New Here Sorta
by Jolinar ini stumbled across this site last august and created an account but a series of events led me to run away (i can post the story if you like) and i have been moving around a bit until i finally got settled some.
along the way due to my mother's sheltering i had some bad experience because i didn't know as much about the real world as i should have.
i ingested as i have before a psychoactive one night and a surge of memories came rushing back to me of my childhood and a massive handfull of them were tied to the time i was made to endure going to the kingdom hall and socializing with many members outside of.

I am not BRAND new here, but still new enough to realize how far I have yet to go on the path towards JW 'recovery' (at least when compared to the many here with more years & experience behind them).
Most people have probably already read or heard my story (you are welcome to read my profile & post history), so I will keep it brief by saying that life as a born-and-raised JW--with a few other challenges thrown in for good measure--has been EXTREMELY difficult, things are not much easier now, & I am so incredibly grateful to have found the kind & supportive people on this site.
I look forward to reading further posts from you & getting to know you better, as I have others on this site. My opportunities to log on or post here are somewhat limited (Internet access only at work), but I try to do so at least twice a day & will answer each & every personal message I receive, no matter how long it takes me to do so.
Your Friend,
Desert Rat (109 degrees here today )

Drew Sagan--I completely agree with your comments about 'cliques' & 'in-crowds' in the Organization. One of the things that always burned me up the most, especially since these are people who profess to display 'Christian' love to all, unconditionally..
There is a congregation here locally (the last I heard, they are still this way) where perhaps one-third to one-half of the publishers are related to each other (what I like to call 'dynasties'), they come from great wealth & own their own businesses, & go on 'Witness' cruises to places like the Virgin Islands two or three times a year. The prevailing attitude there seems to be that if you don't drive something like a Lexus or make a six-figure income per year, you don't exist (nevermind the fact that you profess the same beliefs..). The last time I attended a Public Talk there, about five years ago, not one person greeted or otherwise acknowledged me, before or after..
Years ago when I started having problems with what I saw as hypocrisy, double standards, & the like, the typical advice to me was, "Well, why don't you just go to a different congregation?" To which I replied once, "Truth, by its very definition, requires a certain CONSISTENCY from place to place, right? So it shouldn't matter where one attends the meetings.." They were silent..

OpenFireGlass--I have the Timothy Leary book but haven't actually read it yet. Really admire his life & genius, especially after learning that we share the same Mayan birth sign.
Lunch is over for me now so gotta go. Hope everybody has a wonderful day.

Jolinar:
As I read & re-read your story, I cannot help but notice certain commonalities (even if the family situations were different): that sense of rootlessness & alienation from the world around, of being a 'square peg in a world of round holes,' of being different & just not being able to put a finger on it. And certainly the JW indoctrination just makes things that much more difficult.
If you are ever interested in researching Asperger's/the autism spectrum, a couple of good sites include www.aspergers.com & www.aspergers.org. I am not normally a big fan of Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, but their treatment of this subject is actually quite good & they also reference a number of links & other resources that I have found helpful.
Hang in there, buddy. My heart goes out to you.

"Dances With Wolves," the ending where Wind In His Hair (sitting on his horse at the top of a steep canyon) calls out to Dances With Wolves that he will always be his friend...
Oddly enough, "Schindler's List." Again the ending, where Oskar Schindler (played by Liam Neeson) laments to Stern (Ben Kingsley) 'if only I could have saved one more..."
Music actually tends to be more of a trigger for me. 'Empty Garden' by Elton John, & now almost anything by George Harrison (who died of the same cancer as did my father). Can't listen to 'My Sweet Lord' or 'What Is Life' without completely breaking down..

A very warm welcome to you, Jolinar.
I could not help but notice your statement earlier in this thread that you think you might be on the autism spectrum? I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (a form of autism) in November & that, combined with the JW upbringing & other diagnoses (anxiety disorder, OCD, etc.), has made life pretty challenging.
I completely understand the difficulty in speaking with other family members who are still active JW's when you are not. My mother is still gung-ho, a regular pioneer, & to make it even more interesting--lives in the same apartment complex.
Once again welcome to the site. I am sure you will find plenty of support & encouragement here, even as I have.

How far will you go to defile the Watchtower...

Perhaps this was a sign of things to come?
I can think of two occasions in my life where I may have LITERALLY defiled the WTS (or shall I say, A WATCHTOWER).
Once as a child, I was feeling sick out in field service & ended up vomiting on the literature in the back seat of our car. Then about ten years ago, a good friend & fading ex-Ministerial Servant like myself was introducing me to the joys of Cannabis Sativa. As I had no 'papers' on hand & there was no place open nearby at that hour, we simply took a page out of an old NWT Bible which was collecting dust on my closet shelf...
Not a bad experience
