The Paranormal
by Peony ini'm interested to know if anyone has been to see a medium/clairvoyant since leaving jw's.
i must admit now i can make my own choices i seem to have a fascination with it although haven't acted on it as a) am i just jumping into believing another load of rubbish?
and b) what if it really is the demons pretending to be loved ones!!

I did a tarot card reading just out of curiosity. She did get some things right, but it was nothing I would consider proof of anything supernatural. I think some people are just good at reading reactions and are very intuitive. I certainly would not plan my life around anything they say, but if it's just for fun, why not? -

Historical Meanings of Sheol & Hades
by Perry infor those of you interested in getting to the bottom of the watchtower's teaching on sheol, hades, condition of the dead etc.
; this information is about as good as it gets.
the idea of consciousness after death was widely accepted from israel's earliest times, contrary to what the watchtower would have its members believe.. the lexicographical evidence is so clear that the great princeton scholar, b. b. warfield; stated that with modern hebrew scholars, there is no hesitation to allow with all heartiness that israel from the beginning of its recorded history cherished the most settled conviction of the persistence of the soul in life after death.

This is one area where the JWs actually made sense to me. I cannot reconcile a God of love torturing someone for eternity because they picked the wrong religion. I don't care what the bible says about it one way or the other, it doesn't make sense.
If a parent deliberately burns their child as punishment they considered criminals and are locked up, why is God given a pass for something a thousand times worse? It would be cruel and vindictive, especially when you consider that there are thousands of religions and your place of birth dictates which one you get to belong to. If God would do that he is not a loving heavenly father but a monster

I don't hate this woman, I totally get why she is doing what she is doing because as a JW I believed homosexuality was a sin, but I think she is very wrong to make this about her religion. It's not her job to decide who gets to be married, that is defined by law, she was elected to do her duties in accordance with the law, she is failing in her duties. If, for religious reasons, she didn't believe in divorce and remarriage (obviously not a problem for her, but some religious people do believe that) she would not be allowed to deny divorced people a marriage license, it's just as wrong to deny a marriage license to two gay people. Her choice is to carry out her duties, as defined by the law, or resign from her position. She is completely wrong to do neither.
I believe they will seek financial sanctions against her, at which point I hope she will resign her position or change her stance. As a last resort they could send her to jail, but I think they will try to avoid that, and I hope she sees reason.

I saw the picture, it made me cry. I wonder what individuals can do to help ease this suffering? Is the red cross doing anything? It seems crazy that more isn't being done except to shut borders and trains, when these people wouldn't be coming if they had any options. -

It's cult mind control at work. She believes that what the Watchtower teaches is the truth, so seeing something that is in conflict with that will arrouse cognitive dissonance. CG is an uncomfortable state, so she has to resolve that, the only way to resolve that is to fall back to the idea that "The Watchtower is the the truth", so your argument must be false, end of story. You will probably never get anywhere by challenging her like that, you are attempting to unwind years of conditioning, you are just causing her to put up her defences. Direct confrontation like that almost never works, in my opinion.
In my experience people break free of this in a couple of ways. One way is that something happens to them that is so extremely painful they are forced to confront the notion that the Watchtower is not the truth. Mistreatment by the elders or a fellow JW or other difficult situations can cause that.
The other is if the person learns critical thinking skills and starts seeing the logical fallacies on their own.
I have seen a few experiences where someone helped a loved one out of the organization, but it was extremely difficult and required a lot of patience. If you want to save your marriage and get your wife out, you need to back off for now. Work on strengthening your marriage for now. Rebuilt that trust and look for ways to get her to learn to think.

JW's aren't the only ones telling crazy stories

Yeah, many religions have modern urban legends, sometimes they are even the same stories with details switched around a bit. The thief under the bed story is told at churches, also the story about the killer who didn't kill a woman who came to his door because he saw two burly men standing on either side of her. -

Excellent advice. Looking back I can see where I learned some bad patterns from my years as a JW, even after I left it took me a while to learn to question things, to not do as I'm told, and to keep learning and asking questions. It does take time to get right of mind control, but I wish I had pushed harder at it. -

My parents sent the elders after me
by atacrossroads ini stopped regulary attending meetings and going in field service in january.
the elders have left me alone for the most part i think because of my jw husband.
last week my parents came over and told me i needed to come back to meetings.

Wow, it's crazy that your parents tried to plan physically force you to go to the meetings, that is really over the top. You are an adult, married woman, not a child. From now on just say that your parents and those elders have stumbled you by their unloving behavior. That puts the ball in their court, it's something they use to prevent people from doing normal things that are allowed per the bible, as in " if you did that, some people might get stumbled". Turn everything back to them and their atrocious behavior.

I almost gave up today except for a girl her tried to throw herself infront of two cars.............
by umbertoecho inthis may sound insane but i literally have blood on my hands as i have just come home from a counselling session that went wrong...i wanted to collate all that has happened and record it...hospital policy is against it.
i said "what am i alive for then if not to tell the truth" she tut tutted and i walked out sadly in despair.. when i got to the ground floor there was a young girl screaming her head off.
she was afraid, that is all she was...........afraid.

Wow, that is amazing. I guess you never really know what you can do until you are in a situation like that. You were very brave.
