"if it was made into a movie..."
Many parts of the Bible have been adapted for cinema and television. The Biblical story of Jesus sacrifice was very graphically portrayed in a recent movie by Mel Gibson. I know of many Witnesses who outright condemned the film without ever seeing it.
"Who are we? Why are we here? Whence evil? Are things ever going to get better?"
Does the Bible really answer these questions, or do people make up their own answers and then use passages in the Bible to back them up? I highly recommend studying some real Biblical scholarship. Richard Friedman's Who Wrote the Bible? is a great place to start.
"Who are we? Why are we here?" We are somewhat intelligent animals that eat, reproduce, and die. Want more than that? Study anthropology, biology, history, paleontology, astronomy, etc. You and I are so fortunate to live in a time period with so much accumulated knowledge. Read, study, and USE it.
"Whence evil?" There is no absolute Good and Evil. Once again, read and study sociology, psychology, philosophy, ethics, and neuroscience.
"Are things ever going to get better?" Paradise? Utopia? Forget about it. Make your life as good as you can make it right Now. NOW is all there really is. Ever. The future and past are just abstract mental constructs. Besides, when you and I die, it is over. I have yet to read of any evidence that a consciousness can exist without the neural network of the cerebral cortex to create it. Brain damage effectively alters consciousness, therefore brain death eliminates it. Of course, in the long term the astronomical sciences show that eventually all life on Earth will die as the Sun gradually expands in its later life stages in a couple billion years or so.

See here's the problem. I look at the world and the universe and realize I am NOTHING I am less than a speck of dust to the cosmos one day soon I will be gone and shortly after that I will be forgotten forever. I can live with that. I try to treat my family and friends well and do what I can as a speck of dust to make the universe a better place for the milliseconds I and my progeny will exist.
Now a believer looks at the exact same scenario and says "hell no I'm to IMPORTANT to be a speck of dust!" I'm so f$cking important that the creator of the universe came down to my speck of a world (which is the most important speck of course) and DIED just for ME cause I'm JUUUUUUUST that important...
Shit! That is the best damn thing I have read all F'n day! It just bears repeating.

Such ungrateful unbelievers! Don't you know that that God wants to reward you after you die! He says so in the book he himself wrote. (Actual authors and content may vary depending on your choice of religious affiliation.)

Heaven for the Godless?
by BurnTheShips ini found this interesting.
this would seem to run counter to the typical caricatures encountered on the net.
it would appear that most american christians are more inclusionary and universalist than some might think.

Why I suspect most people do not really believe in god
by Elsewhere ingrowing up as a jw i never really believed in god.
i thought everyone else didn't really believe either.
when some sort of religious activity or speak was going on i was just pretending and i thought everyone else was pretending too.

Very interesting topic. I can definitely see your point. When I look back on my life, I realize I grew up with cognitive dissonance. I was constantly told that there was a god, was expected to say that I believed in a god, and yet never really felt it. When I was alone, I felt alone. When I finally stopped trying to convince myself that a god exists, I felt so much better.

If he checks his image statistics, assuming he knows how, he may find out he has been getting views from JWD. I wonder what he would think of this topic?

WOULD YOU CALL THIS A MIRACLE ?
by hubert insunday, our cousin's son was shoveling snow, and had a heart attack.
when they got him to the hospital, he had "no brain activity".
they got his heart pumping with the paddles, and he was on life support.

If one truly believes that Heaven is better than the present life, then why is it a "miracle" to keep someone here?
I think it is basically understood by most people that this life really is all there is even if they claim otherwise.
The general consensus is that we should execute the most heinous murderers because they don't deserve to live. Extraordinary efforts will often be made to keep "good" people alive for as long as possible.
If a "good" person has gone to a better place in the afterlife, is that not reason for celebration and not sorrow? This apparent contradiction between what people claim to believe and actually do has always caused me confusion.

I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on TV. While I think your friend has been very fortunate, it was not a miracle in the sense of "divine intervention."
This is my opinion based on what you wrote and what I believe. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion as well. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
