the perils of following an approach that advocates short-term trading with the allure of high profits are numerous:.
you're going to rack up enormous brokerage commissions.. on occasions where your short-term trades produce a profit, you pay high ordinary income tax rates rather than the far lower capital gains rate for investments held more than 12 months.. you're not going to make big profits- quite the reverse.
if you stick with this approach, you'll underperform the market averages.. you're going to make yourself a nervous wreck.
Your trading style should depend on your own tolerance for risk, not someone else's.
There is room for both short and long term trading. I do both.
As for options, those can be used very effectively for long term profits.
Out of the money calls purchased 6-12 months out can make you some decent money.

saturday, oct. 25, 2008which religion picks the best stocks?by david van biemahttp://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1853756,00.html.
which faith plays the market best when it seems headed for the financial equivalent of purgatory?
that may sound like a whimsical question, but there are, in fact, mutual funds tailored to a number of religions and denominations.
The religion of Mammon picks the best stocks.

Not me.
It's just another trap, but that is MY opinion.

If you think this idiot is "everyman", then you're off your rocker.. he sounds like an uneducated fool, and when this interview was going on, I was laughing and thinking how our founding fathers only wanted land owners to vote at first. I can understand their point of view.
"Joe the Plumber" don't know his ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to politics! I don't want "Joe the plumber" speaking for me, I want someone with an education.
"Joe the plumber" may know how to fix a broken water pipe, but he's an idiot when it comes to politics.
Dawg, you are just an ex-j.w. who knows nothing, and will never know anything, about the ways of the world. I grew up in the world, not in the truth, and most of you are completely out of your league. Warlock

"Were any of the stocks on the "banned" list immune to Monday's sell-off of 777 points?"Well, yes to a large extent. They were certainly immune to shorting. As far as the sell-off, I haven't looked at those stocks specifically, but I'd imagine that they were already so beaten down in the market that, in general, they didn't suffer another almost 8pt drop on Monday.
They went down, along with everyone else.
"Short sellers expose the weak, and when they try to prey on the strong, they are crushed."Research exposes the weak. That aside, we can't really afford for our entire banking system to fail simply because it is "weak", now can we?
The short sellers started selling the bank stocks down before the "research" identified there was a problem. A big problem, and yes, the banking system must be allowed to fail. Intervention, like banning short selling will only prolong that failure and make it worse.
"That is how the markets work, like it, or not."Actually, the market works just fine w/o short selling. I'm glad that at least temporarily, the powers that be decided "no, the market won't work this way, and we don't like it". They certainly shut you up, didn't they ;)
The powers that be rigged the game, but they can't keep it that way forever without causing a big problem to get much bigger, but how did they "shut me up"?

You haven't really proved your titles premise Warlock.
Are you aware of some data that says the short selling rule has hurt the market in any way shape or form? No, of course you aren't. Because short selling is at best a non-issue, an activity that ads nothing of value, and at worst, it can exacerbate crisis. I'm not sure, from other replies you've made, whether you even know exactly what short selling was suspended.

Short sellers expose the weak, and when they try to prey on the strong, they are crushed.
That is how the markets work, like it, or not.
