the recently distributed tract "you are cordially invited to attend the 'deliverance at hand!
' dc of jws" invited people to mail in a coupon requesting the publication "what does the bible really teach?
the coupon had two check boxes:without obligation, i request a copy of the book what does the bible really teach?please contact me concerning a free home bible study.. given that the coupons would be mailed to local congregations with a covering letter from the branch requesting that the householder be visited with the book and the offer of a home bible study, was there really any difference between the two question?
A sublte, but powerful "top down" mentality exists in the WTS as it pretains to honesty. Dubs are at least subconsciously aware they are not being delt with in a intellecually honest manner, (ie can't read older publications, not allowed to consider opposing information, can't know how the GB actually makes decisons, etc). Things are carefully disguised with such terms as "appropriate", "arrangement", "order", etc. Rarely, are ideas expressed in a direct manner, especially when dealing with issues of control. What is indirectly taught, is that it is just fine to be "dishonest", so as long as it benefits the organization or your "spirituality" somehow.
Actions speak, (and teach), louder than words. Dubs have excuses for just about everything, from defending the beliefs of the org, to why they won't work for a living. Many are downright delusional. I had very close personal experience with one of this kind, (my ex). This type of behavior is the upshot of "top down" dishonesty, and it is RAMPANT in the WT.

a jw explains how their group can tell jesus returned 'invisibly' on another discussion board:you are right that you would probably need to be one of jehovah's witnesses to see all the things that we see.
jehovah's witnesses study the bible in ways that a lot of other people don't.
we dig into it, read it, understand and see meaning in scriptures that for a lot of people don't make much sense.. .
You are right that you would probably need to be one of Jehovah's Witnesses to see all the things that we see. Jehovah's Witnesses study the Bible in ways that a lot of other people don't. We dig into it, read it, understand and see meaning in scriptures that for a lot of people don't make much sense.
There isn't one scripture that convinces us that the sign of Jesus presence is here. There are many, and them taken together are convincing. But for me to convince you of that within a few words it would be difficult. You would need a deep understanding of the various scriptures of the Bible in order to really see what the Bible is talking about. True there have always been wars. Not on the scale that we have had since 1914.
As I said an a different thread, they are thier own worst enemy when they attempt to defend thier beliefs...

what is it with jehovah's witnesses and apostates and "big announcements" - they are as bad as each other.
witnesses are always on about big announcements in the pipeline - just to end up being disappointed.
like the time they reduced the pioneers hours - big wow.
After all, the desire for a bit of drama probably played a large part in how many of us were attracted to the Witnesses and their tales of doom and destruction in the first place. It gave even the most mudane world events deep "spiritual" significance and infused ordinary occurrences with meaning.Old habits die hard, but we now have to create our own worlds of meaning, and try to get away from the burning desire for the great eschatological denouement. Then we will truly live in interesting times - of our own making.
This is very true on a lot of levels, but probably more for those who came into the organization as adults. I know for myself, (being brought up in jwism), I hated all of the reactionary stuff every time some slight change in policy or practice took place. It always seemed to be about, "look, we must be REAL close now, just look how Jehovah is streamlining things!", and such. Nothing ever really changed. I would tend to think that most of us "apostates" fall into a similar camp as myself, and are just tired of all of that nonsense.

i posted awhile back, been "lurking" pretty much daily over the past months and from reading everyone's posts - i actually have gotten to know some of you... sort of... if you read my profile you will know i was a lifer, pretty much knee deep in the 'borg (picking up the slang.... i stopped cold turkey last fall - didn't go to memorial, special assembly day, district convention, circuit assembly... no field service in almost a year... these are all firsts... and i am 40 years old.... guess what, i have ignored phone calls, messages from the cong elders, everyone was panic'd for the first 3 months or so... then it all stopped... no calls... they have written me off i guess... of course it has helped that i moved 45 minutes south of my congo, back to my home town - where everyone in the congs around here know me... the rumor mill has told them something is up, but since i'm not df or da, they don't know how to act - so they just ignore me.... i just need to vent abit - feeling down lately because of the things i have learned - feeling betrayed by my parents for joining such a cult.
blaming jw's for ruining my sister's lives, blaming jw's for wasting my life... i want to go to a meeting and yell during the public talk about how foolish everyone is for belonging to this cult... .
it seems i have accepted the loss all of my conditional friends - hundreds of them in central indiana... i see them at the mall, at restaurants and they look right past me... kinda funny now, but it still hurts when my former friends - even the best man at my wedding - refuses to talk to me or even call to ask what is going on and why i stopped... i am invisible.
Welcome eyesopened!
Some of that story sounds very familiar.

i am a bit too young to remember this but, was disco really banned by the jw's??
?
Somehow I remember this from childhood. I seem to remember an Awake article "Disco-Is it for You?" Then I remember my mother and aunt talking about the magazine saying something about the beats being of some ancient Druid origin or something like that. Just more jdub nonsense.

lori and i are headed to nyc tomorrow, and we'll be there 'til thursday.
we'll also have limited funds (ie: don't suggest a broadway show!
any specific suggestions on good, inexpensive things to do, places to see, music, art, food?
Also, if your in midtown and like Italian, try il Vagabondo on 62nd and 2nd. Best there is.

***You Are 18% Evil***
You are good. So good, that you make evil people squirm.
Just remember, you may need to turn to the dark side to get what you want!
