nationalities or ethnicities, but the reading I've done about the history of the WTS indicates that the religion is American (U.S.) in origin and outlook. WT pictures showing people having fun in the new order, despite differing ethnic dress, all seem to depict a corn-huskin', midwestern barbecue, a few miles southwest of Des Moines, Iowa, I'd guess.
As to why people with very different backgrounds find this relevant to their lives, I cannot say. -

Shepherding Call
by 95stormfront injust what the hell do i have to do to get my wife to understand that i do not welcome these type of visits?
one elder made several calls to her asking when would be a good time to come by for a visit, yet, when they (plural) get to my home, it's me their primarily interested in talking to.
hell....i didn't ask for a visit and have told them on more than one occasion that i'm entirely satisfied with my life as it is and that if or when i need any assistance from them that i will call them?

I agree with Blondie. If they don't respect your home and your time, make a polite excuse and leave. By staying and talking with them, you're inadvertently encouraging them to continue making nuisances of themselves.
