Matt.27: 51-54 Do you remember WT saying these were bodies tossed about?
by whyizit ini swear that my jw friend told me that matt.
27:51-54 wasn't really speaking of a resurrection, but that the bodies were tossed out of the graves by the quake and only "appeared" to be alive, ....etc.....( they were tumbling around and looked like they were walking, but they were really just dead bodies that fell out of their graves and were moving around because of the quake.).
have any of you heard this before, and could you give me a clearer explanation of how this was explained?

Yes, I remember this well. This is one of the subjects on which the WTS quotes spiritist Johannes Greber for support. If no one gets to it before I get home tonight, I'll post the quote from the WT pubs.

What fantastic interpretation did the Society conjure up for this text?
I remember reading this when the "Daniel's Prophecy" book first came out. All I could do is shake my head. This is on page 264.
13 In Daniel’s time Kittim was Cyprus. Early in the first world war, Cyprus was annexed by Britain. Moreover, according to The Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible, the name Kittim "is extended to include the W[est] in general, but esp[ecially] the seafaring W[est]." The New International Version renders the expression "ships of Kittim" as "ships of the western coastlands." During the first world war, the ships of Kittim proved to be mainly the ships of Britain, lying off the western coast of Europe.
"Proved to be" ??? You gotta be kidding!

About Tattoos...
by Mastodon insomebody was asking me about tattoos and what the biblical rules about them are.
i also remember that a magazine (an awake!?
) mentioned that getting a tattoo is a matter of conscience.
-
DocBob
Significantly, the Mosaic Law forbade God’s people to tattoo themselves. Said Leviticus 19:28: “You must not make cuts in your flesh for a deceased soul, and you must not put tattoo marking upon yourselves. I am Jehovah.”
Funny how they quote than one and skip over the previous verse: (Leviticus 19:27) "‘YOU must not cut YOUR sidelocks short around, and you must not destroy the extremity of your beard."

Calling all BETHELITES
by YoursChelbie inif you have previously served at bethel, can you post word for word the "vow of poverty" that you are asked to take?
is this a written document that you keep?
has the wording of it changed a lot or always the same?
-
DocBob
What-a-Coincidence, thank you for posting that. I knew about the poverty part of the vow, but I notice that the word obedience comes even before poverty here. Amazing, but not surprising.

g94 11/8 p. 32 "What a Plethora of Knowledge!" ***"What
a Plethora of Knowledge!""PLETHORA," a word of ancient Latin and Greek origin, means "a superabundance, an excess." A reader of the Watchtower and Awake! magazines in Sierra Leone, West Africa, wrote the above words regarding the yearly bound volumes of these magazines that are produced by the Watchtower Society. He continued: "What wonderful gems of priceless wisdom! There is hardly a subject that interests me that I do not find discussed somewhere in the pages of one of these volumes. Many times people honestly mistake me for a college graduate, and when I confess that I have never darkened the doors of a college, they are surprised. But I say: ‘No, I am only an avid reader of the Watchtower and Awake! journals.’"

*** w83 6/15 p. 31 An Excellent Education ***
Would you like to grow in knowledge, obtaining an education of even much greater value than can be received in any college? You can do so by reading regularly this magazine and its companion, Awake! Not only will these journals help you to keep up with world events but they will also help you to see how these events fulfill the Bible prophecies regarding the time of the end of this entire system of things. Yes, regularly reading these publications not only will improve your knowledge of secular matters but will also provide you with knowledge that will put you in line to live forever in God’s righteous new system.—John 17:3; 2 Peter 3:13.

Here is an interesting quot It was 1987 There was Ollie North in front of congress and God getting the third degree, but what he said was stunning!
"Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?"
"His name is Osama bin Laden, sir" Ollie replied.
Sorry, but this is an urban legend - see http://www.snopes.com/rumors/north.asp -

by belbab induring the several years of my following the posts on this board, there have been quite a few posts that expressed wonder and curiosity, about how the leaders of the watchtower organization benefit personally from the financial affairs of this organization.

Belbab, thank you for posting the letter from Gordon Pollock. The Mr. and Mrs. Carl R. Howell to whom the letter is addressed are the parents of Joan Cetnar. In a phone conversation with Joan a few months ago she confirmed that the letter is authentic.
