Do JW's ever go into churches for "new recruits"?
by Brymichmom ini run another discussion board on yahoo for former jw's.
anyway, one of my members there said she was listening to hank hannegraff (bible answer man) with ron rhodes and the discussion was about jw's going into churches for "new recruits".. he said the process goes as follows....the jw's don't tell anyone they are jw, they wait until the invitation, then when people go forward, they go as well and befriend new christians and invite them to a bible study.
he said it was referred to as "sheep stealing".

The "rule of thumb" has been that a Witness can enter a church so long as services are NOT being held. I'd look it up on the CD, but I'm too lazy.

The Elders came by yesterday.
by Save My Soul inthe loving elders came by and asked me to come back to the hall with my family.
they sincerely believe that the end is near.
these changes are evidence of it.

Okay, something I don't follow: So Jesus said that when you least expect it, then, BANG! But then he turns around and gives you a "sign". So, you're going about your merry business, and you see THE SIGN. But wait, there's more! Now that you've seen the SIGN, you're expecting IT, so it cannot really be IT. But you saw the SIGN for IT. I think the Late JC was smoking something.
I look at it this way. The fact that humanity has reached this point of massive growth and global domination, along with accompanying instabilities, would have happened sooner or later due to our physical and cultural evolution. It won't last, but that's besides the point. The predictions of long dead religious writers were vague enough to apply by shear coincidence to many periods within the last 2000 years and probably on into the future. Modern civilization may eventually crumble, but neither Yahweh nor JC will be there to pick up the pieces for us, though I suspect that "Christianity" will continue to evolve in the coming centuries to imply that they did.

Is the story of Jesus copied from another religion?
by blueviceroy ini have been doing a lot of religious research and one of my favorite storys seems to be a retelling of an older story.
it seeme that the story of jesus is predated by the story of horus the egyptian sun diety, the similarities between the two are remarkable and i found it casts a shadow on some of the more beloved belirfs of this country.
i find it a little disturbing that so many people i know put so much faith in religion.

An interesting question, blueviceroy. It is safe to say that both Judaism and Christianity evolved in conjunction with and not in isolation from other religions. I followed Narkissos' link, and then some more links, and found what, to me at least, was a most relevant comment by Lucretius:
"To believe in King Arthur or Jesus, it's not the same. Who puts his faith and future in King Arthur's hands? The stake is very different. Compare Jesus and Julius Caesar. They belong to the same time. But the testimonies in favor of Caesar are more accurate (made by real historians and not apologetic) and credible (no miracle, no virginal birth). Remember the slogan repeated by David Hume : extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."

Defending outspoken atheism
by serotonin_wraith inwell vinny and probably some others have come to wonder about the purpose of outspoken atheism, especially when it is presented in a rude manner.
here's my thoughts on the matter.. many of us here will have relatives who are jehovah's witnesses.
we want them to escape from that cult.

I'm an atheist. I don't mind "defending" atheism online because I have nothing to lose by doing it. In everyday life "offline" I try to avoid argument and too much controversy. I'm just a peaceful person, and I try to get along as best as I can. However, defending atheism online seems a bit pointless for the most part because theists have already made up their minds and could often care less what I say in defense of my position.
Regardless, every sentient being on this planet perceives reality in its own personal way. Some perceive God, Goddess, or Pantheon. Some see the Universe in a reductionist way where cause answers effect following specific rules. Others struggle to wrap their minds around the unanswerable, the ultimately unknowable, and yet find joy in being. Does life have a purpose? Who cares! Just live!

Mom's Awake ditching incident
by Junction-Guy inmy mom went to the doctor last week and while she was waiting to be seen she noticed that awake magazines were all over the lobby.
there wasnt any other magazines to be read.
she happened to look in a trash can and noticed that it was full of "worldly" magazines.

personally, I don't think it's necessary to throw out WT and A! mags left in public places. Anyone, other than a jdub, who looks through one is bound to see it for the thinly disguised propaganda that it is: PR for a publishing co wrapped in the skin of a religion. Still, the nerve of a jdub to throw out "worldly" mags and just leave A!s would piss me off too.

Are you a good person? Take the Bible challenge.
by jesusisgod inmost people consider themselves to be a good person.
i have asked several people just in passing and with family members, and they have confirmed this.
when asked, "do you consider yourself to be a good person?
