"Pocket calculators were demonized in the early 70's. "You don't need them. You've got a much better calculator in your head" the magazines would say. They continued to spout this line even after the point where you couldn't get through even a high school level Trig or Calculus I class without one. I guess Witness kids weren't supposed to be taking those classes anyway. How much math does it take to wash a window?"
--TD
No kidding, huh?...Okay, it's the 9/8/76 Awake, starting on page 23. Simply amazing. I can't believe they had to rail against pocket calculators. I also notice it was in their tried-and-true "present a paragraph of positives vs. a section of negatives" style of article.

The Great Watchtower Porn Panic
by metatron insome years ago, when the 'voluntary donation' arrangement was announced, the society followed it up with a period of near panic.. they flooded the kingdom ministry, watchtower and circuit assemblies with pleas "reminding" the friends to open up their wallets.. eventually, they calmed down and accepted the situation, especially after coming up with new scams involving "deficits" at assemblies.
and appeals for property being willed to them.. .
it is with this background that i note a burst of emphasis about porn.

Things JW's say...
by Zico insince realising that this organisation doesn't have the truth, i've started to notice a lot of hypocritical statements from other jw's.
they criticise others for doing the same things they do, though they don't seem to realise it.
as i'm still a part of this organisation, it makes it very frustrating for me to hear these things, and not be able to shout out about their hypocrisy.

"Who here has been stabbed in the back and betrayed completely by a "brother" or "sister"?"
--Good Girl or Bad Girl?
I've had some of my possessions stolen twice from my house. One time I know it was jdub kids (not baptized yet, but raised around witnesses) because they confessed to it, and the other time I was pretty sure it was jdub kids too. -

Disgusting comment regarding the baptism at the DC
by under_believer inat the service meeting the other day the "friends" were given an opportunity to discuss the district convention (portland, or, june 30-july 2).
) people baptized at that convention.

"When I first came in in 84 the Society was telling people NOT to have KIDS "in this time of the end" and they were encouraging the sheep to pioneer and NOT go to college. The result is that they have less converts, stupid sheep with no good paying jobs and no money coming into the organization. So then the preaching work is starting to produce next to NO converts in the field and they are having to depend on the JW offspring to keep the numbers up at all. And the offspring once they are indoctrinated and TRAPPED are less likely to leave because they would lose their families."
--LovesDubs
They were saying that in the forties, too. I've seen plenty of life stories about pioneer couples who count "all the people we've brought into the truth as spiritual children." I wonder if, secretly, they weep for being counciled not to have kids because "the end was so near?" Yet now they are in their 60s and 70s. I wonder how many people have wept for what could've been. -

"I wonder if the "brothers" have a harder time with this. Since I was baptized at 18, it was probably beginning to look like I might skip out. In the congregation I was in when I was baptized, there was one particular brother who ALWAYS asked me to say prayer. AND I WASN'T BAPTIZED YET. I would get that little nervous look on my face and shake my head slightly. Then he would say, "Oh that's right. I forgot you're not baptized yet." If you went and visited friends out of state, they would ask you to say prayer at the meals. Do you know how embarrassed you feel when you say you can't 'cause you're not baptized yet? If you're old enough to grow facial hair, or drive for that matter, it is automatically assumed that you are already baptized.
In my case, embarrassment worked wonders. No wonder I hate the org with a passion these days."
--Jourles
Wow, that's dirt. Yeah, the pressure is always harder on the brothers. That always bugged me...since sisters didn't have any responsibilities, they weren't pressured as hard. Wouldn't it be fair to bug them just as much as the males got bugged? Apparently not. -

Do Not Be Misled. They're Not That Bright.
by metatron inonce upon a time, i can remember gb member gangas asking prepared questions at the lunch table - to show how smart he supposedly.
i can remember knorr not keeping track of critical needs supporting bible production - and boring all of us with his windy, cold hearted.
judgements at breakfast.

"the governing body may not be that bright..so it makes you wonder who is leading the wtbs now? they have some kind of business advisors, hence the many different "corporations".. they are downsizing.. they are selling some real estate and building more in high profile , high price areas of new york. there is someone smart there leading the money!"
--candidlynuts
Sure there is, it's the WTS's lawyers and accountants. How else can they rigidly define terms and play rhetorical hockey with obvious Biblical statements every Watchtower study? Why else would they be splitting up into a bunch of corporations, but to protect their assets and contain damage from a lawsuit? Make no mistake, there are brains behind the outfit. If there weren't, it would've fizzled out long ago... -

" "how many young people are choosing to dedicate their lives to Jehovah..." Yeah, right. "Choosing." As if they had much choice in the matter. I remember the comments about how old I was getting to be, and "oh, my goodness, still not baptized?" the dirty looks, the hints, the talks about how we wouldn't be under the parents' umbrella of protection if Armageddon came right now, better hurry and get in the protection program, lol."
--Virgochik
Sounds very familiar. I got dunked so they would stop bothering me. Little did I realize, the hinting, the bothering, the bugging, the suggesting, the persuasion, the nagging, and the lecturing never ends... -

"I personally have learned of one teen who has told others he would like to blow up the Kingdom Hall of his parents.
Since viewing his website I think he is serious and capable of it.
He claims he is calming down now and not a serious threat anymore."
--anewme
Thank God he didn't do it. That would've been a PR wet dream..."SEE! SATAN IS PERSECUTING US! PREACH HARDER, SHEEP!!"
I forget what our local needs was about. Wasn't paying attention. -

Sounds like the elders had a real effective "you youngins better get baptized right now" sweep. A couple friends of mine are around 19 and still unbaptized. It'll be interesting to see how long they can hold out.
