You're missing the point of the blood issue, Mavman. The blood issue is about a cruel ban on life saving medical treatments that the Watchtower inflicts upon it's adherents. In addition to being an act of manslaughter, they don't even have a scriptural basis for their claims that some fractions are acceptable and others are not! MANSLAUGHTER. That's what this is about.

This made me think of a friend who is involved in Market America (the "unfranchise"). I decided to see if any of the cult pages had info on Market America. I found an interesting article on Equinox, which is a multi-layer marketing scheme similar to Amway.
The link to the article:
http://www.freedomofmind.com/groups/equinox/mills.aspan excerpt:
Other people say they've lost family members to Equinox. Charles*, an
artist in Connecticut, says his 29-year-old sister Katie and her
husband, Mike, joined Equinox more than two years ago. In a family of
11 children, Charles says, "Katie was my closest sibling. We talked on the phone two or three times a day.We biked across the country together." Now, the two rarely talk.He says Katie has begun to tremble and shake during conversations about Equinox. Once, Charles broke down crying, telling her, "I feel like I've lost my sister." He claims she yelled at him and told him not to
exaggerate.Charles has since contacted cult specialists for help.
According to him, Katie and her husband are running from collection
agencies, driving unregistered vehicles and throwing bills in the
trash unopened (which the family found). After hitting everyone up
for loans and credit cards, Katie abandoned her family almost
completely. Charles believes she now owes more than $100,000. In her
notes from one of the company's seminars, he found these scribbled
words: "There are two kinds of friends: true friends and false
friends. True friends support Equinox. False friends don't believe
in Equinox."If anyone knows anything about Market america, let me know.
And no, I'm not thinking of joining up!

I don't believe religions and cults are the same thing. I tend to think of cults in social/behavioral/psychological terms as opposed to religious ones. Group structure is more telling of cultishness, in my opinion.
But for comparison purposes- from a social/pyschological perspective, I believe religions vary from cults in many ways but one of the most obvious is that you can leave most religions without unusual punishment. Cults never allow you to leave without some sort of repercussion- either implied threat of divine or literal punishment, shunning etc.
Besides, cults encompass more than just religious groups. There are business cults as well, for example.

Traits of Abusive Churches and Toxic Faith Systems
by Richie inan exhaustive study has been done on the behavior of cult groups - in several books about "cults", they enumerated 21 major points where you can identify the traits of a cult-like organization.
bear in mind that the authors did not target jehovah's witnesses as a specific group at all, which made it all the more frightening!
but this dissertation generalized all cult-groups existing in the world.... 1. control-oriented, arrogantly assertive, power-posturing leadership.. 2. authoritarian and legalistic with dictatorial, dogmatic doctrines that are proclaimed to be "the truth".. 3. claims of being the channel of communication between god and humankind; having unique knowledge that makes them special.

I posted this link on another cult-related thread. It's got criterion from a variety of cult experts.
I also have a questionaire that I took from another posting board awhile back. I think I have it at home. If so, I'll post it here later.

If you were a GB member how would you reply?
by sleepy inif you were a gb member how would you reply to this letter?.
i am writing in reply to your letter of the 22 nov 2001.. i had previously written with concern over some statements found in the aug 1, 2001 watchtower pg 14 which stated, a mature christian does not advocate or insist on personal opinions or harbour private ideas when it comes to bible understanding.
you asked me not to take the statement out of context, but failed to explain clearly how i had done so.. it is my understanding that it is believed that the governing body of jehovahs witnesses has the sole responsibility and is the sole channel that can understand and teach gods message in the bible.

You know, I was so busy wondering about where tapeworms would live in the new system (thanks to whoever brought up that interesting point), that I almost forgot about cars entirely.
Do witnesses know much about drilling for oil or is Harmaggedon really just the precursor for a Mad Max type gas crisis?
I think the story needs an interesting twist. Like, say a person that no one recognizes stumbles up to the group. Suddenly, they realize that this new stranger was never witness. Rather, Jehovah judged this person worthy to survive Armaggedon despite, say, their being a moonie... or maybe a Catholic. If you add this non-witness to the post-armageddon scenario, just think of all the possible inter-religious foibles that could ensue. Now, that's some serious hijinks!

"Trog" with Joan Crawford. Ouch. What do you do when you find the missing link hiding in a mine? Why, surgically alter it and then teach it to speak. That is, if you have time between encouraging it to chase a ball.
But the scenes of the missing link running from dinosaurs- now that's good stuff!
