A question for you....
by Dia ini just got to wondering this, after reading the post by the girl who is thinking of joining the wts..... (this would be for those who became a jw by choice - not birth, tho of course, anyone here can comment).. i'm wondering, what kind of christian were you prior to your conversion to the wts?.
you can give your denomination if you choose.
but what i'm really asking about is what was your experience with religion, in general?.

I just got to wondering this, after reading the post by the girl who is thinking of joining the WTS....
(This would be for those who became a JW by choice - not birth, tho of course, anyone here can comment).
I'm wondering, what KIND of Christian were you prior to your conversion to the WTS?
You can give your denomination if you choose. But what I'm really asking about is what was your experience with religion, in general?
Did you go to church?
Did you go to Sunday School?
Were you passionate about it? Bored silly?
Was your family religious?
Did you celebrate holidays? Was that a religious experience or a social event?
Did you ever go through that 'teen stage' when people people start looking around at all different kinds of religions?
Did you ever go through that stage when kids start to question what they were brought up on? And start to doubt everything they think they know?
If you did, how did the people close to you react?
Did religion matter to you? At all? A lot?
Etc., etc., etc...
Please feel free to take this in any direction you wish. I'm just wondering....

I Just don't understand....
by LFitzwater ini have read some of what is being said about the ray franz/bill bowen incident.
i did not read the first post by bill bowen and only came to know about it recently, but from what i have read things are blown out of proportion.
the mistake that i think that is being made here is that this seems to be a bill vs ray fight.

The JW Response to Brainwashing Accusations
by OrbitingTheSun ini was just thinking about a discussion i had a few years ago when i was still an active jw... .
i asked a pioneer sister why so many people accused jws of brainwashing.
she happily responded, "well, they accuse us of brainwashing because that is what we do.

Ahh....trite 'clever' backtalk....an essential pillar of serious religious discussion (cough, cough)
I think the correct response is, "Oh. You don't really understand what that term means? Let me see if I can explain it. No, it doesn't have anything to do with soap and water or making something 'better'. Not even in a symbolic way. Not even a little bit...."

Can you give a laymen's explanation of the change in the counting method to which you refer? Please keep in mind that you are talking to someone who knows NOTHING about it.
Thanks.

proof of a "higher power"?
by Shakita ini spoke with my brother on the phone last night.

You and your brother might enjoy reading Dr. Melvin Morse's book, Closer to the Light. It's astonishingly wonderful and will give him a peaceful mind and confirmation of what he experienced.
My best to you and thank you for your story.

Does anybody here harass conventioneers?
by czarofmischief ini remember the good old days back in the 80's, when i was but a tiny tot, and folks used to stand outside the convention with megaphones and shout and try to hand out apostate literature.. now that i'm older, it sounds like fun.
anybody do that kind of thing these days?.

I can't help but to think, what a profound test of the WTS's 'hold' these protestors provide. They say, don't look, don't ask, don't read and all the little JWs do just that. And the social pressure that comes from being at a huge convention where ALL the JWs do just that. Wow. Amazing. What a power trip for the guys at the top. What a test for how well they're doing.

This was GREAT. Try reading around on some of the other threads too, like, 'Are JWs a Cult?' and others.
Fascinating. And a fascinating combo of JWs and exJWs.
Thanks!
