I wonder how many other brilliant minds didn't get put to use at the org. I guess that's good news, that the org is deprived of apt minds.

Andersinfo: Swingle - Sydlik - Fekel - Jackson
by TheOldHippie insince you've known quite a few of the gb members etc., and mentioned that when jaracz entered a room, sydlik would leave, i'd like to ask you about sydlik - what was your impression of him?
it seems he was sort of a reformist without enough power, but i've also read that some say he had a less glamorous role at the 1980 events?.
and then swingle, of whom i've heard nothing but nice things - your impression?.

AGAIN with the college bashing
by Pistoff inok so the mate took good notes at the ca and here is the newest on "higher education:.
the usual bashing of motives: those who want great wealth, prestige and seek it in a college educationcollege graduates don't always get jobs in their fieldsdrugs, drinking and sex are "rampant" at collegesthose who want to "snatch us away" are near if we go to college (isa 54)if we seek a college education, we are not spiritual mindedthe most disturbing for me was this:.
those who choose college will not get blessings from jehovahand of course there was the obligatory interview with the college graduate who disdains the education whe received.. .

Great comments, all.
I think it's highly amusing to see themselves shoot others in the foot.
Recently there was a young brother visiting the hall. Apparently his parents have bribed him into not going to the local State uni by paying for his apartment, urging him to go to a community college instead.
This anti-college policy is madness. I wonder if it will get so bad that they will begin the Inquisition for anyone who has a degree...

Watchtower is kicking people out again, in the name of LOVE?
by Bethelite Elder inright now at bethel, they are laying off and reassigning again.
if you have cancer or some other illness, you are a liability and it's time to pack.
i remember the night when we had the special talk about there being a great need in the field and some would be sent out.

I'm quite sorry to hear about another round of Bethel layoffs. Welcome to JWD, Cessa and Bethelite Elder.
It does seem to make sense...I haven't been hearing a lot about making Bethel a career anymore.

Question about "marking" in the congregation
by Olin Moyles Ghost incan one of the resident scholars settle a disagreement about the current jw practice of "marking"?.
my understanding is that marking works this way: suppose annie is a jw who persists in an activity that is strongly frowned upon by the society--but is not a df-ing offense (for example, she is dating a non-witness), then annie gets counseled by the elders.
if annie continues to date the unbeliever, then the elders may decide to "mark" her.

Passwordprotected, that's a very sad story which highlights the legalism getting in the way of what should have been an enjoyable event for everyone. I think everyone who considers joining should read stories like yours.

Ok - just to clarify (for me please, lol) - the way I understand it now is that 1914 is no different from any other year...?
--MidwichCuckoo
1914 is still being touted as when Jesus came back. It's taken a backseat to increased emphasis on adoration of the Slave TM , but it's not gone away.

Circuit Overseers are under pressure to produce - My experience
by BonaFide inso we have all seen the yearbook or the wt with the yearly statistics.. when i became a c.o., at my first meeting with the other c.o.
's at the branch, i was handed a piece of paper with statistics on it for that past year, both of the circuit i was assigned to serve, and the total stats in the country.. here are the stats that the branch keeps track of:.
publishers, congregations, bible studies, baptized, memorial attendance, pioneers, aux pios, etc.

Not surprising. Spirituality by the numbers. When they told me Jesus purchased my meeting seat, I was a bit disturbed. But this is the logical conclusion of a lawyer's take on Christianity.

End of Civil War in Sri Lanka
by insearchoftruth insince so much of the 'gloom/end times' talk is based on all the wars, increase in earthquake activity.....how does a jw respond when things like the 25 year civil war in sri lanka end??
does it just get ignored?.

SirNose586
I doubt they could even find Sri Lanka on a map...
But yeah, I heard that the Tamil Tiger rebels were finally defeated. Sounds like a baseball team...

10 Years Japan losses 5,400 Publishers and 638 Kingdom Halls! Why?
by Witness 007 injapan had a handful of witnesses after ww 2....this number skyrocketed to 222,912 by 1998!
then something happened.
publisher figures didn't stop, they dropped by thousands over the next decade!.

"Don't forget to factor in that the Japanese encourage EDUCATION to their young ones.
Every good JW knows that education helps a young JW to abandon "the truth." "--OTWO
I think Jerry brings up a good point. In a culture that has so much pressure to succeed and make money, it's becoming increasingly difficult to sell that anti-college message. Also we must remember that Japan is a very secular nation; even Christian missionaries are having a tough time there. It's not easy to say "We're better than this type of Christianity" when there isn't a suitable comparison.

HOW THE ORGANIZATION HAS LASTED THIS LONG...
by Mary inthis is in response to a post i did on another thread about the borg not having as much swagger as they used to.
it was suggested that i post it under a new topic so here it is.
it's a brief summary of the decades and how they've managed to get away with claiming that 'the end' is nigh for over 130 years now.
-
SirNose586
Spot on, Mary.
I would also like to add that by the 90's, you've got this generational base to give a feeling of stability for the born-ins. Sure, there's nothing remarkable coming out of Brooklyn. But there's also nothing which rocks the boat. The young party and have a good time (up to a point) like anyone else, but they can still show up to meetings. Even if they have no real zeal, it's not a problem to remain a JW. Most of the battles have already been fought for them.
