The Confederate Flag

the latest controversy over the confederate flag just sums up to me the state of dysfunction that exists in american society.. in summary: a white supremacist nutter shoots 9 black people dead in a church.

he's clearly inspired by the messages of others which the confederate flag is often a symbol of.. it seems like a no-brainer to remove it.

not only isn't it removed, it isn't even lowered at all as a mark of respect.. and of course now there are the people who want to defend their right to have it.

This is not an example where "nothing was done". The case was presented to grand jury, they chose not to bring charges. Are you saying the grand jury made the decision it did because the cop was black? If so, provide proof. Or are you saying the cop should have been prosecuted, despite no indictment, because he was black and the person he killed in the line of duty was white? Just as in Fergusen, the person doing his job was exonerated by a grand jury. What more do you think should have/could have been done?

People seem to forget Blacks are also racist. If you’re going to call white people racist, then call it for what it is. We now live in a racist society

SOME blacks are racist, just as SOME white people are racist. Racism is bad whatever the reason. What is your point? While racism does exist, I don't believe we live in a racist society. You seem to see everything in the extreme, as if there are only two options, a paradise of racial harmony or or a society of extreme racism.

All rational is gone.

Blacks are just as guilty as whites.

Of what? In what context? You talk of Angela Davis and the Black Panthers, what is your point, exactly? That black racism and extremism exist? Yes, of course they do, but they don't speak for the majority of black people.

The confederate Flag is not the issue or shouldn’t be, if you want to fix something that’s broke like racism, look both ways and admit to the corruption and failure of society that made it so.

But it is the issue. What if your state adopted the flag of the black Panthers and flew it in your state capitol? No matter what explanation was given ( it's a symbol of black pride, it has historical significance! ) you would feel insulted and excluded, and rightly so. You talk of corruption, what is more corrupt that state sponsored racism? Because flying a flag that is a symbol of racism is, in fact, racist.

when you were still asleep in the watchtower organization and had no idea of ttatt.

what would you have done if you were in a serious accident and all of a sudden you woke up in the emergency hospital room with all the brothers and sisters at your side and your spouse cheering you on to be faithful to jehovah.

then the doctor comes up to you and tells you that you are about to go into surgery because there is no time to lose and the only way to live is to take a blood transfusion ?

I wasn't strong in the religion, but I still would have died rather than take blood. Even stranger, my ex husband would not take a blood transfusion when he had internal bleeding and almost died, even though he had been disfellowshipped for twenty-five years at the time. His hemoglobin was down to three which is basically not compatible with life. I was still a JW then and even I thought he was being stupid.

Tsarnaev guilty - should he get death or not?

i think he probably will (it is the us after all) but i hope he doesn't.

he caused incredible pain and suffering to men, women and children who had never done anything to him.

many died in unimaginable agony, others are disabled for life.

I would not vote for the death penalty in this case. For one thing it costs more to execute someone than to imprison them for life due to the appeals process. Also, killing him will make him a martyr in the eyes of many.

While what he did was horrific and unforgivable, but I do think he was influenced by his brother and due to his age might not have understood the complete, full ramifications of what he did, plus he was a member of an extreme religion, and we all know how religion can warp your values. His apology does not ring true to me, but I feel spending the rest of his life in prison will give him time to reflect on the path he chosen and maybe come to feel true repentance. He can think about the lives he took, about the life he might have had and the wife and children he will never have.

Why JW marriage is a huge problem for the organization.

the difficulty of finding a marriage mate is well known for sisters.

but i would say it's hard for brothers also.

But at the same time he won't date/marry a non JW for fear of disfellowship.

It's not a disfellowshiping offence, unless they have changed recently. Maybe he just doesn't want to commit and is using this as an excuse.

There are certain policies that cannot be changed. Some can be changed through a court of law, and some cannot be changed. The notion that the JW elders have to announce and/or inform the congregation that a pedophile is in their midst does not have legal clout. It won't happen.

I agree, it's my understanding that part of the lawsuit (that elders did not inform the congregation that Kendrick was a pedophile) was overturned, so it wasn't even on the table at this point.

They settled over the fact that elders assigned her to work in field service knowing Kendrick was a pedophile. It's possible the Watchtower changed that policy, which is a good thing and should have been policy from the beginning.

Whatever happened, this was a win for Candace and anyone else who has been impacted by the Watchtower's disgusting practices. The Watchtower has been settling cases for years and keeping it hushed up, which enabled them to a claim they didn't have a pedophile problem. It will be much harder to do so in the future.

The death toll from this game is escalating, but we have a DOJ that prefers to keep it out of the news media,

What do you have to prove that? You show one video, which proves what? That some people claim to have done this? So what? Do you have names, dates, statistics that prove this is anything more than a media over reaction that has since been debunked?

Third, while I agree with the majority on racism, the confederate flag has no special meaning other than those who cherish or distort its past

Whatever it's origins, this flag has been adopted by many racist organizations and people, and so has come to symbolize racial intolerance and hate and is offensive to a great many people. While some may chose to use it and they may have that right, there is no reason for any government to use it in any way.

It's just a shame that it took a horrific act to accomplish this.

If it's doing no harm, then it's doing no harm.

But it is doing harm. Imagine a person of color visiting a government building and seeing a symbol of the people who wish to oppress them. Why would that be OK for anyone? The swastika was adopted by the Natzis, so should we be OK with it being used today, just because it originally had a more benign use? Imagine a Jewish person seeing a swastika adorning a government building and tell me that would cause no harm.

Jehovah's Witness woman refuses blood, then dies.

another jehovah's witness woman has died while giving birth due to massive blood loss and refusing a blood transfusion.

she leaves nine children behind.

she finally consented to the transfusion but it was too late to save her.

Why are you judging this poor woman? It's really none of anybody's business why she is pregnant, maybe her husband raped her, and being a JW she didn't feel she have the right to say no. sSe is a victim.

Demons

this isn't a joke and i don't post here often but i had a conversation with my grandma i found comical and thought i'd share.

my uncle lives far away and my grandma wants to go visit him but says she is afraid of the demons in his rental home.

she is afraid a demon might follow her home.

It used to be a fairly common JW delusion, although you don't hear so much about it anymore. To be fair the bible does speak of spirits inhabiting things or people, which just goes to show how backwards the bible is.

When my daughter was young, back in the eighties, there was a JW legend that Smurf toys were demonized, supposedly one got up and walked out of a kingdom hall. My in laws told this nonsense to my daughter, she freaked out and we had to throw her doll away.

Maybe your uncle has mental issues, or at least memory issues, and that might seem a rational explanation to him. Perhaps he should see a doctor.
