i was just wondering what was the most astounding thing you guys have had a jw say to you.
whether it was while you were still in the borg or after you left.
i've heard some rather funny stories on this subject.
A JW whose adolescent stepson committed suicide remarked flippantly (in typical, 'not my fault' fashion), 'Well they were going to kill him anyway. He was into drugs and everything'
Nauseating.
from everything i've read here, the jist seems to be that if you're disfellowshipped, you have little chance of winning a lawsuit against the borg because the government still gives them the right to "shun" members if they see fit.. it occurred to me that perhaps we're ignoring a potential ray of light at the end of the tunnel.
what if we tried to lobby the government into changing this, so that it would be illegal for any religion to shun former members?
it's a long shot maybe, but if it could be shown (maybe on another program like dateline) of how unfair, cruel and inhumane it is to tell people they must shun family members or close friends simply because they don't think the same way as them, then maybe eventually, one day, a law would be passed forbidding shunning in any religion.. it's not just ex-witnesses that would support this: ex-mormons, ex-scientologists, ex-seventh day adventists etc.
The govenment ought to be able to step in when it is a minor himself (or herself) who is being shunned by their own family members (esp. parents).
The govenment doesn't have to dictate what they can and can't do; they should just have the legal right to take their kids away from them and mandate that they go to parenting classes.
Outside of the legal stuff, I think people ought to work very hard to make the public aware of what the potential repercussions are of joining the WTS, or sometimes of even 'looking into it'.
Many, many people would just steer clear from the beginning if the WTS had less power to lure them in and - ooops - just forgot to tell them about that part.
today i spoke with a former jw i've been in touch with for several years and discovered what i think could be a major bombshell for the wts.
as we all know, shunning is the most powerful weapon the wt cult has over its members and for decades the wts has been able to get away with practicing it at their whim.
the us and other courts have permitted them to to use it, even though it destroys families and has ruined countless lives.
Two questions:
1) How many kids and how old are they?
2) Does anyone know how the Catholic church carries out excommunication? Once a person is excommunicated, what exactly does that mean for them regarding their place in the church and family, socially?

It's about time this was legally and socially recognized as the emotional and psychological child abuse that it is.
having read the exchanges between rev, bill bowen, and others involved in the silent lambs website, i honestly feel sickened.
i remember when i first started to hear rumblings that "something big" was going down regarding the society's handling of child abuse.
i was overjoyed because i had first-hand knowledge of several atrocities in this regard and was hoping against all odds that a major upset would force them to change their policies.
I remain loyal. And grateful for an outstanding job.
I embrace my work, which is to keep alive that exposure of evil which has finally been put onto the public stage.
To 'pass it on', in the hopes that our concerted efforts will rescue some almost future DUB from becoming yet another victim of the WTS.

It was the cold ruthlessness of Johnny Cochran.

i have often wondered if many people would be better off if they stayed witnesses.
some people i have known have really gone off the deep end after they left the watchtower.
most all of my family have left now (not due to me as i was cut off from them for years) and many others i know who have left are now bitter atheists or have become pagans and worship stones or new ageers playing with crystals.
All depends on what you mean by 'better off'.
But, if we're to believe the words of ALL the great religions, there is nothing to seek and no satisfaction to found in lies, deceit, cruelty or hatred.
the man who admitted he attempted to murder the priest whom he accused of molesting him 10 years earlier was acquited.
mind you, the priest was never convicted on any charges.
because one law is violated, it's ok to break another law?.
It's very JW to see things in black and white.
I'm grateful for the cautious and forgiving ambivilance of mitigating justice for this crime.
When people are deeply and profoundly injured by someone who has power over them, we can forgive them some of their psychic and emotional collapse.
I trust this judge and jury will come to a good determination.
May this be a warning to other abusers. It's not all just about dry little courtroom battles. When you 'play' on that level, you could get hurt.
May this NOT be an invitation to other victims. You know, this is not the 'norm' and if you tried to do this, you would most likely only find yourself in deeper trouble.
Still, we can empathize with this guy. And let it be known that we do.
