As a 'mature' student on low income it was bloody hard, but worth it. I just finished at Uni last month and have a much better paid job lined up already. It wasn't just that though, it was the feeling of achievement that made it special, after succesfully completing a four year degree.

my brother-in-law is graduating today, and i just wanted to tell you guys how proud i am of him.
he's overcome learning disabilities to be one of the top in his class.
he was on the honor roll the entire year, and he stood up for himself when it came time to decide between the whims of his parents and his personal honor.. he dealt with emotional and physical abuse from his parents.

they most likely are referring to the so called knowledge of there "truth" as if the knowledge binds you forever to their rules.
Yup. I think what they mean is that once you know the 'truth' tm you will always know it.
Sort of like knowing the world is a sphere. No matter how much that you then protest that it's flat you still KNOW it's round. So, to a JW, no matter what you say about their false prophecies, misinterpretation of scripture, bad advice, harmful policies and downright kookiness they will just look at you with sad eyes and say to themselves 'ah, but you know it's the Truth'
To them there is no honourable way out - you are either too weak or too wicked to submit to divine rulership.
There is no such thing as a genuine grievance against the Society, and to even suggest such an idea is tantamount to sticking your finger up to God Himself.
How's that for arrogance? Not allowing ANYONE to question the GB because you are questioning God himself! And how could any mere human question God?

i was df'd a number of years ago.
my parents never shunned me - they didn't feel that df'ing broke the family ties.
but when my brothers or uncle were in town i was "allowed" to come visit at certain times when their other jw friends would not be around.

Trouble is the religion doesn't rely on it's physical assets to survive.
The one thing they do build well is a sense of unity among the brothers. They are experts at mind-control, manipulation and micro-management of their people.

simply because you are no longer jehovahs witnesses does that mean that you flaunt all moral authority and engaged in any perverted pleasure that you have a mind to?
because your morality is no longer legislated by a pseudo religious organization does that give you license to engage in all acts of "immorality" and refer to it "as just having fun.

Had a quick look at the boobies thread...how anyone can be offended by that stuff is beyond me when there is so much REAL immorality in the world.
BUT, I do understand Dutchies point. We have to be aware that it MIGHT put off sincere seekers of truth (whatever that is) about the troof. Unfortunately she linked posting that sort of thing to low morals -WHICH WAS OFFENSIVE to those of DIFFERENT opinion. However I praise her for having the courage to both raise the issue and continue to respond even though she was upset.
I think Dutchie raised some valid points, worthy of reasoned debate. I wish people could learn to have differences of opinion here without getting nasty and sarcastic (I know, it happens to the everyone). We don't HAVE to have a fight to the death over every minor point or take it so personally.
Seeing posters you respect rip you to pieces is a bit like having a knife thrust into your heart, so...

Anyway, I think Simon made the right call in this instance. I don't think the thread crossed the line but it went right up to it and there was potential for it to go beyond.
Personally, on a final note, I think there tends to be too much talk about people's rights and not enough talk about their responsibilities.
