I will teach them in much the same way I was taught about religion in RE (Religious Education) classes in the UK. I will tell them what different people believe, but I won't say 'this is definitely untrue' or 'this is definitely true'. That way, they will get a good overall view of many religious beliefs and if they choose one it will be after looking at a wide range first.

Self Deceit and Faith.
by hillary_step inthis thread is inspired by a comment made on another thread, but i thought it would make an interesting discussion.. self deceit is described as a "misconception that is favorable to the person who holds it".
my premise is that faith is a form of self-deceit - lying to oneself.. so, i would ask of the "faithful" the following questions and would request that they be read carefully to ensure no that there is no misunderstanding of purpose.. 1) in what way is faith not self-deception?.
2) is a person who has faith in a god that you do not believe in, say for example siva, practicing a form of self-deception?.

hey - way to generate hope lol
Diseases exist. It's a hard fact of life. We can either cry about it and do nothing, or learn what's involved in combatting disease and try to overcome it. We get more hope from the second option.
and btw i don't wanna live tomorrow so i certainly don't wanna live forever
tijkmo of the afraid to look class
Eternity in heaven or something then, I should have been more specific.
You don't seem too happy now so your hope may not be helping much. Learning more about the world around us can be exciting and give life meaning by itself (the first video on Growing Up In The Universe goes into that). You don't have to lie to yourself to be happy, and I'm not convinced it does make you happy. Maybe at one point it did, but if you'd rather not be alive now, maybe it's time to look at other options.

tijkmo,
What is your view of antibiotics?

If we didn't understand the process of evolution, we couldn't fight diseases in this way. We can live longer, healthier lives if we understand evolution. What good is false hope at the end of the day? You may be comforted in the here and now, but that won't mean you'll live forever. You just think you will. Why waste the only life we know for certain we have with wishful thinking and delusion? Why can't you be satisfied with this life? We get more years here than most animals do. You were lucky enough to be born in the first place. The universe doesn't owe you one, you owe the universe. You're not a child now, you're an adult.
You said there weren't facts, I've provided them. It's your choice if you don't want to look at them. You just have to understand that it's not because the facts aren't true, it's because you're afraid to look at them and see them for what they are.

I can't see how anyone can say Islam doesn't condone wife beating when there are verses that say it must be done. If the overall message is one of love and peace, why add those verses in? Why does it say to beat them?
"Oh it says that but it doesn't mean that!"
What? Read it! It says to beat them, are you blind? Is 'beat' a mistranslation of 'kiss'?
How can the overall message contradict that? Are there verses that say 'Oh yeah those beating verses, ignore them!'? No. Are there some more peaceful verses in the koran? Sure. Do they cancel out the bad ones? Not unless you decide in your own head that they should, in which case you're following your own morality and not that of the koran.
Sam Harris made a good point in a debate. He said "Imagine the koran had one more verse in it which said something like 'If a red haired woman walks on your lawn and it's a Friday, kill her'. Everything else in the book is the same, except that verse has been added. We'd be seeing red haired women being killed by Muslims, and apologists saying 'That's not true Islam! That's not the real message of Allah, the verse needs to be seen in context.' The problem isn't that those murdering didn't understand what the koran was saying, it's that they did. The moderates are on the wrong side of the theological argument."

He was making many predictions for the end of the world and failed .
As you have done too, Obves. Yet when your predictions failed to come true, you moved the date, you came up with another method to count up the numbers. You could never admit you were just wrong. You had just as much conviction in your failed predictions as you do with this new one. I feel sorry for you, and I can only hope you haven't fooled anyone into believing you. A false prophet is someone who makes predictions that do not come true, and this is exactly what you have done. The definition fits, yet you do not want to see it. You need to go to a psychologist and get deprogrammed and live life.
But because you want it to be true so much, everything I've said will go over your head. It won't sink in at all. You've been like this for years, and I don't see it changing.

i did find it interesting that the definition of theory being equal to facts is put forward by those who don't have facts to support their theories.
tijkmo, there are many facts to support evolution. I have compiled a list for you to look through.
Creationists will very often change what evolution means to make it seem implausible. You may have heard things like 'cats can't turn into dogs!' or 'humans don't come from monkeys!' Correct, and evolution doesn't teach that. Creationists like to pretend it does. It also says nothing about the big bang, how Earth formed or how life came from non life. Creationists like to pretend it does. For a straightforward easy to understand explanation of evolution, these video lectures are good-
http://richarddawkins.net/growingupintheuniverse
Here are fossils from the family line of humans. These show how we have changed over thousands of years. Don't rush this part, there are a lot of photos here if you have a look around the site.
http://www.msu.edu/~heslipst/contents/ANP440/
Here's another site on that: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/homs/specimen.html
Occasionally, evolutionary discoveries will make it to the news. Here are two examples:
Songbird shows how evolution works- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/1123973.stm
Researchers witness natural selection at work in dramatic comeback of male butterflies- http://www.physorg.com/news103469691.html
To keep up to date with the latest evolutionary news, check this page now and then-

If you have any questions then bring them to myself or other posters here should be able to help you out. The above really is the tip of the iceberg.

I've got it on now. Makes you think, if there WAS a Jesus 2000 years ago, it may have been pretty easy for him to convince a bunch of people he was the messiah. It's happening right now in the present day!
But, this guy, he sleeps with naked virgins and claims it's completely normal!
Ugh, this is sick...

The old 'theory' misconception- In scientific terms, a theory is an explanation of the facts. It doesn't have the same meaning as the word theory as used in day to day speech. So, we know gravity is real. Gravity is a fact. The theory explains how gravity works, and this can change when new data is available. It doesn't mean gravity isn't real though, just that we have a new understanding of it. Gravity will always be a fact, and so will evolution.
