This is an astonishingly good thread.
One thing I would like to add to my list, in response to Gam's comments.
It was said that perhaps the numbers are so high because consentual activity between underage parties was included.
I have to mention that only in the WTS would it even come to mind to consider the possibility that they somehow confused the two. They innocently or manipulatively have subtely and repeatedly given the impression that they 'just don't really know' what is or isn't child molestation.
Reminds me of the kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. 'Oh, I didn't know....' or as the 'social worker' on the JW press release said back in the beginning of all this, ''Twenty years ago, we just didn't know that this was a bad thing.' (I'm paraphrasing) I don't think laws against incest first got on the books 20 years ago!
Are we really to believe this, given their very busy and very conniving Legal Department?
Or is it just another predictable response from a guilty party clinging to straws to save their a**?
One further point: There is a lot of sexual stuff in the old testament that would (happily) be considered criminal today.
There's good reason to suspect that JWs look at these ancient biblical stories from a 'Bible is better' and 'Bible is relevant' perspective. Can you think of any reason why they might not?
Except, of course, for that 'Ceaser's things to Ceaser' part. Which FORCES them to comply with the law.
In some jurisdictions, anyway.
When there is a law.
And when there is not a law, what do you suppose is the relevant guiding principle for JWs?
