One of my ancestors with the same first and last name died in a battle in the Civil War (fighting for the South, I might add). Such is the power of Google!

November 2010 Awake argument against evolution: does it make sense?
by behemot inthe november 2010 issue of awake (downloadable here: http://www.jw.org/index.html?option=nbzr) contains an article about a czeck scientist (frantisek vyskocil) who became a jw.. he relates that one of the things that made him rethink his position about evolution was something he was told by an unnamed famous russian scientist and professor in the early 1970s.
the argument runs like this:.
simple bacteria can divide about every 20 minutes and have many hundreds of different proteins, each containing 20 types of amino acids arranged in chains that might be several hundred long.

Burn is right. Evolution is not a "serial" event but massively parallel and happening everywhere at once. The old "odds are against it" ploy has been used very often by the WTS, and it superficially appears like solid reasoning, which is why they get away with using it on most JWs. It is a "thought stopping" argument, and I am sad to say it used to work on me.

Help me...
by rafreuter ini wish this weren't the way i greeted the board.
i've been lurking here for about 2 years now, but was unable to really interact because of limitations of my ipod browser (you can't post from there) and the parental controls on my computer.. .
well 2 years later, i'm a big boy, turned 18 and moved out.

You also need to give your parents time to adjust. In time you may find them willing to have a relationship with you on your own terms. Going back now gives them license to set the terms for you. It shouldn't have to be like that, but there it is. Above all things, be true to who you really are because a life wasted pretending to be something you're not is, well, a life wasted.

What's the saddest movie you've ever seen?
by JimmyPage ini'm asking because i just watched "the road".
it may not be the saddest but it's up there.
"my sister's keeper" was a real tearjerker too..

Can't believe I forgot this one:
Grave of the Fireflies.
And in a similar vein,
Barefoot Gen.

Like Kinjiro said, The Killing Fields is a very sad movie. Another one that just came to mind is Million Dollar Baby.

Hard to say. There are movies with sad moments and happy endings. There are movies with sad endings that make you think. Then there are movies with overall depressing themes.
I'll agree with The Road being a depressing movie overall. It came pretty close to matching the book in that regard.
Au Revoir Les Enfants, Pan's Labyrinth, Daremo Shiranai, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Salaam Bombay, The Sheltering Sky - just some movies that came to mind.

by SweetBabyCheezits in(note: i apologize to the internet explorer users.
you probably can't see my first epic fail thread because i used firefox to post.
there's still some kind of glitch between a plugin i'm running, firefox posts, and ie.).

Alright, SBC, I reread the initial postings and I see where you state (repeatedly) that your intent was not to avoid disfellowshipping. My bad. If you are in a position to help others you know through your actions in this regard, then I wish you the best.

No. I used to pray. It seemed kind of weird to do so. Sometimes I felt better for it, but it never accomplished anything.

I hate to say it, but JCs aren't meant to be "fair trials." If you agree to attend one, you're playing by their rules. If they don't want you to record, and you say you won't but do so anyway, then what moral ground are you standing on? It's pointless (imho) to attend just to lie to their questions and record their responses. All they want to hear is your absolute, unconditional loyalty to the organization.
I'm sorry if my comment seems a little harsh. That's not my intent. What's done is done, and I hope things work out for you somehow.
Maybe the WTS will bleed so much membership this decade that they'll cease this nonsense and rethink their dogma. But until that happens, if ever, I think it may be better to threaten legal recourse when the local BoEs start yanking the chains. That's an imperfect solution too. Either way, you're "marked," and you shouldn't expect to get invited to any social functions.

Guys - Have you ever thought about shaving your head - all off?
by pirata inguys - have you ever thought about shaving your head - all off?.
if so, which one?.
would you consider shaving off your hair instead?.
-
PrimateDave
I did. Middle of last summer. I had rather long hair before I shaved it all off. Now I know what it's like having long hair and no hair, so I'm back to "normal".
