MsMcD: ***And if I were able to get that thin, I'd have to be sick from some serious illness.***
You're absolutely correct. I saw a documentary about runway models, and the only way they keep their "stick" figures is by smoking, drugs, and bulimia. They all look like refugees from Dachau. Your daughter is lovely; I wish I looked half as good as she does.

Why do JWs do these things
by curiouskev inwhoever can answer a few qs for me i would be grateful!.
i would really like to know why wittnesses shun people at meetings or weddings or social gatherings.
i understand the need and desire for members of the church to help other wittnesses back into the fold after they have committed a serious sin!

fullofdoubtnow gave you the JWs' ostensible reason for shunning (i.e. it's an act of "love" designed to bring back the stray sheep).
In practice, the WTS encourages total shunning because it prevents open discussion between JWs and those who have left. Such discussion would reveal some unwelcome truths about the WTS to the JWs, which in turn could lead to their leaving the religion too.
Shunning is not an act of love; it's an act of aggression against those who leave because they have seen through the WTS' web of lies. -

JW parents/relatives attempts to encourage you to come back or change ...
by alienagent ini am rather new here, so i may be repeating a worn out subject.
however, for me it is rather a new experience, since i have only just recently stopped going to the kh.
my heart has never really been in it, though i am not in total disagreement and have made some nice friends in "the truth".

***Pragmatically, I treat a Jehovah's Witness like they are mentally ill. Never agitate a person who's separated from reality and who's clinging to a delusion by challenging the delusion in any way. Respect the delusion no matter how unrespectable the delusion is!***
This is exactly how I've treated my parents in the 25+ years I've faded. Every time they've brought up religion, I've deflected discussion of it as politely as possible, and though it annoyed them, they were willing to let it go, and we've had a pretty good relationship all this time.
On the other hand, my brother (also a fader) decided to take on my parents in an "honest" religious debate earlier this year while my parents were visiting him. The upshot? My mother screaming hysterically and leaving in the wee hours to drive home with no excuses or apologies. My mother and brother are still not speaking.
Your advice is indeed the most pragmatic if you want to hold on to a JW family relationship and save yourself a lot of grief. -

***My hubby doesn't go to meetings anymore, but still has a Mom that beats him to death about it. I don't know if I will ever fully get him to just tell them to take a flyin' leap.***
I've faded out of the org 30 years ago, yet still occasionally get flak from my JW mom. If I told her to take a "flyin' leap," it would be the end of our relationship, which I still treasure despite the JW problems in it.
I agree with you that it's a good idea to line up your ammunition, but be sure it's absolutely necessary before you use it. I wouldn't attempt to destroy the relationship between mother and son unless there's no other choice. -

Being SINGLE and premature death???
by kid-A ina new study from the us suggests higher rates of "premature deaths" among single people.
seems a little wonky to me.
as a single,.

Kid-A,
I agree with you--the study must be bogus. After all, it comes from the U.S., a nation of people filled with "arrogant, jingoistic self-righteousness and delusional state of pompous self-importance." I wouldn't believe a single word written by people like that. -

Meddling mother
by meems1000 ini've posted a few times on this site but really just like to read the posts.. i wanted to know if anyone can tell me about a book for teens that the dubs have.
my mother gave it to my 13 year old son and i'm really angry.
i have made it very clear i want nothing to do with those people and do not want my children exposed to it.

When I left the JWs, I made it crystal clear to my JW mom that she was not to "preach" to my son in any form whatsoever. That included giving him JW books and taking him to the meetings during weekend visits. She understood that if she violated those rules, I would not allow him to visit her without my supervision. I know it's sometimes difficult to be assertive to your mother, but your children come first. They should not be made to feel like they're caught in the middle between you and grandma. YOU must be the one in the middle, guarding your children from your mother's religious interference. Don't stand for anyone trying to take your place in your children's lives!

Fluff- Have you named your vehicle?
by serendipity ini was emboldened by elsewhere's post where he called his mini cooper "nancy".
the large glass of wine also helped me to make an admission.
many years ago, i named my car "sully" after the scrumptious character in "dr quinn, medicine woman", mainly to tease my daughter.

When my car is running nicely, I call it "car." When it breaks down in the middle of nowhere, I have several other names for it, none of which I can post here.

Telling it here is as good as or better than the DC. As I'm writing, I see that you've gotten 184 hits already with surely many more on the way. This is the kind of heartwarming success story the WTS DOESN'T want anyone to hear. And a whole lot more believable than that DC fairy tale. -

I think getting away from the JWs has done you a lot of good, IWTNP. You sound much more articulate now than in your earlier posts. Hope the improvement continues.
