I have family in the area, but I couldn't ask them about it, they would wonder how I heard about it and our relationship is strained anyway due to me being out.

It's not the truth. Please investigate this religion before you go any further, it's not at all what it claims to be. I don't know how much record keeping they do, but I believe they do keep track of bible studies.
Why you should NOT be a JW
They hide child sex abuse
You can be disfellowshipped for just about anything three elders agree upon, your JW friends and family will be forbidden to talk to you, there is no recourse, you will not be allowed to give your version of events. You can be disfellowshipped for celebrating Christmas, voting, serving in the armed forces, attending another church, heavy petting, getting a blood transfusion, celebrating your birthday or saying you do not agree with anything the Governing Body teaches.
They flip flop on doctrine constantly, with little justification.
They lie about their past and their history of failed date predictions.
Their predictions about dates and end times is based on the fall of Jerusalem, the date they use has no basis in fact, the vast majority of bible scholars agree on a different date.
They engage in deceptive quotes, picking parts of sentences to bolster their point of view, obscuring the original meaning.
I could go on, but you get the point. Run!

I knew a man who disfellowshipped his son.
by andrekish ini knew a man who wouldn't talk to his own son.
i am neither the man nor the son.
the son is a very disillusioned friend.. i have to be careful with how this is said in order not to blame any innocent group by mistake.

Sadly, this kind of things happen in a religion like this. While there are many good people in the religion, they have their fair share of hypocrites. They don't have a paid clergy, so elders are usually not very well prepared to do any kind of counseling, and sometimes use their position to prey on innocent children, as this creep did.
It's a cult. The Organization has been paying off victims for years while berating the Catholic church over its child abuse issues. Fortunately there have been several lawsuits lately where victims would not settle and sign non disclosure agreements, so the cat is out of the bag.
Your friend would do well to stay away from anything to sso with his father or the religion.

Thank you LisaRose for such a well thought out post.
You seem to have an intuitive grasp for how to talk to people so that they can "hear" you.
I too, have thought about leaving this forum because of the abrupt, churlish sound of some posts but I am already "leaving" one place (the Org) and dont want to just keep leaving things. I want to start adding things instead. So I stay and just find myself wincing inside at certain posts.
I dont see that atheism and patience need to be opposites of one another and thank you for demonstrating that both sides can be presented.
You have a new fan and I eagerly look forward to reading your future posts now that I have seen that you are a person of insight.
Thank you so much again for the kindness in your words.Wow, thanks for your kind comments. Don't let the atheists/believer debates keep you away from JWN. As heated as they seem sometimes, it's really mostly good people who just enjoy a good debate, and have little patience for fools. They could be a bit more tactful, but then some of the believers can be obnoxious too. I have learned a lot from those debates, so I do think it serves a purpose. Take it with a grain of salt, or stay away from those threads if it bothers you, but don't leave, I think JWN is stronger if we have a variety of viewpoints. We all have a story to tell.

Lets pretend jw's disappeared
by atheist_R_stupid inand joined your ranks.... this means...youre talking about a people, that currently are pushing no sex till marriage.
that would end and join into the messages you currently push regarding youths and sex.
that would be sex, with condoms.

Yeah we need people like him to shake things up once in a while. How else are we to show how silly the Watchtower arguments are? He is making us look like good, comparatively.
It gets old fast though. It would be fine if he actually discussed something, but he seems to want to just dazzle us with his brilliance then not read or respond to anyone else. I hope he tires of us and moves on quickly.

Just ask simple questions and make street witnesses move along
by OnTheWayOut inyou don't have to know much to talk to jw's and show them they don't want to really discuss the matters.they consider a discussion on the matter they are pushing to be "confrontational.".

Welcome, interesting story. Too bad you didn't have a camera when you ran into the tranny brother, lol. Really though, who cares? He's not hurting anyone but himself, trying to be something he is not. We were all forced to do things we didn't want to do because we thought it was required. Maybe he would be open to your information on 607, and he's hardly going to rat you out to the elders, is he? You would be doing him a favor, then he could be free to wear fishnets every day, lol. I live in the San Francisco bay area, that wouldn't raise an eyebrow here.
I divorced my disfellowshipped husband because he was irresponsible with money, I was getting older and realised we would die broke because he made poor decisions. The straw that broke the camels back was that he borrowed 8k on a credit card to get out of a lease on a one year old car to lease the exact same car only one year newer. And he didn't even tell me about it, I found out by accident. I sold some stock I owned to pay off bills due to him being on disability, so it was galling that being debt free meant nothing to him. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself. I had to give him half my 4OIK, but it was worth it.

Informative and interesting website recommendations please.
by nicolaou ini've got into a bit of a rut visiting the same half dozen or so sites most of the time.
i'd love to hear your suggestions for good sites featuring popular science (esp' astronomy and evolutionary biology), natural history, poetry and english literature.
and anything fun and surprising you might like to spring on me would be welcome too!

I have a kindle and get The Washington Post, their articles seem very well researched and much more informative that the usual internet news sources. -

Dear typer-ers, you're doing it wrong!
by Simon inthere are many things wrong with the world, many injustices and crimes committed.
what if we could stop one of them?
wouldn't it make the world a slightly better place?

I knew only one space after a sentence was standard now, but I thought two spaces were still acceptable. It's really hard to change at my age, but I will try.
