I don't know Lawn Mower Death, Seether and Trivium (shame on me!). Nirvana's Nevermind was my favorite one when I was a teenager. Got me a lot of problem in the congregation. The word "nivana" had a tendency to make them nervous. I like all the Guns n' Roses records of the Slash era. Nick Cave and the Bad Seed. Metallica is great even though their last records have a very different flavor. Radiohead: I looove The Bends. What a great band! I don't know if there are many people like me and diamondblue in this forum, but once in while I have to play a CD and let the music wash through me. To me it's like breathing.

I just discovered Guns n' Roses
by thecarpenter ini just discovered how good guns n' roses are.
i was listening to a bunch of their songs and i can't believe they wrote so many good songs.
i was a quite a head banger before i became a witness and after joining i avoided a lot of heavy metal rock and a lot of worldly music in general.

my daughter leaves for the ARMY thursday
by purplesofa ini have four sons and my youngest is a daughter.. she leaves for the army on thursday.
i am in a state of panic and emotion to try to convince her to not go.. i just heard on tv that becuase of the rising violence in bahgdad, bush is sending more troops to iraq.
the developments in isreal and lebanon only seem to be escalating.......the un asking britian and us for help but because of prior commitments......(iraq) are unable.

I'm sorry for what you're going through, purplesofa. If my kid made such a decision, I would not agree with her too but the law acknowledges her right to make such a bad decision. I think we all make mistakes when we are that young and I think it's probably necessary for our own psychological maturation. She probably needs to make her own decisions. I think they will probably not send her to very dangerous places because she's a girl (most men in the military hierarchy wouldn't want to see their daughter on a battlefield). But don't tell her that because she would not appreciate it. She probably wants to show that she can do typically "manly" things like fight in wars. Besides I think we're still pretty far from a "World War III" (in spite of what certain people in this forum think and seem to wish for - especially those who think they can't be drafted...). Try and understand her reasons. If you can't make up her mind, tell her that you don't agree with her but that you respect her right to make such a decision (the hardest part of a mother's duty). Your daughter is probably a great kid and she will probably come back to her senses. When she does, this experience might well be a way to learn and attain a greater psychological maturity.

Gee, I remember arguing like forever with the elders and my parents about the music I listened to and played. To me music has always been one of the most important things. When other saved money to buy a car, I saved it to buy a guitar. No need to say I was kind of a black sheep in the congregation. Thinking about that reminds me how glad that I am not in J-dubism anymore. (sorry if I drifted off the topic) The Guns n' Roses rock!!! The Red Hot Chili Peppers too. I especially like "Blood Sugar Sex Magic" and "Stadium Arcadium" (even though there's not one of their records I don't like...)

Jehovah's Witnesses and beards
by Dave_T inwhen i was a jw, i don't remember having read in the watchtower literature a rule explicitely forbidding to be bearded.
the pictures depicting "faithful witnesses" of the past (abraham, job,, moses, the apostles, etc.
) always show bearded men.

Funny how elders can create their own additional rules based on what they regard as possible stumbling causes.

What about women not allowed to wear pants at the kingdom hall or on field service: was it a local rule or a "canonical" Watchtower rule?

Thanks for the research, Blondie. Legolas was right. I never thought that they annoyed me that much just because they didn't want me to look like a hippie!

When I was a JW, I don't remember having read in the Watchtower literature a rule explicitely forbidding to be bearded. The pictures depicting "faithful witnesses" of the past (Abraham, Job,, Moses, the apostles, etc.) always show bearded men. But the modern witnesses are always pictured beardless. While I don't remember having read a rule against beards, I remember the elders really annoyed me about mine. Was it just a local rule made up by the congregation's elders or is it more than that? If it's more widespread, how do they explain the sudden modern unlawfulness of the beard?

Were your parents a different religion before JDubism?
by Crumpet ini know an awful lot here are 3rd and 4th generation - but were there any who's parents become dubs as adults?
i'd be interested to here what it was that made an adult become a jw when not brought up that way?.
i'll relate my parents experience shortly...but its something i;ve been thinking about a lot.

I remember a few Chrismases and birthdays too. Say, Jim, did your mom convert your dad like my mother did my father? Thanks, Crumpet. It's nice to know that there are people who can relate. Do you have any idea what really changed your father's perspective on religion if you don't mind me asking? Maybe a particular event?
