I worked at a local soup kitchen this evening.Just acouple of hours a month, but have done so for many months. Having become acquainted with many of the people who come for food, one young fellow is very helpful and well spoken. He was helping me setup and apologized for looking like a criminal because he was unshaven. He said he was out of shaving cream... Now mind you these are not unemployed, homeless people, they are working poor. They have minimum wage jobs. I told him I would give him a couple of bucks for shaving cream and he thought I was kidding. At the end of the serving time, I went to my car, and came back with $5. I didn't have any 1's anyway. He said, "I can't believe you were serious". I said sure, "What am I going to spend it on anyway? Coffee at Starbucks?" He was so pleased. ...and so was I.

Did anyone see or do a random act of kindness today?
by okie46 intoday while unloading my groceries, i witnessed a random act of kindness... someone in a ford explorer was waiting for a car to leave a parking spot so they could pull in there, they had been waiting for several minutes when finally the car in that spot backed out and left.
before the person in the ford explorer could pull into the spot, a lady in a ford taurus pulled on into that parking space.
the person in the ford explorer who had been patiently waiting, just sat there, they didn't honk or flip the person off, then the lady in the ford taurus realized that the other vehicle had been waiting for that spot and backed out to find another spot, letting the guy who had been waiting have his spot.

Has anybody successfully quit using caffeine altogether?
by DanTheMan inmy anxiety and stress levels are really bad lately.
i think i'd be doing myself a favor to quit caffeine, as it has become a real catch-22 for me, where i need it to stay awake, but it causes me to lose sleep, so i need more of it to stay awake, etc.. i've learned through experience that i'm very sensitive to any sort of chemical substance that affects neurotransmitter flow, and, given my general propensity towards depression/anxiety/paranoia/add, i think that at least one thing i could do to give me a calmer, more stable neurotransmitter mix would be to eliminate caffeine.
i've tried to reduce before, and i've found that i just start making excuses to have a little more, a little more, until i'm right back where i started.. so, i'm just wondering if anybody else has had a similar experience where they felt the need to not just reduce but eliminate caffeine altogether, and if so, how did it go, did it help, how long has it been, etc.

Coffee affects every person differently and differently each day!
I didn't suffer the "withdrawal" effects when I quit, cold turkey, but I think about it every day, like an alcholic!
The reason for stopping? A friend told me I was, "too hyper" and I needed to "chill out". He actually included the comment to align my breathing with the wind and my heartbeat and to "say three prayers to Buddha"! LOL I guess it was time!

What Did You LOVE About Being a Jehovah's Witness?
by Seeker4 inok. minimus had his 'what did you hate about being a jw' thread, so i want to take a different tack on this.
i'll even start it.
i loved some of the get-togethers we had.

I must agree with anewme... I loved the bubble I was in... I love the memories...I loved the 70's and 80's when everything seemed possible and I was surrounded by other beautiful little families sharing the love and hoping for the new system... I loved being sheltered from the world...
I still love all of those big hearted friends who try so hard to do everything right and are full of love. There are so many good people who are caught in the vortex...
...and to agree with freetobeme...I have come to loathe the things I once loved about being a JW.
...great topic.

Must We Worship God as Part of an Organization?
by Angelica in.
i have finally verbalized that it is time to leave the organization.
the question becomes, must we be part of an organization?

Thanks gumby, bizzybee, jwfacts and blondie for your sincere responses. I have been under the mind control of the org for over 30 years and really have not thought for myself for that period of time. I feel liberated to not have to trudge to the KH to waste my time (for the sake of a faithful daughter, whom I did a great job of indoctrinating). I just need a little help with my own reasoning skills as far as this goes. Many thanks.

(Sorry, messed up the format on that)
We have been trained as JW’s that Jehovah is an “organized God”. …that Jehovah’s Witnesses have modeled themselves after the early Christian congregation, which was organized to gather together, to preach, teach and to support one another in the “time of the end”. And that we must be part of an organization. Most of us will know the scriptural reasoning used to back this thinking.
How do I explain that I don’t need an organization, in the light of the so called scriptural backing that JW’s promote? I was asked, “If not JW’s, then what”? My answer, for now, I don’t know…
Thanks for your intelligent reasoning, in advance!

Perhaps it will be an announcement of a reprint of the Revelation book. After all how can a publication full of outdated doctrine regarding the UN and end times be studied all over again. Just a thought...

Thanks for holding the door.... *** SMACK ***
by Elsewhere inyesterday something happened that really pissed me off.
i was walking out of a store that has two doors you have to walk through... the inner door and the outer door.
basically a small foyer.. as i'm going through the inner door i notice a woman is behind be so i go on through and hold the door for her... she went right on through without a word and then went through the outer door, pushed it open and then let it fly back into my face.

I love it and always thank the holder. I assume that whomever is at the door first will hold it and LOVE to hold the door for men. Some become so flustered. Always hold it for older people.
I recently had a man apologize for holding the door because he assumed that I might not LIKE it. He explained that this is how he was raised in the south... I told him, "No apology necessary. I appreciate it".

What charitable works have you done?
by anewme inthe watchtower society is notorious for discouraging the brethren from performing acts of kindness and charity towards people of the world, claiming in their literature it is a waste of time or worse the funds may be absconded.
(see awake of this year "what is happening to charity?
today was 109 degrees in our town.

I volunteer at the local soup kitchen twice per month. After hurricane Katrina, I directly gave an acquaintance money because she was caring for her displaced family members who became separated during the evacuation. Because I did that in a group setting, everyone had to pony up!
I might add that as far as appearances go, I am still a Witness in good standing.
